Home.
Jean no longer knew if she deserved to call the school home. She had been gone for so long, and trusted the rest of the X-Men to keep the fires burning. Then again, she never thought she would be walking down that familiar driveway once more. Memories of the best years of her life were everywhere she looked. That baseball game on the lawn and the subsequent argument about Bobby cheating. That night she and Ororo walked along the fence and talked about Logan. The first time Charles brought her down this very driveway and into a life she never dreamed of. A life filled with her teammates. Saving the world with her friends. Surrounded by so many people she loved.
They were gone. She was alone. It was up to her now. Even if the whole world was different.
The budding friendship with Wanda was proof of that. Jean still remembered Magento as the man that killed her. Well, one of the times she died at any rate. Asking his daughter to do that very thing was some strange poetic tragedy that they never covered in Psychology class. Probably because any story of a person that died more than once was reserved for the Theology department. Despite the hesitation she has felt, Jean was glad to have found a friend in Wanda. Even more so, she was thankful that Wanda agreed to join her. One day, she'd repay her kindness. It's the least she could do for a friend. The nightmares of trying to destroy that very friend were still able to be ignored for the time being.
For the time being.
The Phoenix's pull on Jean was strongest here, which is why Jean had been avoiding the school. It made sense for Wanda to accompany her, as she was the one that the Phoenix was so unfathomably afraid of. If it helped keep Jean and the Phoenix separate, Jean was for it. It had been so long since she had her mind to herself. If she could hold on a bit longer, maybe it wouldn't happen. Maybe she could be her own woman once again. But she could feel the energy of the mutants inside the school. She needed to tend to them. Protect them. Make them grow. Teach them. Bring more and more back home.
Home. We are home.
