The thing from below was pleased to see the witch upset, and pleased to see them bicker. But it was not entirely a foolish thing, either. Edward was too eager to prove his point and extemporize on his own motives, but, luckily for him, the thing was willing to believe that he was trying to talk down Zatanna, not convince the god as such. It was interested more in the fervor than the purpose behind it, and in the promise of other avenues (computers, those would be new) to infect. The self-interest would be helpful, and the passion. Both good traits for martyrs.
It saw no reason to question the matter more deeply. What did it gain by remaining here, with this sad and unwilling shell? "This should be a simple thing, then," he murmured. "A bond of blood will seal things neatly." It placed one of Louis' blunt, soft fingernails against his palm, as if it would draw blood without trouble. But it paused, staring at him, gold discs fixed forward. "Unless you are squeamish." Was that a joke?
