Re: coffee: sam & neil
"Do you make a lot of public appearances?" she asked, brow quirked and entertainment on her youthful features. "You hate talking. Do you seriously have to go make nice with people in public now?" She had a hard time picturing it, but maybe it fit with the man who sat across from her, yeah? The ways he'd changed. "So, does that mean you get even more embarrassed at bad behavior in public, baby?" She grinned when she asked, because getting him tossed out of places was kind of a thing. "Six is still a long time. I was gone one, and that felt like a long fucking time. It's funny, yeah? I thought a year was enough to get it all together, but now that I'm back in it, I'm not so sure." Pause and related. "How's the bottle?"
As for the epilepsy thing? "No, you're my test audience. Let's not tell Lou, ok? He'd lose it, and he'd fucking worry all the time, and it's not like there's anything he can do about it. I have three fucking doctors and a collection of little orange bottles. Lou can't do anything to make it better." As for not looking, it had been kind of cowardly; she knew that. "Would you look? If it was you and right now you got shoved a year back here?"
"Lou will get out, and he'll be a pain in all our asses," she assured him, that same belief in her voice. She had to believe it; he was the only member of her fucking family that was left. She tried not to feel alone, but it didn't work as well as she pretended it did.
The mild protest about the sex thing made her roll her eyes. "Yeah, I know. I don't think we talked about fucking the entire time we were together. I get it, but sometimes it's good to talk about shit like that," she said. "I can use my therapist voice. I have like three of those too," she said with a grin, because she'd been in enough nuthouses in the past three years that it didn't make any sense to pretend like she hadn't.
She watched him doodle, and she expected some big confession; she got three words. "Baby, I need more than that. Doodle more ferociously if you need to, yeah?" She sipped her coffee and, ok, so maybe her almost-smile said she was enjoying making him squirm.
