"Of course," he said, with a small smile. If Casey wasn't grateful to be home, of course he'd get a good kicking. There was no sense in him letting guilt spoil his good fortune, so he had best not be letting it.
The pub sounded like a perfect fit for her, and he nodded. "Good. The hotel did something right, for a change." And wasn't that a revelation. When he finally got out of this place, he'd be lucky if there was still a job waiting for him. He'd already given his next move a great deal of thought, but there were no definitive plans. Not yet.
Ash's question was innocently posed but more complex than he could properly answer. His smile turned slightly more ashen, more wan. "It's complicated. But I think so. I have high hopes," he said. "I don't know how much longer it can possibly take, but I hope not long. I want to get back to...my life, such as it is, and living it." He paused, then his smile broke, widened a little again. A change of subject. "How is Matthew? Does he have a new school?"
