Who: Commissioner Jim Gordon, members of the GCPD graveyard shift (NPCs)
When: Very early Sunday morning
Where: GCPD HQ (St. Andrew's Circle, Downtown Gotham)
What: Jim makes good on a lost bet.
Rated: PG
It was hot, ungodly hot, and all Jim Gordon could hear was his own breath whistling in his ears. His vision was all but gone, the same for his movement. His legs felt like lead. Somewhere beyond the heat and the growing dizziness, Jim could hear the laughter.
"Oh this is too good, hang on hang on—"
"No pictures, Montoya, that's an order," Jim barked, his voice ringing around his own head. From somewhere beyond his long-lost peripheral vision, a camera flashed and another laugh pealed.
Jim grunted as he hoisted the clumsy, heavy canine head from his shoulders and sighed as the change in temperature caused his glasses to fog up. Around him, several detectives and a group of officers were nearly injured from hearty laughter. "God, it has been too long since we've done Davey."
The detective, Mitchell, was right. For almost two years, the GCPD had been losing too many cops, running too many raids to spare a single officer for community outreach. Too many cops, the good ones and the bad ones, hadn't even been on the force long enough to see much loved, much maligned costume of Davey the Drug-Sniffing Dog. The worn, caramel fur, the scuffed plastic eyes, the hula-hoop body frame dressed in a navy blue police shirt and no pants. At one time the costume had possessed a floppy red tongue. Whoever decided its removal would led Davey any dignity was, effectively, pissing on a wildfire.
"Lookin' good, Commissioner."
Jim sighed. With the GCPD's triumphant return to some state of vague, well-staffed normalcy, the return of Davey was a welcome embarrassment. And as for Jim's new, furry mantle.
"I can't believe you said the Sox would sweep the Yanks, Jim."
"Yeah, well, next person to take a picture gets to wear this for the junior high school tour, so I don't wanna hear it."
