reasons: to obtain property, to unite families, to carry on a bloodline,

The eldest Hale son had been promised the eldest Martin daughter before either of them had even been born. Both families were affluential in their own ways back then, but it was decided that combined, they would be unstoppable. Derek grew up knowing that he was arranged and had his entire life to mentally prepare for the Martin girl to turn eighteen so that they would start their lives together. He knew her a little, but not much. Derek was well older and therefore, they hadn't run in the same circles. Lydia was still in middle school when the bulk of his family was killed; in high school when his sister was murdered. Suddenly, Derek truly was the last option for carrying on the Hale genes and name. It would've been easy to back out of the arrangement — the Martins had approached he and his sister after the tragedy to ensure that plans were still in place — and Derek could have backed out. He probably should have. ...but it was what his parents had wanted and what Derek wanted was not to disgrace or disappoint them, now that they were gone.

It was shortly after her eighteenth birthday that her mother had set the date. Derek had mostly stayed out of the build up, not having anyone of interest to take part in a bachelor party and having no one to invite to the wedding or engagement party, by then. He'd let Lydia's mother do whatever she had wanted or needed to do, had foot the bill as promised in the agreement, and when the actual day came, that was when Derek came out of the woodwork.

The last time he'd seen Lydia in person before she walked toward him down the aisle, she'd been six. Mother Nature had been good to her, he remembered thinking; she was beautiful. He doubted she was looking forward to it — a girl that looked like that could have taken her pick and he doubted she'd want someone just shy of a decade her senior — and he wouldn't push any agenda on her. Derek wanted a family and wanted to carry on to the next generation, but he wouldn't push. He'd let her do things on her terms. Derek was ashamedly a little relieved not to have to slog through dating to find someone to spend his life with; he was fine with the arrangement and, admittedly, maybe looking forward to it a little. He had no such illusions that this girl would feel the same way. They'd seen each other for a few hours the night prior for the rehearsal dinner, but beyond that, it had been years since she'd seen him in person. Derek was going to have to take his time.

Once the ceremony was complete and the reception Mrs. Martin had insisted upon even though Derek had had zero interest had come to a close, Derek had driven Lydia back to the Martins' lake house, where they would be living until they closed escrow on the lavish home he'd purchased for them a little ways across town.

Lugging all of their bags into the lake house, Derek finally decided it was time to speak. They'd gone long enough without. "...I've never been here...I don't know—where am I taking all of this stuff...?"

Lydia didn't realize the gravity of what an arranged marriage had truly entailed until she was in middle school. She was a young girl, but her interest in boys was just starting to blossom, and her friends and the classmates that surrounded her all lived their lives blissfully ignorant as to how fortunate they were to have the freedom that Lydia never got to experience. School dances, first dates, first boyfriends, first loves... They were all around her and painstakingly obvious because Lydia knew that she couldn't participate in any of them, since her future had already been sold. When she was younger her parents didn't necessarily keep her from doing what she wanted, but even when she was a preteen watching a cute boy shyly from the other side of the classroom, Lydia knew that pursuing anything, even if it was innocent, was in complete vein. She wasn't allowed to fall in love, her parents and a man named Derek Hale took that away from her, and for those reasons a bitter resentment started to fester within her by the age of fourteen.

It had gotten worse in high school, because in high school it wasn't about stupid dances or play dates anymore. Her friends were actively dating, trading stories about where they went or what they did or how 'far' they've gone. It had gotten to the point where Lydia almost became an outcast, the perfect friend except for that one thing, and in reality that one thing was all that really mattered in high school. She controlled herself and her own natural urges when she met someone of the opposite sex that she was attracted to, decidingly pulling away instead of pursuing a friendship, and it seemed to be a theme that followed her throughout the entire four years. She was limited. She was already being handed off, and although it seemed like a dreamy concept when she was a little girl, Lydia now hated it, and she hated the people who were forcing her into it. She had argued with her parents about it several times to no avail, because to them the pros far outweighed the cons, and Lydia could never understand why their opinions meant more than hers. Derek Hale had a lot of money, and a lot of money meant a lot of power. She supposed her parents just wanted a piece of that, and Lydia was the perfect trade off.

She didn't plan any of the wedding; didn't even pick out her own dress. Lydia wanted to have nothing to do with it, and save for her stiff "I do" at the ceremony she hadn't said a word more. Deep down she knew that it wasn't entirely Derek's fault; his parents planned this out as well. But he had the money, he had more pull than her parents did, and Lydia for the life of her couldn't understand why a rich, admittedly attractive man would want to be arranged to a woman almost a decade his junior who he never really met before.

The drive to the lake house was silent and Lydia felt numb, staring out the window and watching the trees pass by. This was it, she felt like everything had come to a point and now it was all over. The ownership of her life and her choices were passed off from her parents to, apparently, her husband. She felt sick. Lydia let him take the bags, still wearing her dress and walking into the house before reaching up and tearing out the pins that kept her hair in a neat bun on the top of her head, her hair falling messily over her shoulders.

"The bedroom is upstairs." She spoke flatly but politely all the same, still very aware of how her parents would react if she was as nasty as she wanted to be to Derek right after the reception. "I'm going to take a shower. I need to get out of this thing."
