For the first time in a long time, he'd felt like he'd had something that maybe he could hang onto; that wouldn't just bring him more pain than joy. But, as always, Derek was wrong. Derek was always wrong, because they always left and he didn't know why he'd let himself be fooled into thinking something had suddenly and miraculously changed, because that was never the case. Derek is built to be alone.

He tries not to dwell on it, anymore. He tries not to think about her at all if he can help it. But every once in a while he'll hear a song on the radio in the car or he'll see a flash of blonde in a crowd and he's right back where he started. Alone and missing her.

The knock at the loft door is only half-unexpected and Derek rolls his eyes, pushes himself back up off the couch, setting his book down, and heads back to the door. "Stilinski, what?" he asks as he throws the door open, assuming it'll be Stiles for the third time today, because why not? Stiles is the only one who ever still has the balls to come around here anymore. Only, Stiles isn't the one standing outside the door. Derek looks like he's seen a ghost because he feels like he has.
