I DON'T KNOW THAT I KNOW YOU

It's funny how you can get close to someone without even really knowing who they are. This is a meme capitalizing on that particular trope: you know this person...but you have no idea that you know them as well as you do.

How to Play:
  1. Post with your character | fandom | and any preferences.
  2. Be sure to mention any scenarios you are interested or not interested in playing.
  3. Tag Others.
  4. Be awesome to each other.
  5. Have fun!

Use the RNG to help you pick or choose on your own!

PROMPTS

I’m obsessed with a food blogger who writes about cheap ways to be gourmet in your 20s and I flirt with them over comments but they never post pictures of their face and also there’s a really cute grocery bagger at the store down the street who teases me and always asks to join me for dinner and I definitely want to say yes.
  3. There’s an overnight IT person at school who always answers the phone when I call about a problem with my computer and I totally have a crush on their voice and their exasperation and also the bakery down the street is always running out of my fave scones and the adorable person behind the counter can’t hide their amusement and I think it’s super rude but also super cute
  4. My boss is always telling me how perfect her son would be for me and she promises he’s coming to the next holiday party and don’t worry he’s heard all about me too and also there’s this dude I slept with once a couple of months ago and sometimes he still sends me dick pics when I ask him to at 3 in the morning cause seriously dude’s got a good dick.
  5. Our kids are bitter rivals and the only time we ever meet is when we’re both called to the principal’s office and whatever maybe I think you’re kind of cute but your kid’s a monster and also someone keeps buying the last everything bagel at my favorite coffee shop 2 minutes before I get there in the morning and has heard about my plight and has started leaving me bragging notes about it.
  6. I hired a dog walking company and I’ve never met the person who comes to my apartment, but they leave me really cute notes and they give my dog presents and I kind of love them because my dog does and also one of the artists at this gallery opening is hella cute and I want them to paint me like one of their French girls.

Lydia was sitting on the right side of the middle section of chairs, three rows back in the lecture hall with a class-specific acquaintance — a girl she never hung out with, but always sat with and talked to in this and one other chemistry class — when he walked in with their professor. Her pen slipped between her lips and she caught the cap between her teeth, grinning.

"I want one," she said to the girl who snorted and shook her head.

"You would," the girl beside her said.

With a grin, Lydia took the pen out of her mouth. "I would. Watch and learn," she said as she got up from her seat, taking her notebook and pen with her. People were still filtering into the room, so she had time.

"Professor Stein?" she called softly as she made her way to his desk, "I'm sorry, I don't want to interrupt, it's just that I have classes during all of your office hours and I had one question on the online quiz due Friday, can I just talk to you for one sec?" she asked, her eyes shifting briefly to the professor's guest before returning back to him. "I think there's a glitch on the Blackboard is all," she added when he lifted his eyebrows and gestured gently for her to go on. "Question four didn't have a correct answer in the choice list when I tried to take it last night."

"Can you stay after a few minutes at the end of class for this, Miss Martin? We're going to be getting started here shortly and I'm not logged in to check it just now," he responded.

Lydia smiled. "Sure, of course. Thank you," she said genuinely. Then she turned her attention to the guest speaker. "I've been looking forward to this talk all month. No pressure," she said with a self-confident smile before heading back to her seat and dropping down beside her classmate.

"You're such a liar, I took that quiz this morning," the girl hissed.

"Shh, he'll be starting shortly," she reminded the girl with a mischievous look.

Barry wasn't doing this for the money as much as he was doing it because he was bored. His work was usually exciting until he got back to the lab, and he was so good at what he did that he was usually left sitting there for hours waiting for the tests to run themselves. So when the local university asked him to lecture for a chemistry course he was more than willing to do it, and the fact that it was Stein's course only made it better. They worked together on and off, but it was somewhat self validating for Stein to request his presence considering how amazing of a physicist he was.

He finished his morning run with the dogs that he walked, because Barry loved dogs as long as he didn't have to bring them home, and showered before heading to the university and finding Stein's lecture hall. The class was still filing in so Barry spent the time filling Stein in on what he was going to go over before they were interrupted by a pretty redhead who was, apparently, Stein's student. He stayed silent until she surprised him by acknowledging him directly, and Barry felt the heat rising to his face before he gave a sheepish, crooked smile. "I'm here to impress," he replied before he could stop himself, and his smile quickly faded when he saw the way that Stein was looking at him. "What? I was just- right yeah, okay, I'm just gonna..." he trailed off as he pointed awkwardly over his shoulder at his briefcase on the desk before turning to rustle through it, keeping his head down until he knew the red had faded away.

When class started Stein began by introducing Barry, and in his very Stein way he gestured to him with a "Mr. Allen?" before sitting at his desk and leaving Barry to fend for himself in a lecture hall that had at least seventy students staring at him with expectation. It took him that long to realize how bad of an idea this was. And how much he hated public speaking. "Um... hi." He gave an awkward wave to the group as a whole, glancing over his shoulder quickly at Stein who seemed much more interested in the papers on his desk than Barry standing there. He looked back.

"As Doctor Stein said, my name is Barry Allen, I actually graduated from this school almost three years ago now and I'm currently the Forensic Scientist and scene analyst for the CCPD. I'm here today to demonstrate to you how basic organic and inorganic chemistry can be applied to an every day situations along with not-so-everyday ones, including possible careers that are available in the scientific field." A crooked smile stretched across his face as he leaned back against the front of Stein's desk, a tell tale sign that he was probably going to make an idiot out of himself. "It's a great field to get involved in and there are a lot of job opportunities. The only pullback is that everybody tries to talk to chemists about their problems, since we're the ones who have all the solutions." Silence. "...Solutions, like, chemical solutio- okay." He glanced back at Stein in the middle of his sentence only to see his colleague staring up at him with disappointment over his glasses, and Barry's smile dropped again. "Right. So, about Chemistry..."

Despite the rocky start, the lecture went well. Barry brought them through his day, educating them about the default tests he had to run at the beginning of a crime scene and the way those tests led to others, depending on the results. More than once Stein had to quietly interrupt him because he had to clarify to Barry that he was starting to get into more detail than what the course had covered thus far, but eventually Barry got to the point where he had a feel for where they were at and only expanded when he felt it necessary, educating them in the process.

There were a surprising amount of questions in the end when he asked them if they had any, and although some of them were the expected 'how many crime scenes have you been on' and 'what's the grossest thing you've ever seen', which Stein shut down before Barry had to do it himself, a lot of the questions were surprisingly well thought out. It was nice to have something to concentrate on, since when he had to speak off the top of his head he found it surprisingly difficult to keep his eyes off of the shock of red hair in the middle of the room.

"Did I get everybody?" He finally asked after responding to a question on how they preserved blood samples for cold cases, eyes scanning across the room. "The CCPD Forensic Department is actually open for internships, I've brought applications for anyone interested and I'll be leaving them on Doctor Stein's desk."

Lydia grinned a little behind her hand as she rested her lips on her fist, her elbow on the arm of her chair as the guest speaker started his lecture with a horrible — adorable — science joke that nobody else seemed to get. Or if they did, they had lame senses of humor because no one seemed all that amused by it. Lydia thought it was clever, anyway.

By the end of the lecture, Lydia was a little put out by the fact that he was finished, because she'd been really interested in the material, but when he said that there were internships open, even though she was about two years too soon to actually need an internship, it was worth a shot, anyway. Applying early could only mean that maybe she could lump an extra practicum into her credits, which would look even better when it was time to start looking for jobs in the real world.

She got up from her seat and put away her notebook and pen as the rest of the class started to filter out, giving her friend a little wave as she headed back down toward the professor's desk. "I never really thought about forensics before, but you made a good case for it, whether you meant to or not," she said to the man. "Good talk," she added before approaching Professor Stein. "I talked to Cassidy a little and she said that she didn't have any problems with the quiz, so I'm going to try taking it again tonight and see if I get the same issue. If I do, should I take a screen shot and email it to you?" she asked, to keep up the ruse.

"Please do, Miss Martin," Stein answered and Lydia smiled before nodding and took one of the applications off the desk. "Thanks for this," she added to the guest speaker with a coy smile before she started to sashay slowly away, figuring he was going to be leaving the lecture hall anyway, because Professor Stein's next class was in a different lecture hall, so "Mr. Allen" was probably going to have somewhere else to be, at this point in his day, she'd assumed. If she was especially lucky, he'd have picked up on her interest in talking to him more and he'd follow her out. If she wasn't, well, she could just go home and see what kind of cute note the dog walker left her that morning.

Barry started to chat with Stein after he dismissed his class, leaning against the side of the man's desk as he did.

"Well. That wasn't particularly awful, Mr. Allen."

"You're welcome." Barry responded warm heartedly with a grin, shaking his head at the man while also keeping an eye on the students that were taking the applications he put down. Barry understood why the CCPD opened its doors for internships, but it was still frustrating considering Barry was the one who would have to keep an eye on someone who didn't even finish their degree to make sure they didn't end up blowing up his lab. He was, however, secretly pleased when the redhead returned, and he gave her a warm smile when she addressed him. "It's an interesting field. Less clinical, more hands on. You're welcome." He watched her as she started walking away, his head tilted slightly to the side, and it wasn't until Stein cleared his throat that Barry blushed and tore his attention away. She was probably way too young for him, and just because she was friendly didn't mean she was interested, but Barry grabbed his briefcase anyway and said his quick goodbye before chasing after her out of the room.

He walked behind her for a few feet as he argued with himself over whether he should bother approaching her or not, and he rubbed the back of his neck awkwardly before speeding up to fall into pace beside her on his way back to the parking lot. "Hi!" He began lamely, falling quiet as he struggled to think of something to say. Probably should have done that before he stopped her. "Um, if you were thinking about handing that in you might want to do it directly at the precinct, to either Detective West or me. We can make sure it gets into the right hands. If you were really interested, I mean..."

For a minute, Lydia actually thought he wasn't going to catch up with her and she was a little more disappointed by that than she would have liked. College was different, she kept reminding herself. She wasn't the Queen Bee, anymore, there were women to compete with for attention, now. Not just other girls.

But then she heard the greeting and smiled to herself, looking over at him. "Hi, yourself," she replied with a grin. Her eyebrows lifted at the instruction and she gave a mild facial shrug.

"Why would I take an application for an internship I didn't want?" she countered curiously. "Noted, though. I wouldn't want it to get lost in the shuffle, that would be really sad for you guys," she said, only half-joking.

"Oh, I get it, you're already a pro, then." Barry teased a little at her comment with a grin, the hand that wasn't holding his briefcase slipping into his pocket. "Just taking the course for formalities, huh? You've got a good professor here, by the way, Stein is a little rough around the edges but he's a genius. He'll be able to help you out in the professional world if you keep in touch with him, he's got military connections and everything."

He knew he was ranting but he could stop himself, which just made it worse. "And I won't let it get lost, I promise. It depends on your experience and the classes you're taking, but all of the applications have to go through me anyway since the intern will be working in my lab. So maybe we'll be seeing more of each other..." Lame. He almost winced at himself for how lame that was. Barry opened the door for her and moved into the parking lot, stopping when she seemed to be turning to a different direction.

"Hopefully I'll see you soon, miss Martin." He gave her his best attempt at a charming smile, which was actually much more charming than he thought, and he turned to head to his car. She was pretty. But getting hit on by some stranger in a parking lot probably wasn't his she planned to spend her morning. Barry didn't know how to do smooth or spontaneous.

He had stopped on his way home at a pet shop, not having the time to do so on his way to the university, and he picked up a little Kong toy along with a card to scribble down a quick note in his car. He had walked Prada that morning (such a stupid name for a dog) and he usually picked him up a gift when they were out, blatent favoritism, but for now he would just leave it in the mailbox since it wasn't in his time window to enter the home and take Prada for a walk.

'This is for Prada. I had an appointment this morning and didn't have time to stop with him, he was very upset with me, I could tell. If you keep it for yourself he'll tell me, so don't even think about it. Tell him it's from his buddy (he'll understand) and I promise we'll go to the park tomorrow to make up for it. Me and Prada, I mean, not me and you. Sorry, I'd invite you but between you and me he told me he likes guy time. Oh well.'

He had been leaving notes like that for weeks now. He didn't know who Prada's owner was, but the account was under the name 'Natalie', and the few notes he got back on the front door were definitely written by a woman. It was the only pet he did it with, but 'Natalie' seemed to enjoy them (at least, she never called him to complain and he was obligated to leave his number with his clients) and Barry liked writing them. He left the note and the 'I'm Sorry' card in the mailbox before heading home with every intention of enjoying the rest of his day off.

"I am, actually, they just wouldn't let me test out of the class because it's a pre-requisite course, smarty pants," Lydia replied smugly. "It's actually stuff I taught myself in sixth grade, but I like Professor Stein, so I don't mind it too much." She appreciated the little hint, though, that he'd given her about the professor and Lydia made a mental note to do her best to follow that tip and keep in touch with him once she'd graduated out of his classes. If nothing else, it wouldn't hurt to get a letter of recommendation from him; she already knew he was a renowned scientist of high caliber.

Knowing that Barry was the one who was going to be going through the applications was another good little tidbit for her to file away as well. Whoever said one shouldn't use their assets to help them climb the corporate ladder was clearly someone ugly. "Maybe...here's hoping," she said with a smirk as she turned toward the next classroom building. "Thank you," she said when he held the door open. "Only if we're both really lucky," she added with a wink before disappearing into the building.

When the last class was over, Lydia got into her car and headed home, grabbing the mail and making her way into the lake house where she'd been staying on her own. "Where's my baby?" she called out and Prada's claws came rapidly clicking over the hardwood floor in the hallway to greet her. "Ohhhh, hello my sweet boy," she cooed, scooping him up with one arm and heading into the kitchen where she set down the mail and started to go through it, laughing when she got to the Kong with the card taped to the packaging. She detached the card and set Prada down to open the toy, handing it down to him. "Oh boy, your buddy got you a new toy, look at that!"

Once the dog was on the floor again, contentedly chewing on the Kong, Lydia opened the card and laughed a little as she read it, rolling her eyes.

This had been going on for a while, now. Whoever the guy walking Prada for her in the morning was, he had made it pretty clear that Prada was a favorite. Sometimes, she wrote notes back, because she couldn't help flirting a little with the handwriting that seemed so interested in showering her dog with unpaid-for affection.

After hours of homework, Lydia decided she was too exhausted to bother with being witty in response to the card, and instead, she took her shower and went to bed. The next morning when she woke up, she did so to a text alert on her phone from her first class's instructor stating that the instructor was sick and class was cancelled. "Guess I won't have to leave a card after all, huh, my sweet boy?" she asked, scratching the dog behind his ears as she got ready for the day, deciding she might as well take Prada out herself since she was here and didn't have to be to campus for an extra hour.

Grabbing his leash off the hook in the front hall, Lydia bent down to clip it onto his collar and looked up at the door when she heard the key being pushed into the lock. "Hold on, one sec. I'm actually home, hold on," she called, standing back up and moving closer to the door and unlocking it, opening it with one hand as she turned to grab her keys off out of the little dish on the end table against the wall. "Sorry, hang on, my class got cancelled, so I can take him out today, it's no problem, but I wanted to thank you for the—" she stopped suddenly as she turned to face the guy on the other side of the door, finally, feeling Prada pulling at his leash and jumping to greet his walker. "...for the Kong...hi..." she said, looking surprised.

Barry enjoyed walking Prada; it gave him something to do in the mornings. Despite the ridiculous name, the dog was the sweetest he'd ever worked with, and Barry didn't get called in early unless someone died, which was a gruesome reality in his line of business. He had woken up late, so after showering, dressing and grabbing his coffee, his arrival at the lakehouse was delayed beyond his usual schedule. It wasn't an issue, though, considering that Prada was his only client that day, and Barry could spend more time walking him instead of rushing off to work.

He went to unlock the door before hearing someone call out, and Barry's eyebrows raised in surprise when he pulled the key out to wait. He had never met Natalie before, she was never home, and when she spoke to him through the door there was something about her voice that was strangely familiar... heavy, raspy, but with that lilt of femininity that made it unmistakably female. He backed up to put some space between the door and himself, and when it opened his face dropped in shock when the redhead who had been in Stein's class stood before him. Miss Martin, he had called her. Barry never caught her first name.

He was leaving notes in her home the whole time, completely unaware that she was a solid 10, pseudo flirting with a stranger who was apparently way out of his league. All he could do was stare for a few seconds before looking down at Prada jumping at his feet, and when Barry spoke his voice was weak and a little unsure. "Hey buddy. You didn't tell me who your mom was," he said it almost scoldingly as he picked the door up, scratching his head and kissing his muzzle before finally looking back at her.

"Hi." It was the same lame greeting as the previous day and Barry was thankful for the excuse to close his eyes when Prada started to lick his face. He craNed his head back out of the dogs reach. "Hey, stop, you know the rules. I see what you do with that mouth." He kept his eyes on the dog for a few seconds. "Don't worry about it. I like to pick him up little things here and there, he's a good dog, um," After chancing a glance back at her he put the dog down. "You're Natalie? You're the girl in Stein's class, right?" Of course she was, like he would be able to forget that face so easily. Barry finally chanced a grin. "We have to stop meeting like this."

So lame.

She couldn't help watching the way he interacted with Prada and the way that Prada ate up the attention, searching for more of it even when he was in the middle of receiving it. It wasn't like she didn't give her dog plenty of love, because she did, but she could understand the attachment that he'd grown to the dog walker, just for the regularity of the schedule. Especially since the guy always bought him little toys and treats.

"Well, it's still really nice of you, since you don't have to do it and he always seems to like them, so..." Lydia replied.

She shook her head a little. Imagine that, her dog walker was the hot guest speaker from class. Funny how life worked, sometimes. ...but that meant that the hot guest speaker from class who she was pretty sure was trying to flirt with her on the walk from Stein's lecture hall was also the witty dog walker she'd started to form some weird crush on based solely on written word and the little gifts he left her dog.

"I'm Lydia, actually," she replied. "Natalie's my mother, she started the account because she was recommended by a friend and something about a discount for her friend, I don't know. But Prada's my dog." Her lips pressed together in amusement at the end of his response. "Oh, I don't know, I kind of like meeting like this," she said, giving a facial shrug.

Prada started to pull on the leash again and Lydia looked down. "Oh, okay, okay, my sweet boy. I know you gotta pee, I'm sorry, come on," she said and gave Barry a little smile as she nodded slightly past him. "Excuse me..." she prompted him to move so that she could fit through the door and shut it.

There was a little flutter in Barry's stomach when Lydia clarified that she liked running into him, and it showed with a shy smile that rised from him. He had one of two choices, he could either walk away and let Lydia walk her dog in peace, or he could stick around and make more of an idiot out of himself. He was so close to just walking back to his car before she closed the door behind her, and before he knew it, Barry was moving beside her, walking in the opposite direction of his vehicle.

"I should probably join you," he reasoned. "I mean. I promised Prada, you know how it is." His hands slipped into his pockets as he walked beside her, looking down at the dog who was making an effort to sniff around and run between his legs at the same time, excited to have two people to walk with. He had no idea what he was doing... every relationship Barry ever had kind of fell into his lap. He was either hit on, or it was a coworker who he was able to build some sort of repertoire with. This was neither of this cases, this was just a gorgeous woman who was probably too young for him who happened to enjoy chemistry and have a cute dog. He was running blindly here.

"So, miss Lydia Martin. It usually doesn't take me two days to figure out someone's name. I have a feeling you were planning this." He glanced over at her with amusement. "Was this your plot all along? Hire the forensics guy to get you an in with the CCPD through an inconspicuous dog walking agency? You should know, my foster dad is a cop, so you need to watch yourself."

He shook his head, speaking more seriously. "And don't worry about it, I love getting stuff for Prada. He's a good boy. Only one who doesn't give me trouble, we're buddies. He's always complaining about how his mom never gets him nice things, he says he's deprived."

A little smile pulled at the corners of Lydia's mouth when she noticed that Barry seemed to be moving with her, rather than away. Suddenly, she wished that she had more than just an hour to play with that morning. "Oh, of course, yeah," Lydia replied with feigned seriousness as she looked up at him. "I'm sure Prada wouldn't have it any other way."

It was cute how he got on with her little dog. Most guys she'd dated — not that she was dating this one. Yet. — had found Prada's size to be an annoyance more than endearing. At best, they ignored her dog. At worst, one had kicked him. That guy had gotten kicked in response and he had a feeling she'd done more damage to him than he'd done to the dog, but she still felt like he'd deserved it. It was a nice change, being in the presence of a good looking man who didn't think her dog was a pest.

"Oh, was I?" she asked, laughing. "You're the one on the police, that doesn't leave a girl feeling all that confident about the authorities, you know, if you couldn't figure out her name in less than two days when she wasn't making any effort to hide it," she pointed out playfully. "And remember how the name is under Natalie?" she asked, tapping her nose with a grin. "I didn't hire the inconspicuous dog walking agency."

Her grin softened into something more of an endeared smile which then shifted back into something else closer to incredulous amusement. "Um, excuse me," she laughed, "I know he never said that because he gets nice things all the time. If he did say that to you, he's been lying and you've been duped by a dog."

No, no, no, this wasn't happening. Melody had been working for hours on finishing this paper, it was a huge part of her grade for the semester, and now her computer was saying the file was corrupted. If she lost all of her work, she was going to have to call out of work tomorrow morning to redo it and she could not afford to lose her job at the bakery. The hours were perfect with her class schedule and she loved working there since her mom and dad met working at a bakery. It just seemed right.

She took a deep breath to try and calm herself. Too bad she hadn't seen Micah recently and borrowed his power. Then she'd be able to fix this with a mere thought. No, at the moment, she had her mom's ability, which was handy for not getting sick or hurt, but wasn't going to help her pass American History.

Okay, the only thing she could do was call IT. Maybe that guy with the voice she liked would be working. Even if he couldn't figure out how to retrieve her paper, it would be soothing to listen to him talk for a while. It should probably worry her that she had to call often enough to have the number memorized.

S.T.A.R. Lab had closed on account of the explosion that had killed and injured so many people, cloaking the company in shame while it was at it and Cisco had been left without a job.

On a lark, he'd taken some crappy call center kind of job, figuring it'd at least scratch a little itch because it was overnight IT support for the local university. It wasn't actually a bad gig, really. It paid all right; it was a huge pay cut, but it was better than he'd probably end up doing anywhere else right now. S.T.A.R. Lab former employees weren't exactly a hot commodity right now.

"Campus IT," he answered, stifling a yawn behind his hand as he reached out with one hand to mute the mic so the caller wouldn't hear it. He unmuted again and leaned back in his chair. "How can I help you?"

It was him. Melody smiled, even though he couldn't see her through the phone lines. She could hear her brother mocking her for having a crush on some guy's voice, but she couldn't help herself.

"Hey, it's my favorite IT guy," she said. "I'm really hoping you can help. My computer's saying that my file is corrupted and I've been working on this paper for hours."

At the response, Cisco grinned a little and sat up again, a quiet huff of amusement escaping him. "It's my favorite technologically inept co-ed," he replied genially. She called a lot, he'd noticed, and he kind of liked it when she did because her tech issues were always easy fixes and she wasn't the type of caller that seemed to blame him for her own mistake just because he was on the other end of the phone trying to help her fix it.

Lacing his fingers together in front of himself and cracking his knuckles, Cisco nudged the table and the movement of the mouse brought his screen to life again. "Geez, I thought eventually you'd call me with an actual challenge!" he laughed. "All right, do me a favor click once on the file in its folder, right click and copy, then paste it onto your desktop so that we have another version of it to try to fix if the first attempt fails. Let me know when you've got that done and we'll get started."

"They might not challenge you, but they stress me out," Melody pointed out as she followed his instructions. She was a little bit Type A when it came to her studies, knowing that she needed to have an exemplary record in college if she wanted to get hired on by the SGC after graduation. Her lineage wasn't enough to guarantee that, nor would she want it to be.

She huffed a little. "Okay, I've got the copy made," she said. "Now what?"

"And then you call me and I ruin your night by making you look like a computer novice, I know, I'm the worst," Cisco teased back. "Okay, now, in Word, go to File, Open, and chose the file. Just click it once, don't double click to try to open. Just click it once to select it and then you see down toward the bottom of that little window where it says, like, File Name and there's a handful of drop down menus? There should be one that has 'Open' selected by default, you see that?"

While he waited for her to find it, Cisco opened a game of Minesweeper on his desktop and started to play. "Okay, once you've got that, then you want to click on the drop down where it has 'Open' and you want to choose 'Open and Repair.' That should do it. If it doesn't, I've got a couple other workarounds to try, but give that a shot first. You might lose a little bit of data that way, but losing a page is better than losing the whole document, right?"

"If this works, you will be doing the opposite of ruining my life," Melody assured him. The idea of losing hours of hard work made her want to cry. "It's doing that hourglass thing."

She impatiently tapped her nails against her desk while she waited to see if this worked. "So, IT guy, what do you do when you're not rescuing technologically inept co-eds?"

Cisco laughed a little. "Whoa, I didn't realize I was a life ruiner this whole time. Ay Dios mio, I thought I was just ruining your nights," he teased. "That's fine, it'll take a minute to try to recover the data. Let me know what it says when it's done."

That...was a loaded question. "Right now? Not much else besides looking for a job more my speed. The job search to get back into a lab hasn't been going all that well, though, so this'll do. Besides, what would you do without me if I wasn't here? You wouldn't cheat on me with another IT guy, right? Because that would really hurt my feelings."

"You're gonna leave me?" Mel asked. "I'll never graduate."

Man, how pathetic was she? Unlike her older brother, she hadn't met her life mate practically in the womb. In fact, her history with dating was abysmal, something her family never got tired of mocking her about. They would think she was ridiculous for having a tiny crush on a guy who was nothing more than a voice on the other end of the phone.

"I guess it's a good thing I like my job. If you abandon me, I can become a full time baker."

"I'm a mechanical engineer, I can't stay on the phones forever," Cisco pointed out with a grin.

If he was honest, this girl was probably the only thing he'd miss about this job. He sure as hell wasn't going to miss the pay. He did enjoy their banter, though, whenever she called in.

"Oh, come on now, at this rate, you'll graduate before I get out of here anyway. Then what am I supposed to do when my favorite girl doesn't give her weekly call because her computer hates her, huh? Who's the selfish one now?" he joked.

"Wow, you're a mechanical engineer?" That meant he had to be crazy smart. She knew some of the engineers who worked for the SGC. "One of my dads is a pilot in the Air Force."

Cameron would never let her hear the end of it if she asked for a favor to potentially get a boy a job. Especially a boy she never actually met in person. "I could always get a new computer, I guess."

Speaking of, she realized that her file finally finished processing and his fix had recovered it. "You are my favorite person ever," Mel declared. "I got my paper back."

"Yeaaaap," he replied, drawing the word out with a little frown. Had been, anyway, before the Particle Accelerator explosion sullied the names of anyone who'd worked on the thing...including Cisco's. "Oh, cool."

Cisco smiled a little. "You could, but then what if that one hates you, you'll be really screwed once you graduate and I'm not there to magically fix all of your problems," he pointed out playfully.

"Oh, nice, I was a little worried we'd have to try a few other fixes, but that's sweet. Maybe next time you'll call me with a real problem," he joked. "...anything else I can help you with?" And okay, maybe he was only asking because he wasn't really ready to go back to minesweeper all night and she sounded hot. Shut up, he thought to no one in particular that he imagined was criticizing that thought, that's a thing. People can sound hot.

Melody found herself oddly reluctant to end the call. It wasn't like she deliberately found ways to break things so she would have an excuse to call IT as often as she did, but she really didn't mind calling, especially when he was working.

And she realized that she didn't even know IT Guy's name. Mitch would have a field day.

"Yeah, where's the IT office anyway?" she asked. "I assume you're here on campus somewhere."

Oh man. That was super awkward, wasn't it? Mel grimaced and wished she hadn't asked. But since she had, she should tell him why she asked.

Cisco laughed. "That would be the best kind of weird," he replied. "But uh, I'm not usually in here, though, is the thing. I usually work remotely from home. My internet's down, though, they're working on the whole street tomorrow, I guess, but anyway that's why I'm in tonight. Usually, it's just easier to work from home."

"Oh. Well, it was a silly idea anyway," Melody said, feeling embarrassed about even suggesting it. Why would he even want cookies from some stranger he didn't know anything about. Other than her complete and utter idiocy with computers.

So, yeah, she should probably just end the call now. "Thanks for rescuing my paper."

Cisco frowned a little. The idea of finally meeting the face behind the hot voice was more appealing than he actually wanted it to be. "Nah, that would've been cool," he countered. "Sorry I suck."

Hmm. He actually sounded kind of disappointed. Maybe Mel wasn't as crazy as she thought she was. "Uh, yeah, I'm doing that right now," she said, rustling through her desk drawer until she came up with a flash drive shaped like an airplane.

"Have you ever been to the Sunshine Bakery?" she blurted out. "That's where I work. If you ever want to stop in for cookies."

"Okay, good. Actually, if you copy all of that text and paste it into a new Word document, you might be safer still, before you save it down to a flash," Cisco pointed out, glad for a reason to elongate the conversation just a little bit more.

Her question caught him off guard and it took him a second. She worked there...and he went there every morning, practically, only to almost always find that the chocolate chip muffins were gone and he had to settle for blueberry. The girl that worked behind the counter always seemed to find his suffering in that vein endlessly amusing, but she was cute, so he let it slide. Every day. "...yeah, yeah, I've been there. I might have to do that. With my luck, the chocolate chip will be gone when I do, though," he replied, just the teensiest twinge of bitterness creeping into his voice with that last bit.

Melody chuckled. "Sorry," she said, though her tone wasn't exactly apologetic. "I didn't know your name. You're just always the guy who wants chocolate chip and gets stuck with blueberry."

How had she not managed to recognize his voice? Probably because it sounded just different enough over the phone. What a weird coincidence.

"Come by tomorrow morning," she said. "I'll save you a chocolate chip muffin."

Leaning back in his chair again, Cisco smiled a little. She'd save him one. Trusting that he'd still show up, trusting that she wouldn't be wasting the $2.15 after tax by holding it back for him to come in. "Cool, I'll be there."
