After the car accident that killed her mother and sister, Malia Tate's father moved them away from California for a fresh start. Even after all these years, her memories of the night and how she managed to survive were lost to her. Occasionally she had nightmares and flashes of memory that didn't make sense, but her therapist didn't seem to think they were significant, so she tried to push them aside.

That didn't stop her from being drawn back to the west coast when it came time for college, much to her father's chagrin. He was concerned that being back there would dredge up unpleasant memories, but she was insistent and was thrilled when she received her acceptance to UC Davis.

Her first semester was a lot harder than she expected and she was grateful that it was coming to an end. After spending what felt like days on end in the library finishing her final paper for history, she was finally free. She just needed to turn in the paper tomorrow and then she could head back to North Carolina for a few weeks with her dad.

On her way back to her dorm, fat raindrops started falling from the sky. Of course she didn't have an umbrella. She quickened her pace, knowing that she needed to make it home before the skies opened and soaked her backpack, but didn't make it very far. A small coffee shop was up ahead and, though it was already closed for the night, there was an awning she could huddle under to wait out the worst of the storm. It was a small space and there was already someone standing there, but hopefully he wouldn't mind sharing.

Stiles didn't even own an umbrella, which he was starting to think was maybe not his best life decision, on the whole. He'd left the coffee shop about twenty minutes ago — if he used the term "left" loosely — after being politely kicked out at closing time, because he didn't have a ride and he'd been kind of waiting out the rain in the hopes that it would settle some before he had to give up and just walk the six blocks in the pouring rain because he couldn't stand under the awning of the Soulfull Cup forever.

He hadn't seen her coming, but he'd heard the footsteps in the puddles on the pavement and wasn't entirely surprised when someone joined him under there. It was the first shop on the street with somewhere to duck under for cover. What Stiles didn't expect, though, was for his new companion to be...well. To look like that.

"Hey," he greeted — awkward, so awkward. What the hell is wrong with me?? — and gave her a small smile.

Hmm. If she was going to be stuck in the rain with someone, at least he was cute. A little awkward maybe, but cute. And Malia was far from shy, so she had no problem chatting him up.

"Hey," she said. "I'm Malia. I was just finishing a paper in the library. I'll be so glad when this semester is over."

One thing she preferred about California to North Carolina was the weather. If she was back east, it would likely be about 40 degrees and she would be freezing. Calfornia's warmer temperatures made the precipitation a bit more palatable.

[Franky didn't even have the decency to put a sock on the door to warn her that she and Matty were already going at it. They just laughed under the covers as Mini packed up an overnight bag and whined loudly about her 8am class. Tossers.

[ Stiles has an early class in the nothing and he knows he should be in bed, but his roommate is out of town for a funeral and, okay, admittedly...Stiles had gotten used to having that other person in there. The other guy, an IT major from Milwaukee, is probably completely unaware of the kinds of fear that exist within Stiles. The things with which Stiles struggled back home and continues to struggle with in his sleep here in college are nothing beyond the things of horror movies and scary stories to Adam. Still, having that presence is calming, even if Stiles will never tell his roommate that. The panic attack that had come with returning to the room after his last class this afternoon to a note on his bed saying Adam would be back in a few days and could Stiles please take notes for him in their English class had hit Stiles hard and fast.

It's getting late and he knows he should be well asleep by now, but he can't make himself go back in the empty dorm room. So he retreated to the lounge and was half-reading, half-dozing when a girl approached him.

Stiles looks up and immediately recognizes her face, but it takes him another couple of seconds to place her name and where he knows her from to it because he's so tired ]

Well, that officially sucks.

[ The little pout of her bottom lip makes Stiles smile and he reaches over, using his first finger to push her lip back in. ]

I would, actually. My roommate left town for a funeral this afternoon while I was in class. He won't be back for a couple days, so yeah. You can have his bed if you want, you don't have to sleep on the floor.

No, I know.

[ He gets to his feet. Mini isn't Adam, but another person present is another person present. Hopefully that'll be enough to help him get to sleep. ...if it isn't, that opens a whole new can of worms and he'd really rather...not. ]

We can go. I was just trying to kill time and make myself tired. I'm close enough. [ He nods in the direction of the door to head outside and lead her to his dorm. ]

I guess. I get antsy if I'm in the room too long. It's too small, you know? I don't know.

[ In spite of himself, Stiles laughs. ]

Yeah, well, I don't know any upperclassmen and I don't have any money for a fake ID right now, so getting drunk isn't happening. ...maybe I should try wanking myself to sleep...I wonder if that actually works or whether it makes it even worse...

[ His tone suggests that he's actually pondering that potential possibility, but it's feigned and the smirk on his face says so.

Stiles leads her into the dorm and, because it's so late, the front desk is empty and he has to use his student ID to gain access to the stairwell. He leads Mini up ten flights of stairs to the fifth floor and down the hall a little ways, showing her where the unisex bathroom is, in case she needs it, because there isn't a women's one on this floor, and then he stops in front of his room. Hanging from the door is a small whiteboard that spans the width of the space and there's a dragon drawn on it in green and red dry erase marker — Adam's contribution — blowing fire onto PENIS! in block letters — Jake, down the hall did that — and a cartoonish looking hand is scrawled in the bottom corner in blue — Stiles's. There's little stupid notes written to or from he, Adam, and Jake as well as random doodles from the other guys and girls who live on this floor, but those are the most prominent.

Stiles pulls out his student ID again, slipping it into the key card slot like a hotel room door. He's impressed, he has to admit, with the security of this place, but that doesn't always make him feel better about being away from the pack.]

Don't mind the mess...sorry.

[ Stiles pushes the door open and reaches in to flip the light switch on the wall up to illuminate the room in a sickly fluorescent, hospital-looking glow. Guess all they money they could've been spending on proper lighting was diverted into security.

On Adam's side of the room, the bed is neatly made, the desk is empty of clutter, and the tiny closet is organized. ...Stiles's side of the room looks like a tornado hit it. It's...a work in progress. ]

Well, you know boys. You get one off and then it's right to sleep. I'd definitely give it a go if I was you. [She laughs.

When they get to the room she takes in all the surroundings. The room looks a lot like hers and Franky's, except Franky's is the side that looks like it was hit with a wrecking ball. If she had a dollar for every discarded condom she found on the floor, she'd have enough money to hire a cleaner.]

I've seen worse. [She winces, though unless she went through the debris with a glove and blacklight she can't be sure. She points to the clean side of the room.]
That one's mine for the night? [She asks hopefully.]

This was the 23rd century. They lived in a time where planet Earth thrived without war, poverty, or famine. They could travel to far off worlds or transport themselves over great distances in a matter of moments. Hell, they even had cars that hovered. And yet, for all of their scientific and technological achievements, they still could not accurately predict the weather. Janice cursed this fact under her breath as she dashed across the courtyard of Starfleet Academy, trying her very best to avoid the growing puddles that were scattered along the way. She was usually far more prepared for the small, unexpected things. And as the former personal yeoman to Captain James T. Kirk, she had to be. Janice was, however, willing to cut herself a little slack in this instance. After all, she had been on the Enterprise for a couple of years and, perhaps more obviously, there was no weather in space.

Janice, now a cadet in her own right, quickly scanned her surroundings for any means of shelter from the downpour while she clutched her backpack close to her chest, as though it would actually help the books and devices inside from getting waterlogged. Still something had to be better than nothing, right? When her eyes caught sight of an awning across the way, the yeoman—no, the cadet hurriedly set off in its direction, paying mind to the fact that there was another person standing beneath it... a girl, by the sight of her uniform. And as Janice approached her—all while looking like a drowned rat, she was certain—she flashed a sheepish smile. “Hey, got room for one more?”

[ I'm so sorry. Something happened irl and I needed to take some time away. I will tag Derek and Janice's thread later today when I get home from work. Hope everything is going well! ]

Joey never gave a whole lot of thought to checking the weather before heading out for class in the mornings. One would think that after a year of getting caught unexpectedly in situations just such as this, she would've taken the hint that the Universe was trying to give her and that would've changed but...one would be wrong. Because, once again, here she was, caught unprepared for the rain and standing under an awning waiting for the worst of it to taper off before making a go at heading back to her dorm.

The other woman approached and Joey shifted over a little to make more room. "Oh yeah, totally. You forgot an umbrella, too, huh?" she asked, looking a little amused, but mostly just feeling less stupid because she wasn't the only one who neglected that little helpful tool before heading out that morning when the skies were just cloudy and not necessarily threatening the rain they were experiencing now.

( ooc: no worries at all, I hope everything is okay now! )

Janice breathed a quick "Thank you!" as she stepped forward, joining the other girl beneath the shelter of the awning. She wasted no time in unzipping the bag she had been clinging onto and checking the contents within, making sure that everything was okay before setting it down at her feet. However, when the question was asked, she glanced over at her and gave a small chuckle as she brushed the wet strands of hair from her own face. "Yeah, I guess you can say that. Although I could have sworn the forecast said it'd be dry..." If Janice had known otherwise, she would have grabbed an umbrella as mentioned by the cadet. At the very least, she wouldn't have spent so much time on her hair that morning; she almost dreaded the thought what it must look like now.

Instead, she turned her attention to the younger girl, only to then come to the realization that she hadn't introduced herself yet. "Anyway, that's enough of me complaining. Hi! I'm Janice," she announced with a smile that faltered slightly when she went to raise her hand to offer it in greeting and then withdrew it after she considered the current state she was in: cold and wet. "Oh, uh... On second thought, maybe I should spare you the handshake."

[ Things were still pretty hard, and I was having trouble finding my muse for a little afterwards, but they're starting to get better. Anyway, I just wanted to apologize again and say thank you for being so awesome. <3 I'm on my linch break atm, so I'll have to get to Derek's post later tonight after work. "I forgot to check the forecast," Joey admitted, looking sheepish. "I just looked at the sky and it didn't look so bad when I came out this morning, but I guess that was a mistake, huh?"

Huffing a soft laugh as the other woman introduced herself, offering a handshake she then went back on, Joey shook her head. "It's fine. I'm Joanna," she replied. "Hi. Nice to meet you. Which program are you in here?" she wondered aloud.

[ Aww I'm sorry! I'm glad they're looking up, but don't even worry about it, it's totally fine! ♥ You take care of you, first and always! ]

"Ah, I like it. You went old, old school," Janice noted playfully with a small laugh, hoping to try and find a way to not let the other cadet feel too bad about it. She then turned her gaze toward the downpour for a moment before speaking again in reassurance. "I wouldn't say it was any more of a mistake than the one I made," she remarked and gave a small shrug, then continued, "To your credit though, we are in California. People don't exactly come here expecting rain."

When the other girl introduced herself, Janice couldn't help but smile a little. She recalled hearing a name like that once in passing and thinking that it sounded pretty; however, for some reason, she just couldn't remember where or how the mention came about. Oh well, she thought herself, not a big deal. "It's nice to meet you, too, Joanna. I'm actually going through the communications program. What about yourself?"

Joey laughed, shaking her head. "Old school, I like that. It sounds nicer than the truth which is that I'm just too big an idiot in the mornings to plan ahead properly," she replied. "But that makes me feel better. I should still make a better habit of checking. This is like the third time this has happened to me since I started here," she sighed, rolling her eyes at herself and smiling.

"Oh, cool," Joey replied, smiling a little more brightly. "I always thought that was kind of neat. I'm in medical; nursing," she added. She resisted the urge to let herself wonder if maybe, by the end of the conversation, Joey would've made herself a friend. Because...that was lame, trying to decide whether she was about to make a friend just by talking to someone under an awning, who did that?

Janice glanced over at Joanna with a sympathetic smile. She wasn't exactly a stranger when it came to making self-deprecating remarks of her own. And yet, even as she listened to the other girl make hers, she couldn't help but feel that Joanna was still being a little hard on herself. Before she realized it, Janice's caretaker instincts kicked in and refused to let this poor girl dwell on her troubles much longer, deciding to instead draw her attention towards something more constructive. "Well, I glad you feel better about it. And that's a great idea, by the way. Nothing wrong with making a good habit," she assured when she bent down to reach into her bag.

She then thought to make one more addition: "I am gonna bestow you with some unsolicited advice, though... Things still might not turn out as you expect, as demonstrated by yours truly," Janice paused for a moment to flash a quick smile, wet strands still clinging to her face all the while as she went on to continue, "So just in case that happens — and chances are it will — always make sure you have a backup." With that, the woman stood up straight and displayed the items she had just retrieved: a brush and hair tie. "Anyway, that's enough of me lecturing. Do you mind if I...?" the woman gestured to her hair, figuring that Joanna would understand her partially wordless request

"Really? I know a girl I used to work with would love to hear that," Janice announced with a chuckle, even though she was certain that Uhura, being one of the best in her field, was well aware of just how "neat" communications was. Still, it was always nice to hear when someone's line of work was appreciated. However, it was the thought of her former colleagues, and now the mention of medical, that caused the very faintest falter in her smile. She had admit how strange it was to find something very familiar about a stranger and not be able to put a finger on why. And what was stranger still was the fact that it wasn't the first time since meeting her. Maybe it was all just a coincidence? Either way, Janice wouldn't know unless she asked, "I'm sorry, I know this might be a little weird of me, but you seem really familiar. Is this your first year here?"

Self-deprecation, sadly, came so naturally to Joey at this point in her life that she didn't even realize she was doing it half the time. Subconsciously, she believed something to be inherently wrong with her that her mother could — and would — walk out on she and her father and then her father would leave her with his sister while he went off into space on the Enterprise. It was hard for a little girl, as she had been at the time — six and then twelve years old, respectively — not to place some blame for her parents' actions on herself, whether or not they were merited. Even as an adult, now, she struggled with those feelings. They tended to manifest themselves in those self-deprecating remarks without her even knowing that they were there at all.

A little smile slid over Joey's lips at Janice's encouragement and subsequent warning. She laughed a little and cocked her eyebrows once, giving a nod. "That's fair enough," she agreed. "Although, I imagine that at least getting into the habit of checking will cover my butt more often than it won't," she said, compromising in her own mind.

Janice pulled out a brush and a hair tie and her question trailed off as she started to ask it. "Oh, no, go for it," Joey replied, waving a hand dismissively as she smiled. Far be it for her to tell someone they couldn't get their wet hair out of their face. If she had a brush and a ponytail holder, she'd probably already have done the same thing without having thought to ask whether Janice minded.

Her own arms wrapped tightly around herself to hug herself against the chill in the soft breeze that carried the mist of the rain under the awning, invading her safe space from it. Eventually, Joey was just going to have to make a run for it and get wet. If she went when there was at least a little bit of a lull, she could manage to get back to the dorm before she looked like a drowned rat, she hoped, and once she got there, she could change into dry clothes after taking a hot shower and she'd be just fine.

The question had Joey looking over at Janice again and she smiled. "Yeah, first year," she replied. Janice looked a bit older and she wondered whether Janice knew her mother or father. ...not that knowing either of them probably would've garnered any real discussion, she thought, but maybe the resemblance was more than Joey realized. "My dad's an alum?" she offered awkwardly, giving a little shrug and a sheepish smile.

Just like her shelter partner, a smile appeared on elder cadet's features when she heard her reply and choice of words. Well, she wasn't wrong. Looking before leaping was a tried and true method. Janice wouldn't dare sway anyone from such a disposition, especially one that she wished she had when she was younger. Nevertheless, her own advice had been unwarranted, yet it was thankfully not unwelcome from what she gathered of Joanna's response. And as soon as she was given the okay, Janice returned a quick, laughing "thanks" and went straight to work on her hair, seeming to not miss a beat even as she continued to speak with the younger girl.

"Truth be told? Yes, it probably will," Janice stated with a little chuckle, all the while brushing the long strands up towards the crown of her head where they were held in a firm grasp. A few well-practiced twists of her hand were all it took to turn her wet tresses into a clean bun... Well, as clean as she could make it without using a mirror. It was then that she continued, "But still, it's good to get into that frame of mind. Not enough people do, if you ask me." One name quickly came to mind as she spoke, but she made sure to keep it to herself. After all, Jim Kirk had built the foundations of his reputation and career by breaking rules and taking risks, so he would have likely been a poor example of that, anyway.

The response to her last question drew another smile from her, almost masking the quick manner in which she observed Joanna's little movements as she wrapped her arms around herself and then shrugged at the mention of her father being an alumni. Janice was satisfied enough with that. "Okay, that must be it then. How exciting, though! First year and you've already got a little bit of history here. Not bad," she stated with a small chuckle, "How's your experience been so far?"

However, her attention soon turned away from the subject of school and alum parents towards the fact the the young cadet seemed to have her arms crossed. And that's when it hit her like the gust of wind that pulled the chill and spray of the rain in its wake; the poor girl was probably cold. That wasn't to say that Janice wasn't cold herself (she certainly was), though it helped that she had been running and moving a little only moments before. Joanna, on the other hand, had not. A hint of concern etched itself onto her face as she furrowed her brows at the girl. "You haven't been standing out here long, have you?"

[ Hey, I'm sorry for disappearing like that. Things got crazy again irl and I was struggling with pulling my head out of a funk. Anyway, I know its been a while and it seems like things might have quieted down around here, but I just wanted to leave you some replies for Joey and Derek. I would love to continue with the thread(s) if you'd still be interested. If not, then I completely understand. I hope everything is well! Take care! ♥ ]
