THE INSOMNIA MEME

We all have those nights where we can't sleep...either you're waking up, you can't fall asleep, or something. That's the kind of night you're having, you may have been laying in bed for hours, maybe a little less, but tossing, turning, and counting sheep isn't helping! So, what should you do? Obviously the answer is to get out of bed, and wake someone up. If you can't sleep obviously they shouldn't get to either!

Borrowed/taken from BAKERSTREET

How to Play:
  1. Post with your character | fandom | and any preferences.
  2. Be sure to mention any scenarios you are interested or not interested in playing.
  3. Tag Others.
  4. Be awesome to each other.
  5. Have fun!

Use the RNG to help you pick or choose on your own!

PROMPTS
  1. FEAR: Maybe you're hearing strange, indeterminable noises; maybe there's a severe storm happening outside; maybe you watched a scary movie before bed? Whatever the reason, you're terrified and it's keeping you awake. You just want to wake someone else up so they can protect you from the monster in your closet.
  2. HUNGER: Your stomach is growling and it just won't stop. Or perhaps your throat is so dry you could cough up a tumbleweed? Well, you've gone to the kitchen to remedy this and hey, that was a pan that just dropped on the floor. It was loud enough to wake the dead! Oops.
  3. PAIN: Your body is completely worn out, be it from exercise, battle, sickness, or what have you. Either way you're in enough pain to keep you from sleeping, so maybe someone else has a home remedy or something, or can at least help you take your mind off of it.
  4. SOLITUDE: For some reason, your bed just feels so empty at the moment. You're feeling terribly lonely and really just want someone to keep you company for a while. Maybe it'd be easier to fall asleep if you're with them...
  5. DISCOMFORT: Your room is an oven. Either that or a freezer. Or maybe this bed is just really uncomfortable? Who knows why you can't get to sleep, it feels like it could be anything. Why even bother trying? Maybe someone else can preoccupy you until you feel tired enough to ignore your discomfort.
  6. PENSIVE: Something's on your mind, and no matter how hard you try to focus elsewhere, it's just not going to work. Your body may be tired, but your mind is incredibly busy and it's virtually impossible to get to sleep. Surely, talking it out with someone else will help?
  7. SADNESS: Something terrible has happened that day, perhaps; or you could just be severely depressed. Either way you're trying your hardest not to cry yourself to sleep, and it's not working at all. Better find a way to get it out of your system somehow; you need a shoulder to cry on.
  8. ANGER: You are just... fuming. Who knows why - that annoying dog is barking again, or maybe the people next door are getting busy and keeping you awake. Whatever the reason for your ire is, you'd better put an end to it so you can get some damn rest already! Go wake up a friend so you can complain to them.
  9. RESTLESS: You're far too energetic to sleep right now. Maybe you're just trying to do so out of necessity - you have to be up early tomorrow! But you just don't think you'll be able to fall asleep for a while now, so why waste the time trying to sleep when you could be doing something else? Namely bothering someone else - you're totally jealous because they're getting more sleep than you.
  10. WILDCARD: Not interested in any of the options or have an idea of your own? Do your own thing; you do you!

Dave likes Caiti. She's sweet, genuine, affectionate, and they always seem to have a good time together. It's easy to spend time with her, and Dave hasn't felt that in some time. Sure, it all started in a 'one night stand' sort of situation, but Dave has never excelled with that sort of thing. He's bad about buying the girls flowers afterward, which apparently doesn't give the indication that you aren't interested in dating them. Though, to be frank Dave is one of those guys that probably was interested, and the girls he chose just found him...slightly strange.

Caiti doesn't seem to, though. And that's what makes it easy to spend time with her.

Dave sighs from his spot in bed, attempting to do his best not to wake Caiti up. They aren't dating, but he'd be lying if he said that he didn't want to be dating her...because of all of the aforementioned reasons. The problem is....well Cass, as always. He's not dated since her, and what if he screws it up? Obviously, he needs to quit worrying about it, but it's still on his mind, even though they're just kind of...having fun. Plus, his damn knee. With another sigh, Dave slowly scoots away from Caiti as best he can before he slips out of the bed, pulling his boxers on. What dave hadn't expected, though, was to knock the lamp over on the bedside table and send it crashing to the floor to shatter into pieces.

"Shit...." Dave hisses, standing where he is, looking back at the bed, as if he's been caught doing something wrong.

If you were to ask Caiti where she sees herself in five years, it isn't with a white picket fence, a husband, and 2.5 kids, living in the suburbs. Her career drive is too high for her to settle for the idea of that sort of life. Caiti wants to be on Broadway. She's settled, though, in Los Angeles, because it's a decent way to network and build a behind-the-scenes resume to start than it would be in New York and it was closer to school. She wants Broadway; she'll happily settle for Hollywood.

But if you ask her where she thinks she'll actually be and whether her life goals mesh with her career ones, you'd see a contradiction. She wants the apple pie life, she just knows it won't get her where she needs to be from a career standpoint. So when Caiti goes out with guys, she keeps them at an arm's length. She never really tries to get the title of "girlfriend" to come out of their mouths when they're talking about her and she doesn't ever slap "boyfriend" labels on them, either.

...Dave blurs the line.

They have fun together and he's an actor — a successful one, at that — and he understands the conundrum she faces. More, really, than anyone else she's met since college. They have fun together and it's chill and Caiti really likes that. So, when he's around and not working, she stays. They talk, they fuck, they sleep, and it's kind of nice to have that other person there. It's especially nice to fall asleep with someone rather than trying to get comfortable when the other side of the mattress is cold and unused.

Caiti sleeps the best when she sleeps with Dave, but tonight, that's apparently...not going to be a thing. She wakes with a start to the sound of a crash and an expletive that would suggest one thing is very much connected to the other. Once her heart stops racing at the perceived threat of an intruder and her sleep-addled brain catches up to the present, Caiti moans a soft protest at the interruption and she pushes herself upright. "What happened? Are you okay?"

Dave feels the guilt hit instantly. The goal had been not to wake Caiti up, but he'd done exactly that, anyway. Standing there, in his boxers, Dave frozen, looking at the gorgeous redhead in his bed. She was pretty adorable minus the bedhead, but with it...even more so. "Sorry, I'm fine, it's okay I just broke the lamp."

Dave reaches up to scratch the back of his neck, a bit sheepishly, without even thinking about it. It's definitely one of his ticks, even if he doesn't actually realize it. He's not sure if Caiti is awake awake or if she's just sort of startled awake and ready to fall back to sleep, but she did ask. "I was just getting up, my knee's bothering me...can't sleep. I didn't mean to wake you up, though, so just stay in bed, I don't want you to step on any glass." Dave explained before moving to step carefully around the broken lamp and heading toward the bathroom, pulling the trashcan out and heading back to the mess he'd made.

Bracing his right hand on the side of the bed, Dave lowers himself with a bit of a wince and a grumble....either the weather, or something bothering the old injury. Sometimes the damn knee and ankle just ache. Other times it's because it's going to, or is raining. It's just hard telling.

He looks like a deer caught in headlights and Caiti gives a sleepy little giggle, laying back down and shifting onto her side to face him. "Well, what'd you do that for?" she asks with feigned seriousness. Before she can offer to help, Dave's already telling her to stay in bed. With a soft sigh, she sits up again as he disappears, grabbing her phone off the bedside table and opening the flashlight app, illuminating the room.

Dave returns and she can see that his knee is bothering him maybe more than he let on, so she climbs out of the bed carefully, lowering herself to the floor. "Here, go get the broom. I'll get the big pieces, Dave, it's fine," she reassures him, wanting him to get up again because she can only assume that the position he's in is going to aggravate the injury and she doesn't mind helping.

Dave feels bad because he didn't intend to wake Caiti up. In fact, he had been attempting to be as stealthy as possible so that he didn't disturb her. Of course, he enjoyed her company, but that didn't mean he wanted to keep her up all night while he was having issues sleeping.

When he comes back and she's already got her phone flashlight on, he can't help but wish he'd just laid there instead. He can't go back in time, though. Looking up, rather than down at the pieces of glass on the floor, Dave gives Caiti a small smile. "Be careful, I don't want you to get cut." He can't help himself, but rather than argue with her...despite not wanting to keep her up...Dave gets up with a few cracks and pops and makes a quick trip to the kitchen, coming back with both broom and dustpan.

"I'm really sorry about waking you up." He apologizes again, pulling the dustpan from where it fits onto the broom. "I didn't startle you too bad, did I?"

Caiti nods a little, giving Dave a warm, if a little tired, smile back. "I know, don't worry. I will be," she promises. When he pushes himself up again, Caiti can hear some of the joint pops and she winces a little for him. She's never had a lasting injury and she's glad, but she can't help wondering what living with one must be like; whether he's gotten to used to it that he doesn't even feel it half the time, or whether the pain is so chronic and dull more often than not, that he's just gotten especially good at pretending.

Dave comes back with the broom and dustpan and Caiti has propped her phone up against the leg of the nightstand, and is plucking up the bigger pieces of glass to drop into the waste bin. "No, I'm fine," she assures him, looking up. "Don't worry about it, Dave, seriously. We'll just clean it up and get back in bed and, you know, then we make out a little. Everybody wins," she jokes, giving him a little smile to let him know that she's down for it even though she's mostly just searching for levity and won't be upset if he's too tired or not feeling it.

Cass hated being woken up. Dave remembers that very well, but he's never been the sort of guy that wanted to be rude and make someone get up with him, or anything like that. And he's used to taking care of the people that mean the most to him in whatever ways he can. So, despite the fact that it feels automatic to try and get her to stay in bed, he doesn't do that. Cait is helping him, after all, and he does appreciate it because bending down just the once wasn't really all hat much fun.

Tonight's just one of his rough nights. It's not always this achy and bothersome, which is good. He'd be lying if he said that it wasn't likely to keep him up longer, though....especially combined with not being able to shut his mind down.

"All right, I'll do my best to stop worrying." Dave nods and then bursts into laughter at her comment about making out a little. "Very specific solution there." He teases, sure that it might take his mind off of things, at the very least, if they actually even try it....and if his knee decides to cooperate with him. And if not she'll probably manage to get back to sleep and he'll be sure not to wake her up this time around. "I think you just want to make out with me." He teases.

One of the traits Caiti is most proud of in herself is how laid back she is. If she's not working on something professional or school-related, she's a very dust-your-shoulders-off kind of person and she likes to keep it that way. Little things like being woken up by accident aren't worth putting the effort into being upset about, in her opinion, so she just...doesn't. There's no reason to get bent out of shape, anyway.

Smirking, Caiti finishes throwing away the last largish piece of glass. "You're going to have to get the rest with the broom," she tells him, "and I know. I'm really good like that. I can find a solution for juuuust about anything," she adds with a little wink.

A little facial shrug to match the one her shoulders give follow his playful accusation. "Well, I mean...you know, that's a bonus, I have to admit," she says, climbing back into the bed so that she doesn't step on any of the little pieces of glass and also so that she's out of Dave's way for him to sweep where she'd been crouched in case there was glass there and she just happened to have been lucky enough to miss any tiny shards.

"I think I can manage that." Dave laughs a little bit before he moves to do exactly that, using the broom to sweep everything into a pile (dustpan still in one hand). Dave isn't incapable at all. He's actually fairly tidy at times, and definitely knows how to do the things like cook certain things and clean his own house. He could pay people too, but Dave chooses to do for himself because he's down to earth, or so he's been told.

"How did I manage to find a genius?" Dave jokes before he moves to sweep the bits of glass from the lamp up into the dustpan, pausing in his work to look up at CAiti. "I'm okay with making out with me being a bonus." He jokes before lifting the dustpan and dumping it into the trash can with a bit of a sigh. Murmuring that he'll be back, Dave picks up the trashcan and the broom and quickly puts both back where they belong.

He also grabs two bottles of water, and some Aleve for himself, and then heads back to the bedroom. Beelining for his side of the bed, Dave holds a bottle of water out to Caiti. "Thought you might want one, since I was grabbing myself one, just in case."

"Because you're really lucky," Caiti teases back, curling her body into the mattress after slipping back under the covers. She likes Dave. A lot. Enough that she'd been wondering a little lately whether maybe they ought to just call this thing between them what it really was. Dave leaves the room and Caiti shuts off the flashlight app only to turn it right back on again, hearing it beeping at her to warn that it was going to shut itself off if she didn't do it first.

When Dave returns, Caiti shifts to put her phone down again and reach for the bottle of water. "Ooh, thank you!" she chirps. She opens the bottle to take a few sips while waiting for Dave to join her in bed again. And, once she's reasonably sure he's settled, she shoots closer, curling against him and leaning to kiss him.

"Did you take anything for the pain?" she asks softly, concern tinting her tone as she strokes his jaw lightly with one hand.

Dave uncaps his water and takes a relatively big gulp of water, sort of finishing washing down the pills, a grin on his face at his companion. It doesn't take him long to settle in his place on the bed, just hoping that the movement mixed with the aleve will make all of the difference. He doesn't want to keep Caitlin up all night. "You're welcome."

He automatically puts his arm around her once she's settled against him and kisses her back. This is the kind of thing he's wanted for some time. Someone to be here. They're not technically dating, but he wonders if they did...if it'd scare her off, or change anything?

"Aleve, it should help. I just get achy and sore sometimes." Dave reaches up to grab Caiti's hand and brings it up to his lips to press a kiss to her palm. "I'll be fine." It was nothing new for him, really, but it didn't mean it wasn't annoying...and disruptive.

"Oh good," she replied with a little smile as he kisses her palm. The little things like the way he does that — the way she thinks nothing of licking her fingers and pushing the cowlick on the back of his head down when they're in the car before he feels her off at the coffee shop so he can head to set — are intimate simplicities they don't even think about anymore and maybe that's an indication she shouldn't keep ignoring.

"I know you do. Here's hoping that helps," she says genuinely. The hand that hadn't been on his face and isn't subsequently held in his own makes its way to his bare chest and starts to trace little absent shapes there. "We've been seeing a lot of each other lately," she observes, her eyes on her fingers as they move before shifting back up to his. "I know we said...we were just having fun and that's totally fine with me, but uh...I was just thinking, kind of, like...what if w weren't? Just having fun, I mean?"

Dave doesn't always think about what he's doing before he does it, but....then again he's always been the guy who doesn't know how to have a one night stand....or just to have fun. He's the monogamous sort of guy who is usually in a relationship. He knows how to be a boyfriend, even if he feels he isn't the best one out there, because he feels at fault for what happened with Cass.

So, Dave feels worry hit him instantly as Caiti takes the serious turn he wasn't expecting. "YEah, yeah, we have." Dave agrees, looking up at the ceiling for a moment and then at Caiti. "What if we weren't just having fun.....well, I think that people still call that dating?" Dave speaks lightly, his arm around her not faltering and the hand attached to it rubbing lightly on her shoulder. "So...what if we were dating?" Dave asks, not really posing it as a question so much as putting it out there. What would be different? "It'd probably be great." Dave comments before he can think not to. "I mean, it'd just be...what we're already doing plus some...probably more dates and flowers and y'know...." Dave knows he sounds stupid, so he laughs. "And I sound like an idiot, but.....if we were dating...it'd be great...I'd be fine with that too."

Caiti can't help the smile that creeps over her lips as he speaks. She doesn't think he sounds like an idiot, but she thinks it's adorable when he gives that little laugh that tells her he thinks he does, before he even says it. "No you don't," she counters, kissing him jaw.

She pulls back a little bit so that she can look at him. "...do you want to?" she asks and she doesn't look hopeful or worried, just genuinely curious. Caiti knows a little about the breakup with his last girlfriend. Whatever of it was public, anyway, which was...probably more than Dave would've liked. Definitely more than she would've.

So Caitlin isn't really sure if he's ready to date again or if he could trust someone else like he trusted her, after she betrayed it. Some people take longer to get back on the saddle for lesser offenses by an ex. She doesn't want to push him, but a part of her thinks why not date him? They're pretty much already doing that, the only difference is that she doesn't have to worry about being on the cover of the next gossip rag, yet, but she also doesn't get to go with him to premieres and the cool parties he's always talking about. ...more over, she doesn't get to call him her boyfriend; right now, he's just some guy — a really nice guy, but still — that she sleeps with now and again. Maybe it wouldn't be so bad to change that.

If nothing else, Caiti is sweet for not thinking that he sounds like a complete idiot. And Dave really does appreciate her, a lot, even if he hasn't known her that long. So, he can't help but lean into the kiss.

And he also can't help but think about what it'd be like if they were dating....and to him it doesn't sound bad. He sucks at the part of dating that comes before being together, dating, monogamous, and carrying the full blown title. So, her question leads him to a very easy answer. "Yeah, I do." Dave can't help but chuckle at himself. "I'm not eager....at all." He jokes but presses a kiss to her forehead anyway.

"I like you, and I like having you around. And I'd even like to do the cheesy thing where I get to introduce you as my girlfriend." Despite what Cass did to him....Caiti isn't Cass. And if the same thing happens, it would just prove that there is something wrong with him. But he can't just hurt over being cheated on forever, and Caiti does make him happy when they spend time together. So, why not?

She can't help the soft laugh that escapes her when he answers an affirmative so easily and so quickly and her eyes close in a slow blink as she smiles back at him when he kisses her forehead. It's easy to be around Dave. He doesn't make her feel like she has to keep him interested because he already is. He doesn't play games and, as far as she knows, he isn't seeing other people even though he could probably take his pick from thousands of fans.

"You wanna do that, huh? Aren't your fans going to be crushed?" she asks playfully, nudging her nose gently against his before giving him another chaste kiss.

Lynne had always struggled with falling asleep. For a long time, she thought it was just a normal thing people went through, but by the time she was in her early twenties and had boyfriends — and, eventually, The Asshole — to share a bed with, she'd realized that maybe it wasn't such a common occurrence. It wasn't something she was terribly good at hiding, so she'd been putting off actually staying the night with Steve, once things had progressed between them. But it had been a few months since she'd interrupted his press conference and they'd started tentatively dating to see if their marks meant they were romantic soulmates. They'd clicked almost immediately and Lynne, at least, was sure.

They'd been curled on the couch together, watching Netflix at her place and it had gotten late. She could tell he was tired even though she wasn't. It seemed like her mind just never stopped going. But, she didn't feel right sending him away and, anyway, maybe she'd sleep better if he was with her. Maybe that was what soulmates did for one another. So she'd asked him to stay.

...and now, it's an hour later and Steve's out like a light, but she's still laying there in his arms, bright-eyed and bushy-tailed. So, she carefully extracts herself and scoots to the other end of the bed, meaning to get up and go read in the living room so she doesn't wake him. As soon as she steps down, though, the floor creaks loudly and she freezes, peering over her shoulder to see if he's still sleeping before attempting to proceed.

Steve wasn't exactly the best sleeper himself. Between the serum that had made it so he really didn't need the same amount of sleep as most people, and his own issues that tended to plague him in the middle of the night when he was without a distraction to quiet him sleep was a tough one. It'd been a long week though, and in the comfort of being curled up on the couch with Lynne he'd found himself nodding off. He'd been hesitant to move forward into the whole spending the night thing, he tended to wake up in the panic of nightmares more often than not and it was something he didn't want to put on her - but he'd been half asleep when she offered and it seemed so much nicer in that moment to stay rather than leave.

He tends to run fairly hyper vigilant - a side efect of the PTSD diagnosis some SHIELD appointed therapist had given him the few times Fury managed to get him to actually go. So while he slept, he didn't really sleep, and the noise of Lynne moving out of the bed was more than enough to have him bolting up in the bed. For a moment there's the briefest of panic that crosses his face because this is not where he usually goes to sleep and he doesn't do well with that. It passes quickly though and he rubs a hand across his face as he remembers he's okay, he's somewhere he knows and somewhere he feels safe, and he most definitely has not woken up missing several decades again.

"Lynne?" he asks lightly, his voice slightly hoarse. "Hey, can't sleep?"

Guilt washes over her when Steve startles awake, because she can only imagine the things he's seen and lived through; if he doesn't have some level of PTSD, Lynne would honestly be shocked. So she feels bad that she's scared him, but he calms rather quickly and that's a plus, at least.

Since he's up, though, she sits back down at the edge of the bed and shakes her head. "No, not really..." she admits. "I always have trouble sleeping. I didn't mean to wake you up, I'm really sorry," she adds softly and she looks it when she says it.

"You can go back to sleep, Steve, it's fine...I was just gonna go out in the living room and read for a while and see if I couldn't trick myself into being tired again," Lynne explains, leaning closer to him and giving him a little kiss on the cheek.

He shakes his head when she starts to apologize - and he immediately feels bad that she is. It's not her fault he doesn't know how to sleep like a normal person. He's not exactly sure how this all works either - sharing a sleeping space with someone. Mostly because outside of nights in safe houses which is a whole other thing entirely, he's never actually done it.

He was sure about her, he was sure about this crazy soulmate mark thing - it had gone from she seems nice to something that somehow just felt right and he was okay with that. They still moved slow though, and he knew a lot of that was him. His schedule, his own inexperience in dating and women in general. So he looks a little lost in the moment as she tells him to go back to sleep and she'll be fine.

He gently tugs her in closer when she kisses his cheek and lets his lips brush against hers softly. He brushes some hair of her face and smiles a little. "Or you could go get your book and bring it bad to bed." He pauses. "I don't mind, Lynne."

Being dragged in closer for a real kiss, even chaste, makes Lynne smile back at him. There really was something to the whole soulmate mark thing; of all the people in the world to match, Captain America was a hell of a partner for the Universe to choose for her. He's attractive, sweet, and he cares so much about people. People he doesn't even know. Lynne loves that about him. He's like the antithesis of her ex-fiance, but then she supposes he would be, since The Asshole was...well, The Asshole and Steve's supposed to be her person forever.

A soft hum of amusement escapes her and Lynne leans in to steal another little kiss. "I could...but then I would be keeping you up with the light, wouldn't I?" she counters. Although, she really does have to admit that the offer is tempting. She'd rather be with him than alone, any time.

[Totes get it! And no hurries or anything :)]

It's been a long night. In fact, it's been one of those nights, the ones where everything that can go wrong has. So, it feels good to finally be off of her feet and on the couch. She hasn't quite made it out of her scrubs yet, but one step at a time, she supposes.

Leaning back, Melissa doesn't even realize she's starting to doze off. She didn't intend to fall asleep with her head thrown back, mouth hanging open, and everything....but when a person is exhausted, it can't be helped. It's not the crick in her neck that wakes her up, or even the fact that she's still fully clothed and not that comfortable. No, it's something else that jerks her awake....a scream.

Melissa doesn't think, she just acts, and she's off of the couch immediately and running up the stairs to the spare bedroom. She knows it's not Scott. Scott doesn't scream. Scott doesn't have night terrors. Scott doesn't really do this kind of thing, but Stiles.....Stiles does. Melissa isn't sure how she reached Stiles so quickly, but she reaches for his arms, holding onto him and giving him a gentle shake. "Stiles! Stiles! It's okay! You're okay, I've got you!"

She's not sure what else to say to the poor kid. She knows she can be there for him, but it breaks her heart sometimes.

He doesn't stop screaming right away. It takes a few seconds for his brain to process the fact that he's not alone, that he's awake, that someone is trying o subdue him. It takes another few seconds, even after he goes quiet, to realise that it's Scott's mom, it's Mrs McCall, and he is safe in her arms.

His entire body goes limp as a rag doll as the rigid fear leaves his muscles. His breathing is too hard, too fast, too loud. He tries to swallow it down, tries to force himself to take a deep breath. He's safe, now, and everything else was a dream.

He tilts his head to look at her, and he opens his mouth to say something, to thank her, but he can't manage it. He can't make his mouth work right to make the words. He lowers his gaze and tries again to focus on his breathing.
