Who: Amphitrite [Narrative]
What: Know thyself
When: Saturday afternoon
Where: An empty beach outside the city
Warnings: None
The new month was coming. The end of the year was fast approaching, and while Amphitrite did not care for the cold, she knew the cycle of the seasons would always play out the same way. So she bundled herself into long coats, boots, and scarves, shielding herself from the wind as best she could.
And that was how she set out in the afternoon, wrapped in layers against the chill. The afternoon was cold and grey, but that didn't matter. She wanted to go for a walk by the water, so that was what she was doing. She drove a short way outside the city, to a stretch of coast that she knew would be deserted until the spring. The waves were grey with large whitecaps, and she inhaled lungfuls of the cold, salt air. The quiet, peaceful air the place gave off was exactly what she needed right now.
She headed to the water, leaving strange looking impressions in the sand as it became more and more wet. She hadn't gotten to interact much with the sea directly since her awakening, and it was starting to wear on her. As the first wave rolled over her toes, something unlocked in her chest. It wasn't home, but it was. It wasn't Greece, but it didn't need to be. As long as the sea was close.
A gentle splash drew her attention back to the open expanse, and she laughed. The waves were dancing around her ankles, as though they knew she belonged there. "And hello to you too," she greeted them, crouching down and extending her fingers. A few droplets landed on her fingers, and she smiled, like a mother with her children.
"Did you miss me?" she asked quietly, placing one hand completely in the water. "Gods know I missed you. So much."
As she trailed her hand out of the water, a column rose in its wake. She twirled one finger and it turned into a spiral, stretching upward before collapsing in on itself. Even if she couldn't do much more than this, it cheered her to know her connection wasn't broken.
There was movement out of the corner of her eye, and she turned to see a crab, about the size of her palm, making its scuttling way toward her. She smiled, holding out her hand so that it could climb on if it so chose. It crossed the short distance and alighted on her hand, and she giggled at the ticklish sensation from its legs.
'Hello, my Queen,' it greeted her, its eyes flicking back and forth.
"Hello, dearest," she murmured, smoothing a finger over its bumpy shell. "It's good of you to come say hello. I didn't think I'd run into anyone here."
'I sensed your approach,' it told her. 'It is difficult to miss. And you have been missed.'
Amphitrite's face split into a wide smile, and she set herself down on the sand, heedless of the moisture soaking into her pants. "I've missed you too," she told the crab. "And all your kin, and the dolphins, and the great serpents, the sharks...everyone."
'The sea welcomes you, Lady,' the crab answered, curling its legs under itself and settling in her hand. 'After all. It is welcoming itself home.'
Amphitrite turned her head to look at the waves again. They had slowed to a gentle roll since she had sat down, as opposed to the crashing they had been doing before. She looked back at the crab, raising an eyebrow.
'The sea knows itself, Halosydna,' was all it said in reply, and Amphitrite threw her head back and laughed.
