It was frustrating — no, infuriating — that access to the hospital had been restricted to everyone except those with the needs and the funds to reach it. That wasn't how medicine was supposed to work, but in the world that they lived in it was a sad truth. Bureaucracies and money talked more than the actual healthcare of the individuals. Alejandro wanted to change that, but he wasn't a politician. He was a doctor that did the only other option available to him. He volunteered. He gave his time three times a week to the free clinic that had been set up in the slums, and twice a month on Saturdays he worked all day there. It was the most he could do without burning out in the process, and if he were honest he was damn close to doing just that. But he was careful to take time for himself when he needed it, and that usually came in the form of sleep. It was a commodity in his line of work, and he was running low. AJ arrived on-site an hour before the clinic was slated to open. He looked over charts, and the appointment list that was already on his desk. There were a few names he didn't recognize, but that didn't matter. While he enjoyed catching up with those he considered regular patients (to make sure they were taking care of themselves) he rather liked meeting new people. It was a good way to spread the word that the clinic was indeed free, and to encourage more patients to come in. Alejandro knew he wouldn't be able to treat or save every person that came into the exam room, but he would do his best. He had dedicated his life in the pursuit of helping people, not just the rich ones that lived in their ivory towers. The people needed care, and he intended to give it to them.
