Sam sort of smiled when she explained that she used her power to save someone from a fire, but it faded when she explained further. She'd been caught and someone else had taken the credit. Isn't that how it always went? Sam couldn't help but think, however, that there was more to it than that. The look on Claire's face told him that there was more to it than just having someone else take credit for her work. So he didn't comment on that right away. He figured he'd wait for the rest.
She explained that she was asked out by the popular, football player type of guy and something in Sam's gut told him that this wasn't going to end well (also, that he was jealous for some stupid, unknown reason). Mostly because Claire was a nice girl, and guys like that didn't treat nice girls...nicely. The whole 'desire to live normally' thing was killer. Apparently literally, because his suspicion was confirmed when she explained that he'd attacked her and killed her.
Sam knew that feeling too well; waking up when you're supposed to be dead. She explained that she had one potential 'kill spot' and Sam's stomach clenched a little, because the way she'd been talking like she was fearless and unable to die was sort of disproved right then. She explained further, however, that her kill spot wasn't actually a kill spot so much as a 'shut down' spot, and Sam raised an eyebrow. "Wow. So naturally, you were pretty freaked out."
