His brother was dead.
Gabriel was dead.
In truth, Castiel had never expected his brother to take a stand, and his misjudgement of his brother pained him. He was proud of Gabriel for what he had done, taking a stand and siding with Dean and Sam against Lucifer, but watching him die had been painful. It had shocked him to see the pain on Lucifer's face after it was done, and the sight of Gabriel's body, the ashen shadow that had been his wings proving it wasn't yet another trick, tore at something inside him. Human emotions were still new to him, for all that he had experienced an onslaught of them in the past months, and grief was becoming too common, too familiar. He didn't want to become used to this ache. He had grieved for Joanna and Ellen, for Anna, for his father who had abandoned them, and now for Gabriel, and he wanted an end to it. He missed the certainty that came when emotions were muted.
So Joanna's offer was welcome. In truth, she was the one part of this that made it all worthwhile. He stood outside the cabin, heedless of the rain, waiting for her. The weather suited his mood in some ways, and he let the sound of it fill his ears and drown out the rest of it, if only for a while. It didn't work so well as it once had. The rain didn't quite touch him, and he looked as unflappable as ever, his turmoil carefully hidden behind stoicism. Still, he hoped that Joanna arrived soon. He needed to get away from the thoughts in his head.
