Eddie knew she was there before she actually approached him. If there was anything in this world that he was, it was observant. He managed to pick up on things that no one else would have even noticed or would have brushed off as unimportant. It was why he was still alive. He could think of only two times that someone had gotten the jump on him, and he wasn't eager to add to that number.
He watched the way Laurie moved when she wasn't looking at him. It reminded him of her mother, and the smallest of smiles found it's way to his face, tinged with sadness. But by the time she made it to his table, his face was again blank of that possible softness. He looked up at Laurie as she sat down. God damn, she looked just like Sally. But he could see just a little of himself in there, too. This was a bad idea. Such a fucking bad idea. But he was here now, and so was she, and he wasn't going to just walk out on her. He could do a lot of really terrible things, but not walk out on his... on Sally's kid.
"Don't worry about it," he mumbled, taking another sip of his drink. "I ain't been here long."
He switched from his drink to his cigar, leaning back a little and considering what she'd just said. "All we did was fight a little crime together. No need to get all touchy-feely about it," he said after a moment with a shrug. Why should they have met together like this before? She didn't have any reason to... did she? Shit, did she know? No, no, that was impossible. Sally never would have told her. He didn't think, at least.
