Pike had been spending his time since finally showing up to the cabin trying to just keep his head down. Social situations hadn't been his thing since HelLA, or rather since his own actions there. People that knew him when would probably be pretty shocked at the man he'd become. Gone was the goofy rebel without a clue that Buffy had once known. In his place was a quiet, intense guy that was more than a little broody and severe.
He'd come to the cabin after Jo and the manager gave him the directions. He hadn't quite been prepared for Bella, truthfully. He remembered Cordelia's post, and the comments from other people, Bella being one of them. He couldn't help but notice the manager's sense of humor, sticking a guy with big anti-vamp issues with a girl that was clearly on the other side of that particular camp. Still, he was very good at hiding his emotions, and he was pretty sure no sign of the awkwardness showed. And she seemed like a nice girl, so it wasn't terribly hard for him to ignore it, in the long run.
He was coming down to the kitchen to grab a snack. While he could cook, he didn't really do much of it. No real motivation. Snack food ate just as well as a four star lasagna, and went a lot better with all the alcohol he drank. He was curious how long it would take his cabinmates to notice that he never seemed to get drunk, despite how frequently he whipped out his flask. He still hadn't thought of a good excuse that didn't involve just telling the truth.
Maybe that's why he didn't realize Bella was down there ahead of time. Usually he'd have been able to tell from the strength of her scent that she was around, the same way he could with other people. He'd actually managed to get about halfway into the kitchen before he noticed he wasn't alone in the kitchen. When he did, he turned his head, angling his face so that his scar wasn't quite as obvious. It was a thing he did until people got used to it, to prevent staring and any resultant angry outbursts. Pike didn't really react well to people staring at it. "Oh. Uh, hey." Yeah, surprise social situations weren't his strong suit. "You just eat dinner?"
Somewhere, there was a gimmicky comedian preparing a certain sign for him.
