Lily couldn't sleep. Hearing that so many people from her and her friends' pasts had been seen in the resort was keeping her eyes from being able to close. She thought about waking James, asleep in the bed beside her, but she didn't want her wandering mind to rob him of a good night's sleep. So instead, she quietly eased herself out of bed and she pulled on the jeans and emerald green blouse she had been wearing earlier in the day that she had tossed on the floor. She couldn't find her shoes in the dark and just didn't care to try to locate them, so she padded across the floor in bare feet, opening the door and slipping out of her room and down the hall until she reached the living area. She could just sit and watch the telly for awhile, but she simply felt too restless. The mild night air called to her and Lily let herself out of the cabin to take a walk.
Once outside, the witch tilted her head back and closed her eyes, taking in a deep breath of the fresh air. She felt better already. Maybe she was just claustrophobic. She wrapped her arms around herself and stared up at the stars. Already the memory of Severus as well as the threat of Bellatrix and Fenrir were fading. But as soon as she began to feel secure again, she heard someone behind her.
"Hello, Lily."
Her green eyes widened as she whirled around, reaching into her belt for her wand, but it wasn't there. She could imagine it, sitting in its usual place on her night table, but not with her, and she instantly regretted it. The boy with the pale skin and dark hair was standing there, three feet from her. But he wasn't the boy she knew from the school yard. He was an adult, the same as herself. "S-Severus?" she asked, her voice quiet and shaking. "What are you doing here?"
"I had to tell you. You needed to know how much I love you."
"You called me a mudblood. You joined with Voldemort. How is that love?"
"All mistakes. I was hurt. You wouldn't forgive me. No matter how much I asked, no matter what I did, you wouldn't forgive me."
"It was unforgivable." But Lily's voice was beginning to waver. Her eyes were shining with tears that threatened to spill over. She tried to convince herself that it wasn't real, but Severus was standing right in front of her. It was too hard. It had to be real.
"You don't mean that."
She sniffled, looking at the ground and shuffling her feet. Maybe she did and maybe she didn't. She had imagined this meeting a thousand times, all the things she would say to Severus Snape if she ever saw him again. But it wasn't going as she had planned at all.
"Do you know what I did?" he said suddenly, snapping Lily from her thoughts. Her eyes met his and Snape began to walk in a small circle around her, almost touching her but not quite. "I betrayed you. It was my fault that the Dark Lord found you and James." Lily opened her mouth to speak, to scream, but Severus continued before she could. "I revealed the prophecy to him in exchange for your life. He promised me that you would be safe and that I could have you. You would be mine." With this, he ran his fingers under Lily's jaw, tilting her face up to his. Lily was shaking with rage and fear.
"I love you, Lily Evans."
"I married James! I love James! I had a son with James!" she screamed, her fingers curling into fists at her sides. "A son that you condemned to death!"
But Severus was unfazed by her outburst. He simply smirked and chuckled deep in his throat. "It will always be me, Lily. In your heart, you know this. It was only anger at me that drew you to James. Given time, you would have been happier with me."
"No. No I wouldn't have." She shook her head defiantly, the tears finally running down her cheeks. But Severus was unconvinced. He moved in close, whispering to her over and over about his undying love, about the love she obviously harbored for him, and about how he was going to kill James just to prove it to her. Would kill Harry if he needed. Lily would be his, whether by choice or by force.
Even after the ghost of Severus disappeared, leaving her alone, Lily stayed curled up against the outside wall of the cabin, hands clamped over her ears to block out his lies and his threats.
