Judas stared at Sam blankly for a second. It clicked then, what he had to do to fix this. He didn't like it, but there was not a single doubt in his mind that he would do it, which he felt was a decent gauge of the rightness of the thing. It also was a pretty good gauge of how much he really did care about Faith. What astounded him, and what caused the blank look, was that it was so simple. Sometimes, just maybe, the best fixes weren't all that complicated at all.
Something changed in his gaze now that he knew what he had to do. He studied Sam in a new light, and after a moment, he said, "You didn't lose, Sam. Victory often does cost more than you wish it to, but in the end, you didn't lose." And Judas would know quite a bit about losing in a struggle against destiny, after all. What he was trying to do was thank Sam without actually saying the words, because it wasn't really easy for Judas to say them and mean them. But he did, and the fact that he was trying to provide some kind of bizarre, small comfort was the best way he knew how to say it.
