Maybe she was right, at least, for a little while. Father was not here, after all... and, maybe since he was not, and since Gwen knew him, it might be worth asking a question? But, Arthur hesitated... he knew he was not supposed to ask.
Gwen had a really nice laugh, and was even prettier when she smiled; and he got a little embarrassed when she kissed his head. Nurse did that sometimes, and Father did it at bedtime each night, but nobody else. He grinned at what she said to him. "Nurse says the kingdom is in trouble when I'm older because I'm so handsome..." His grin faltered as he pondered that, not for the first time. "But, that makes no sense. I can still be a good king if I am handsome, can't I?" He felt like Gwen would be honest with him if he asked her something.
And that sense gave him the courage to ask what he was not supposed to. "If you know my father... did you--" He looked around to make sure this was not a trick, then leaned in to whisper, "Did you know my mother?"
