Elijah could understand why she had done what she had. He did not, however, accept the way in which she had handled her affairs. If they had come to him with a viable solution, he would have been reasonable—as he had been reasonable when he had offered his protection. This was between her and Klaus, and him and Klaus. The others need not be involved. She had no grand plan to dispatch Klaus. She simply chose to renege out of their deal for self-preservation. To someone who was intimately familiar with the wisdom of the brain, but not of the heart, there was nothing noble or redeeming in that. Either way, Klaus gets what he wants, as he always did. It was only a question of if she took those she claimed to love with her.
Perhaps the world could be a better place if everyone was open with how they felt, but an Original did not often explain themselves. Why should they? "I promised to keep them safe, not to gratify their insolence," he said. The smile had lost its edge, replaced by cool contempt. There were different levels of trust, and trust was a necessary and two-way component of a contract. His policy was fair, but strict. Reasonable, but never compliant. That was him. He gave the benefit of his trust to those who deserved it. One chance, was all they ever had. Trust, once betrayed, could never be restored. Not with him. Not many who had tested that theory, lived to regret it. He had broken that code with her and now she lay the blame at his feet. Perhaps he was the bigger fool for thinking that an alliance, however expedient, could be forged between them in spite of their past. "You forfeited your privileges the moment you offered to renegotiate with dishonest intentions."
"I came to see if we could reach an agreement. But those who fail to recognise the errors of the past are prone to repeat them," he reflected. "I would not be comfortable associating myself with someone in that condition. Why should I not kill you, here, after all?"
Would she try to bargain with him? If so, with what? Reason with him? Threaten him yet again, revealing what other perils awaited in this place?
