It all came down to one thing: Adam Milligan – or Winchester as he caught himself introducing himself more and more often – had always been on his own. From his early childhood there hadn't been any one there to rely on since his mother had been forced to work all night and (almost) all day just to earn enough money to make sure they got by. He put himself to sleep on his own, cooked his own dinners, dressed his wounds by himself and the monster lurking beneath his bed? Adam had had to deal with that one on his own as well.
Now, years later, Adam surprisingly found himself part of a family. However, knowing that he had two older brothers who were capable of taking on pretty much anything heaven and hell were willing to throw at them, didn't change a thing. Adam refused to turn into "that little brother" who would hide behind Sam and Dean when things got rough.
And that was where Mr. Alaric Saltzman came in.
Adam leaned back against the wall of the cabin and enjoyed the warm rays of the afternoon sunshine on his face as he waited for the older man. Saltzman, a man coming from a completely different world, had a profound knowledge of the supernatural and vampires in particular. A knowledge he was willing to share with Adam who had learned the value of being prepared the hard way.
They decided to meet at the cabin Adam inhabited as to avoid Alaric's ex-wife, the vampire Isobel. So by the time they'd agreed on Adam found himself just outside, blinking into the sunlight and playing impatiently with the pencil and notebook he'd brought. Phase one of "how not to be a victim" was about to start any moment now.
