The frown stayed on Jeremy's face as she backed off, withdrawing into herself. This wasn't the Vicki he knew. His Vicki had been funny and bubbly and... a little bit whiney. But he'd been completely in love with her. He thought he still might be, a little bit. He didn't feel like he had before, but maybe that was because he knew he wasn't dependant on her any more. He had grown into his own role.
Chewing his lip, Jeremy watched her. "Can I, er, come in?" he asked awkwardly. So she'd kissed him, and he'd kissed her back, but that didn't mean she didn't want to slam the door in his face. The first thing he'd stupidly done was offer her hope, then drag it away again. He could have kicked himself for being so stupid. But there was no denying how much he had loved every moment of that kiss. Or how he wished he could do it again, right now.
