Pike wasn't angry. He stood there with one hand on the door. Finally he looked down at his feet and shook his head. "I'm not the man you think I am, Heather." He shook his head again, then glanced back up at her. "You don't have anything to apologize for. You just stumbled onto one of my many issues." The fact that he didn't continue with that thought probably made it pretty clear that that was all she was going to get on that one.
If it wasn't clear then, it was clear when he changed the subject. "So how'd that sleep go?" One eyebrow rose in question. She'd done a good job, but he also knew her type. If she thought people needed it, she'd work herself until she passed out. And this was a far safer topic of conversation than his issues, which he wouldn't be discussing with anyone.
