The funeral for Odette had been lovely, but Cassius still wished it weren't happening. He hadn't been close to the girl or anything, but he could see that Xavier was hurting. He'd worried for his friend, but when Xavier disappeared he knew it was time to go. He approached Astrea and touched her elbow gently, the signal that it was time to go. They'd developed this early on as a sign that one of them was ready to get the hell out of a particular social event. It had worked wonders thus far and seemed to work well today. They said their goodbyes and apparated home. Cassius knew that Xavier likely blamed his children for this. It was hard not to. With the havoc they had wrought on the Ministry and the villages after that, Rabastan, Rodolphus, and Bellatrix were easy scapegoats. Perhaps they were at fault for it in their own way, but he knew none of them had been the ones to cast the spell. The thought weighed heavily enough on Cassius' mind, but they weren't thoughts he was going to share with his friend. Xavier wasn't ready for logic, he knew that much. As they returned home, Cassius shed his cloak and sent a house elf away with it as he undid the cuffs on his shirt. He glanced sidelong at his wife, usually able to decipher her mood, but finding himself unable to in the moment. Perhaps it was the stress of the day or perhaps she was feeling a myriad of emotions all at once, but Cassius couldn't figure out which it was. He rolled his sleeves up then moved to help her remove her own cloak. "What's wrong?" he asked her, his hands trailing down to her waist as the house elf made off with her cloak. A ridiculous question, certainly. The funeral was enough to sour a mood, but it was more than that, and Cassius wasn't about to just chalk it up to funeral blues. |
