Knowing that Cate had also been miserable would not have helped Edgar much. He knew it wasn't fun for her either, so why he didn't just assume she was miserable was beyond him, but he saw her face and knew immediately that she'd been feeling exactly the same way he did. He'd been hiding out in the shed, mostly to stay out of her way, but that meant he hadn't seen much of her. If he had he might have apologized sooner, so maybe he should have.
When she spoke, he reached out immediately, wrapping his arms around her and burying his face in her neck, trying not to cry himself. He didn't know why, but he needed to be strong. For her, for the kids, and for himself. There were a lot of reasons that Edgar tried not to cry, and maybe it was ego or pride. He had a lot of both, but in moments like this he put them both aside so he could just hold her without either getting in the way.
"I'm sorry," he said. "I'm so sorry." He pulled back so he could look at her, brushing her hair away from her face. "I never want to hurt you like this and I'm sorry that I did. I never should have..." He trailed off and took a deep, ragged breath.
He had gone home expecting to stick to his need for an apology and to explain himself, but he found that when confronted with her like this all he wanted to do was hold her and tell her how sorry he was that he'd betrayed her trust. Yes, he had needed her during the funeral and it hurt that he didn't have that. In fact, it might have made everything worse, but like hell he was going to say that now.
"I love you," he said. "I don't know if you can believe me, but I will work to prove that I will never keep things from you again."
