Juneteenth was not recognized as a state holiday in Texas until 1980 or as a federal holiday in the United States until 2021, but June 19th was already being celebrated as Emancipation Day among members of the struggle in Texas as far back as 1900. It was an important day during the Civil Rights movement with hundreds of thousands celebrating in Dallas. It was also the day in 1962 that I married my husband Ray.
