Once Johnny was in bed, Jacob came back into the bedroom he and Liz had been sharing. It had been nice staying together, and he'd really grown fond of this family idea. Johnny wasn't that bad, and not explosive. Children weren't bad. Being loved wasn't bad. Jacob really wondered what scared him away from the notion so much when he was younger, and then he remembered. College.
Once in the bedroom, he smiled at Liz. He'd been doing everything he could to make her pregnancy easier. So far, he hadn't heard anything from Jimmy, and was under the impression that maybe his twin brother got sent back home. He felt bad that if this were the case, Johnny would never really be able to spend any time with him. But in a way, Jacob was okay with this. He wanted to take the place of Jimmy, in a way. Accept Johnny as his own. Not only because the boy needed a father, but because Jacob wanted to be there. He wanted a Johnny to be his son, and he wanted Liz to be his wife. He wanted this family.
And with Liz, everything just felt right for him. She was smart, strong, brave. Everything he was. And she wouldn't get hurt because she knew what was out there. And that was why tonight, of all nights, Jacob chose to ask the biggest question he'd ever ask in his life.
Shifting slightly, Jacob reached into his pants pocket and cleared his throat. "Liz?" He asked, looking at her before glancing down for a moment. He looked a little distressed, and his voice had cracked slightly. Was he really that nervous? What if she said no? God, she was having his children. Twins! Would she really turn him down? His heart was pounding in his ears.
He got down on one knee, and pulled the little box from his pocket and opened it up, holding it out to show her the ring with a heart in the center, and two diamonds on the side. Staring up at her with blue eyes, he swallowed hard.
"Will you marry me?" His voice almost came out a whisper as he waited for her reply. He was tempted to start counting the seconds, but he was sure he would be inaccurate because it felt like time was holding still and flying at the same time.
He just hoped the shock wouldn't send her straight into labor.
