WHO: Michael Corner & Sally-Anne Perks
WHAT: Random encounters are fun!
WHERE: Corridor
WHEN: Thursday afternoon
RATING: PG
STATUS: Pending

Michael Corner had always been a bit of a social butterfly and despite a war, little had changed. He remained relatively unaffected outwardly even though his mind, in its still moments, would remind him of the screams, cries, and smells of death. It wasn't a cheery topic and Michael almost felt guilty complaining since others had been affected, in his opinion, so much worse. He hadn't lost anyone, his family wasn't plagued by the Ministry, his friends were still his friends...

Nonetheless, Michael didn't look his normal self when he emerged from his last class of the day. It had either been more boring than usual or he just needed more sleep, but, either way, he had barely kept his eyes open and when they dared to flutter close, he remembered the sights and sounds of the Final Battle. It wasn't something Michael would tell anyone though some of the blokes in his dorm might have noticed his restless nights. Yet, lack of sleep caught up that day and he definitely didn't look his Sunday best. He stumbled out of class, dropping his books everywhere. "Bollocks!" He crouched to grab them, hoping no professors heard.

Still feeling a bit under the weather, Sally-Anne Perks had decided not to attend classes that day. In fact, she'd all but decided not to leave her dormitory for the entirety of the day, but then she'd grown restless and despite Theodore's promise to bring her assignments, Sally-Anne decided she may as well go speak to her professors personally. Classes had just ended, and she was in no hurry to get where she was going, so she walked slowly through the halls as students poured out of classrooms. She stopped short seeing someone stumble out of one of the classrooms, dropping all his books.

If she were more compassionate, Sally-Anne would have rushed forward to help him pick them up. As it were, she wasn't, and she took a few steps toward him but made no effort to lend assistance. Instead, she studied his appearance, trying to discern just exactly who he was. His face was familiar, as she'd seen it in various classes over the years but she couldn't recall his name, or even his house. Certainly he was no Slytherin, and she was nearly positive he wasn't a Gryffindor. In any case, it wasn't very important. What caught her attention most was the fact that he looked a little worn around the edges, as if something were keeping him from resting properly.

Glancing around, Sally-Anne assessed who was in the halls before she sidled up to the boy. She had the sudden urge to speak to him, which she blamed entirely on the fact that she'd been cooped up in her room with only her cat for company the entire day. However, once she was close enough to him that she could speak, Sally-Anne found that she wasn't entirely sure what to say. Feeling suddenly awkward, not liking the feeling the at all, she resorted to being a bit cruel and before she even knew what she was saying, she sneered, "You must be a Hufflepuff. Only a badger could be so clumsy."

The seconds the words were out of her mouth she realized she could be wrong. He could be in Ravenclaw, or even Gryffindor. Then the insult would just make her look daft. But over the years Sally-Anne had learned that even if you your insults were misdirected and didn't quite fit the situation, if you just acted indifferent you could generally get away with it. That, or you could just rectify the remark, setting the intended insult on the right path. All it took was the right attitude, and Sally-Anne crossed her arms over her chest looking at the boy in a condescending way.

Michael managed to side-step several pairs of feet though he did wonder when lending a helping hand became a foreign concept. Grabbing for his last book, he barely escaped his hand getting squashed under a particularly large foot. "Oy, mate, I need that for Quidditch!" He called after the boy who just kept walking. Disgruntled, he pulled himself up and hearing Lani's words, narrowed his eyes. He didn't know her very well, obviously, but he did know her name at least. "Actually, I'm in Ravenclaw, Sally-Anne Perks. Though I'll make sure to tell our Head Boy about your concern for his House's motor skills."

Sally-Anne glared at him, pursing her lips slightly. So maybe it was a little wrong that she lumped Hufflepuffs together as being clumsy, but lately she hadn't been feeling in the mood to be kind about things.

"Who said anything about concern?" Sally-Anne asked in an off-hand sort of way, as though she were already entirely bored of the conversation. Though, insulting Ernie wasn't exactly high on her list of things to do. She actually liked him, and truth be told, she didn't really find Hufflepuffs to be the same as she had in previous years. That comment of the boy's, whose name she still didn't know, made her rethink her attitude a little at the moment.

Then, her nose wrinkled slightly at the use of her full name. There was no way she would correct him by saying her name was Lani, but she hated being called Sally-Anne. "It's Sally, thank you," she said trying to tone it down the rudeness a little. It didn't help much. "What was your name again?"

Michael was one of the friendly until given reason not to be types. And at the moment? He found very little reason to like the girl who didn't even know his name. Truthfully, his pride was hurt more than her attempts at insults. Michael hated being overlooked --- with family, friends, Quidditch...it didn't matter. "Michael Corner," he replied tersely. "I'd say pleased to meet you, but..." He smiled an over sweet smile and waved his hand to indicate the whole past incident.

Sally-Anne nodded her head once. "Yes, that's right. You're Michael," she said remembering the times she'd heard his name said aloud. The way she said his name made it sound as if it were a word she didn't like, but really she was a bit indifferent. Other than thinking Michael might be a bit clumsy, she really had no other opinion of him, except that he wasn't altogether bad on the eyes. Her head tipped to the side a little as she asked, "Do you ever go by anything other than Michael? I hate formal sounding names."

He didn't know if he was reading too much into how she said his name since he was already aggravated and so let it slide, hoping it was just imagination. "Well, with mates, sure." He raised his eyebrows, smirking a bit, clearly indicating she had the choice to where she fell on that spectrum.

Not really in the mood to make friends, but still feeling a little embarassed about the entire situation, Sally-Anne didn't say anything for a second. She just watched Michael, her face blank. Then she gave a slight smile, one that seemed a bit forced. It was true that she wasn't his mate at the moment, but it would probably be a good idea for her to try to at least make more friends outside of the ones she already had. Perhaps it would happen in time. With a sigh, Sally-Anne said, "Well, alright then Michael." There was another pause as Sally-Anne looked Michael over again.

"Do you normally drop books like that, or is today a good day?" Sally-Anne asked, though her words were completely lacking her usual bite.

He actually grinned at that. "You want to be a Michael caller then? Shame. So happens I make a brilliant mate." He rolled his eyes over the question and shrugged. "I got trampled. I blame the chocolate tarts at lunch."
