Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend!  Next Entry
Who: Neville and Ginny
What: After her fight with Millicent, Ginny needs her boo boos kissed some patching up
When: After the fight
Where: Gryffindor 7th year boys dorm
Rating: Somewhere around a PG-13, but I doubt it

Neville hadn't stopped to really think as he rushed around, getting all the ingredients together for a healing herbal poultice like Professor Sprout had taught him. Apparently after several falls, cuts, bruises, and of course, the infamous tackling his first year, the kindly stout professor had thought Neville might want to learn to take care of himself rather than running to Madam Pomfrey every few minutes. Once he started growing his own herbs, the process went even more smoothly.

Combining everything he needed into a clean compress, Neville pulled out his wand and focused, eventually casting the heating charm that would help inflammation. Most people relied on ice, but not with this. That and the soothing herbs he'd chosen would have much more of an effect if they were warmed so their fragrances could be released.

Satisfied with his work, and hoping it would help Ginny to feel at least a little bit better, he was just tucking his wand back into his pocket when he heard the door crack open. "Come on in," he called, knowing Seamus or Ron or anyone else would've just barged right in. Six and a half years living with the same four boys didn't leave you a lot of room for privacy.

Ginny was still rather in shock about the whole ordeal. She was practically seething while she was writing that journal entry, though she had calmed down a bit by now. At least she was speaking in coherent sentences now.

She felt vaguely guilty about Neville making her something for her bruises, but at the same time, she was glad to be rid of them soon. She didn't want to go to Pomfrey for it because at this point it was simply her word against Bulstrode's and well, with those odds, it was likely they'd both end up in detention.

Making her way through the common room, she pretended not to notice the stares and whispering that followed her all the way to the boys' staircase. Well that was bloody brilliant. At least the bruises would be gone soon.

Ginny opened the door when she heard Neville call to her and gave a quick look around. A small sigh of relief passed her lips when she realized that her brother wasn't there. He didn't need to see her like this. It was honestly not as bad as it looked. Though it did look pretty bad.

"'Lo, Nev." She said softly, making her way over to his bed and giving a small smile. "I promise it's not as bad as it looks." She preempted before he could say anything.

Oh, Merlin. She could deny it if she wanted to, but the colours developing around her eye showed a different story. For a moment, Neville simply gaped. Then, recovering his senses, he found his sense of speech and gasped, "Ginny! What the he-- What did she do to you?"

Maybe it was better than it looked, but it looked completely awful. It looked so bad he wasn't entirely sure the compress would help, not completely. His skills might not have been that good. Sure, he'd been growing most of those herbs specifically for their healing properties, but he'd never had to put them up against something so....well, obvious before.

Too late to back out, by then. And he wouldn't. If there was even a chance he could help, he would try.

Ginny let out a small sigh and shook her head. "I don't even bloody well know. I was just walking and then..." Scowling she chewed on her lip for a short moment. "Stupid cow is going to pay for it." Gingerly, she brushed her fingers over her bruise and tried her best not to wince as she did so.

"So what's the verdict, doctor?" She asked, attempting a joke in light of her situation. Something needed to lighten the mood.

Something to lighten the mood was necessary. Very necessary. Neville was not prone to violent urges, but the sight of Ginny hurt and in pain made him furious. Especially when she'd done nothing to provoke it. He knew Ginny wasn't always innocent when it came to insulting certain people, but for her to just be minding her own business and getting hit for it?

"Well..." he began slowly, "let's take a look." Ever so gently he took Ginny's chin in his hand, inspecting her eye carefully. Under the circumstances, he could almost ignore the closeness and the fact that her normally bright eyes looked a bit duller. "It looks okay," he admitted. "I don't think she caused any permanent damage." He sighed a little. "Of course, I really wish you'd just go ahead and see Madam Pomfrey."

Ginny could see it in his eyes that he was upset by her injury and felt a bit more guilty that she'd come up here at all. He certainly didn't need to take care of her and yet here she was. Still, there was something pulling at her as his fingers brushed her chin lifting her head. The corners of her mouth tugged slightly upwards and she found herself holding her breath.

"I'd be in detention for a week for fighting. Can't miss that much practice before a match." She said turning her head slightly. "Besides, I know at least you won't tell my Mum about all this. That's about the last thing I need."

When she turned away, Neville felt the familiar feeling of rejection drop in his stomach. Stifling his sigh, he pulled away, nodding for her to take a seat. "Well, can't have the most brilliant chaser of the team out for such an important part of the season, can I?" he said, smiling a little.

He ought to tell her mum. Someone ought to. Merlin, someone ought to tell the Headmistress. This was complete bollocks was what it was. Bulstrode was deranged, she had to be. Someone should put a stop to it. And that someone shouldn't be Ginny. "Here," he said quietly, placing the pack as gently as he could over her eye. "It probably won't take it all away, but it ought to at least stop it from hurting and maybe make the colour a little better." And the lavender would help calm her, which he had a feeling she really could use.

Ginny smiled at that and shook her head. Despite herself she could feel her cheeks growing warm. "I'm hardly the best on the team." She said with a small laugh. "But thanks." She added after a quick moment.

Taking a seat on his bed, she tilted her head back so she could look up at him, taking an almost bracing breath. Even though she could tell he was trying his best to be gentle, she couldn't stop the wince that happened. It was surpisingly warm, she wasn't expecting that, but it was soothing and instantly stopped the throbbing that had been occuring. She visibly relaxed, reaching up to hold the pack, brushing Neville's hand slightly.

Neville nearly panicked at the slight touch, which was stupid considering how many times they'd hugged, held hands, and so many other little ways of showing affection. But ever since his talk with Hermione, he'd been more jittery around Ginny, and now, so close and so very alone, in his room of all places, he felt more than a little awkward. He nearly dropped his hold on the poultice as he jerked his hand away anxiously. If she hadn't already been holding it, he might have stabbed her in the eye or something equally horrible.

"Any better?" he asked, turning away to put the extra ingredients away. The better for her not to see his hands shaking.

Ginny was surprised by his sudden jerk backwards, but didn't say anything. She was mostly trying not to think about the feeling of disappointment that shot through her when he did so. Instead she shifted slightly on the bed and took a few deep breaths, inhaling the scent of the herbs.

"Loads." She said softly, watching him busy himself. The conversation she'd had with Hermione flashed through her mind, but she pushed it away. Her friend never had gotten back to her on that front, and so the redhead could only assume that she was being spared the bad news. It was just as well, wasn't it? He was leaving in June anyhow. Besides, they were best mates. It was silly to think he'd ever see her as something more.

"You really are brilliant, you know that, yeah?" She said with a small smile, not really caring just how many times she'd said that to him before. It was probably begining to sound a bit old. Still, it was just as true in that moment as it had been when she'd first said it.

As they usually did when she said those exact words, the tips of Neville's ears turned pink. Glancing over his shoulder, he smiled shyly at her and shrugged before returning to the task of tidying his living area. "Not that brilliant," he mumbled, not even entirely sure she'd have heard him. "Nothing any friend wouldn't do." Friend. Because that's all they were, right? All they were ever going to be.

Biting his lower lip, he turned back to face her. "I ought to have her head for what she did. Bulstrode, I mean." Anything to get the subject off of him. He wasn't entirely sure he could handle being complimented just then.

"Are too." Ginny mumbled back. She had heard him. But only because she was listening closely for him to say something in retalliation. And once again she felt a slight bit of disappointment when he used the word friend. "And seeing as you're the one patching me up and not anyone else, I'd say it takes a pretty special friend."

She scowled when he turned back to her. Not because of what he said. Actually, that bit made her feel a small twinge, feeling lucky that she had someone who'd offer to take the head of someone who hurt her. "I plan on taking care of it. Mental bint won't just get away with that sort of display." There was a sort of edge to her voice that only came out when she was truly livid.

Her special friend? Oi, if that didn't make him feel completely mental. Though he'd heard the jokes whispered around, usually about himself or Luna, he had sort of hoped to forget it. He knew she meant nothing of the sort by her wording, though. So instead, he just smiled and shrugged.

But when she spoke up again, Neville gave her an almost horrified look. "Don't, Ginny," he said, pleading desperately. "Don't even... I mean, you can't. I know you can take care of yourself, but Ginny, you can't. You'll get in trouble, you could get hurt, I can't..." What he was going to say was he couldn't imagine what he'd do if she faced off with someone as obviously unstable as Millicent Bulstrode. What if she started throwing curses around that none of them was set to deal with? Well--no that wasn't true. The DA had prepared them to deal with such curses. And he'd seen her throw off some brilliant ones at the Ministry. But his heart had been in his chest the entire time and he was terrified to see her face it again.

"And what? Just let her get away with this?" She was equally as horrified as he was. "What if next time she socks a third year? Or a first year? Or someone who can't even pretend to put up a fight? What then?" Scowling she let out a huffy sigh. This of course, made her eye sting slightly, but she ignored it. The herbs were helping significantly, but didn't much allow for muscle movement. "I at least can take care of myself. I know what I'm doing."

So that was a fib, but the truth wasn't exactly something she was prepared to admit. And the truth was, she felt weak. She was a strong, intellegent girl and yet she couldn't put up a fight against Bulstrode. That was a bruise to her egot they didn't have herbs for.

Despite how nervous he might have been for himself, he was even more worried about her. Taking a breath, Neville moved to sit by her side, playing idly with his hands in his lap. "I don't want anything to happen to you, Ginny," he finally said a moment later. "I... I know you get annoyed when people worry about you, but I do. And no, I don't want her off hurting other people. But she's outright admitted she hit you and where anyone could read it. The professors are bound to see."

Glancing sideways at her, he gave a tiny smile. "I know you can take care of yourself. I've always known that. But that doesn't mean I want you to."

Ginny pulled a face but didn't say anything for a long moment. She knew that Neville cared about her and she wanted to be able to tell him that she would listen and be good, but she simply wasn't built that way. She just couldn't let Bulstrode make a fool of her like that. It wasn't how she operated.

"I know you worry.' She said finally. "I wish you wouldn't," she added quickly with a sigh. "But I know you do anyhow because you're Neville and I s'pose I do have a tendency..." she trailed off for a moment before shaking her head. "But I'm not letting this go. She's not getting to me like that. I won't let it happen."

He knew she'd say that. He knew because he knew her. But that didn't mean he had to like it, and Neville pulled a face of his own. "Please, Ginny," he said, knowing his last ditch effort would be mostly wasted. "You're so much smarter than that. I don't want her getting away with it, but I don't want you getting in trouble. You know what your mum would say, and you've only one more year to go." Fighting was a serious offense, everyone knew that. If you got caught, that was.

"You just want to give me gray hairs," he accused, trying to lighten the mood in the room. He wasn't sure how he'd handle it if anyone hurt her again. It'd been such a long time worrying about everyone with the war. And now she was sitting beside him, so obviously hurt. He couldn't handle it, he really didn't think he could.

He'd pulled the mum card. Well that was brilliant. Now she felt vaguely guilty all over again. She hadn't been planning on telling her mum any of this and of course, if she did get caught getting back at the stupid cow, her Mum would be the first to hear about it. Bollocks. "You and your logic." She muttered, mostly to herself. That of course, didn't mean she was simply going to let Bulstrode get away with this. It just meant she was going to have to be a bit more discreet than socking her in the middle of the corridor. Perhaps she could commission the twins to help her out with a few supplies...

"O'course." Ginny teased lightly. "S'what I live for, y'know." She let her head fall against his shoulder, glad to have him there whether or not he was trying to disuade her from getting her revenge. He was her support and her rock. She needed him around. "What m'I supposed to do next year when you're not around to talk me out of these things? Hmm?"

Oi, he shouldn't. He really, really shouldn't. But she was there, and she was leaning all sweet like against him, and Neville didn't stop himself from resting his head on top of hers, breathing in that flowery scent of her hair. "Send owls," he said simply, as if that could possibly take the place of being there, nestled against her like this. "And it's not as if there's not Hogsmeade weekends. We can meet up then."

He hoped he sounded stronger than he felt. Because Neville was feeling anything but strong just then. In fact, he was feeling pretty terrible. "Besides," he added quickly, "you've got Colin and Demelza, and Luna of course. You'll barely miss me."

She wasn't entirely sure if it was being there with him, or the calming effect the herbs seemed to have on her, but either way she found herself eased quite a bit. Even with the small pit of fear at the thought of being without him in a few months time, she was feeling right at home sitting there. "That's not nearly the same." She murmured to herself.

This was of course true. It wasn't as though all of her mates were seventh years. She wouldn't be entirely alone. But she hated lumping Neville in with everyone like that. Sure she adored Cols and Demelza and Luna each in their own quirky way, Neville was...well Neville. He assured her that everything was going to be alright. He picked her up and brushed her off and gave her special herbs for her bruises.

"I think you underestimate how much I need you." The words were out of her mouth before she could stop them and now all she wanted to do was suck them back in again. She felt her cheeks growing hot again and lifted her head from his shoulder and turned away slightly so he wouldn't be able to see how well her face was matching her hair. Oh buggering hell.

Merlin, he'd give anything for her to mean that. Not just as Neville, the best mate who'd always been there for her, but really and truly mean that. For her to need him just as much as he needed her. Neville pulled away, getting to his feet and twisting his hands behind his back.

"I... Well.." And so the stuttering began. "It's not like I don't need you just as much, you know," he reminded her, avoiding her eyes. "I mean, you'll at least be here, surrounded by people. I'll be off...out there, you know?" Alone. Ugh, what a terrifying and lonely thought. "I just don't want..." He didn't want to be without her. He didn't want to leave her without her knowing how he felt. Or did he?

"Let's take a look at that," he said quickly, moving a bit closer, ignoring the flush in his own cheeks as he gently pried the heat pack away from her eye to check the progress. The swelling had gone down considerably, and the heat had done its job drawing out the bruising. "That's a little better," he commented, gently running a finger along the edge of the bruise.

Ginny thought about that for a brief moment. "Don't want what?" She pressed, but he was already moving towards her to check the compress.

She dropped the hand that had been holding it in place and tried to sit as still as she could manage while he examined her eye. Idly, her fingers began twisting in the ends of her hair while she waited for his verdict.

"It feels loads better." She remarked, head still tilted back to look up at him. She didn't wince this time as his hand breathed across the bruise, though she could feel her cheeks heating up. "Does't feel as puffy. How's the colour?" She asked, hoping it wasn't anything a small glamour charm wouldn't fix straight away.

Smiling a little, he nodded. "Better. Much better. You can still tell, though..." His face clouded over a bit, his anger at Millicent still radiating. It'd have been one thing if Ginny had been teasing her, or had at least known it was coming. He'd still be mad, but at least it would've made sense. This? Made little sense at all.

"You can probably cover it up, though," he said, realising how close he was to her. How her face was practically in his hand. He really ought to walk away again. But...he didn't feel much like it. Swallowing hard, he continued anyway. "Tonks can show you how, I'll bet. Or Hermione.

His hand dropped only slightly, resting against her cheek. As many times as he'd hugged her, he couldn't remember ever being quite this close to her. "Ginny, I--" Hermione telling him to talk it out with her rang in his head yet again. "I..." 'Was wondering if you could ever maybe possibly fancy me?' What sort of a question was that? "I'm glad you're feeling better," he finally stammered, his face turning pink again.

Ginny relaxed a bit and gave a small smile. "Brills, then." She said softly. He was still upset, and she didn't blame him in the slightest for it, but she was feeling much better. Both physically and emotionally. She wondered if that had something to do with the compress as well.

"Really? That's ace. M'sure even a glamour charm will be better than walking around with this." She added with a small smile.

It wasn't until his hand dropped to rest against her cheek that she realized just how close he was, and had been for the last long moment. Her cheeks were growing ever pinker and she could swear her heart was pounding outside of her chest. "Yeah, Neville?" She asked at almost a whisper as he stammered slightly. This was it. She'd been wrong. He did fancy her and he was going to tell her and...

"Oh. Thanks, Nev." She said as soon as his words registered. Well that had been a daft way of thinking. Of course he wasn't going to confess deep-seeded feelings. Still, she could've sworn she saw something in his eyes...

His hand dropped instantly to his side, horrified by what he'd just done. Touching her, especially so close, had to be a no-no. Merlin, Merlin, Merlin was he an idiot. Here she was, in pain and sore and probably still all fumed up over stupid stupid Millicent and he was going to attempt to make their entire friendship come skidding to a halt.

Swallowing hard, Neville attempted to calm his racing heart, wiping clammy palms against his pants to try and get feeling back into them. What an idiot. What a complete and utter idiot. "Yeah... Well, you can keep that with you. Warm it up if it starts swelling again or anything. I mean, it probably will at least once or twice more before it fades completely and all, it's not really a cure, more a treatment, but at least it'll feel nice and you ought to be able to..."

Oh, no, he couldn't be babbling this much. He couldn't be but he was and she was going to think him incredibly stupid and possibly even mental. She was Ginny, one of his closest friends, and he'd never been unable to speak in front of her before Hermione and her stupid feelings talk, why was he having so much trouble now? "It ought to go away in a bit," he finished quietly, keeping his eyes on the floor between them.

Ginny watched in vague confusion as Neville all of a sudden became flustered and stammery. Of course it was generally how she was feeling on the inside at the moment too, but she was doing her best to control the urge to babble incessantly. What had gotten him so out of sorts?

A thought dawned on her. What if Hermione had accidently let something slip about her fancying him? What if he knew how she felt and was afraid of sending her mixed signals because he didn't want to hurt her feelings? What if he was just figuring out that she was the one Hermione had been talking about? Oh bollocks, she needed to talk to the Head Girl and find out what was said in that conversation. She had to know so that she could figure it all out. She needed...a good smack upside the head. Merlin on a stick she was being ridiculous.

The entire situation had been blown entirely out of proportion. She wasn't this girl. Not anymore at least. She was someone who could take control of a silly crush. She had with Michael and Dean hadn't she? And hadn't she been the one to kiss Harry after the Quidditch Cup? She wasn't the girl who hid from her feelings anymore. She was the girl who owned up to them. Even if this could turn into a horrifyingly awkward experience.

But it was Neville. If she couldn't be honest with him, than what hope was there for her with any other bloke? She just had to do it quickly and hope for the best. After all what kind of Gryffindor was she to be running away from her problems like that?

She stood and glanced down at the compress in her hand as she took a steadying breath. It was now or never...right? Of course never was looking like more and more an appealing option.

"Thanks, Neville. Really. You're the best." She said softly, glancing up at him, she gave a small smile. Before she could second guess herself, she placed a hand on his shoulder, leaned up and kissed him softly. She went back to her flat feet and tried unsuccessfully to read his expression.

After a brief moment of panicking, she ran a quick hand through her hair."I'd...erm...better go then." She said quickly, taking a few quick steps to the door.

Neville blinked once. And then twice. He'd imagined it. He had to have. Or he was having that dream again. But the softest brush of her lips had certainly felt real enough. She'd kissed him. Ginny Weasley had actually kissed him.

And maybe it was wrong, and maybe it wasn't, but he didn't want that to be the one and only time he ever felt that. Harry? Harry who? The bloke who'd let her go? Who'd pushed her away over and over? The one who hadn't even noticed she was alive until the prior year?

No. Neville wouldn't let this chance get away from him. He'd wanted this for too bloody long to let her just slip out the door, leaving him standing half open-mouthed staring after her. Which was what he was doing at that moment. No. If he could face You Know Who head-on, he could certainly face this. For better or for worse.

Reaching out, he grasped her wrist in his hand. "Wait," he said quickly, pleading he wasn't too late. Hoping beyond hope he hadn't just made the biggest prat ever of himself. Careful of her eye, Neville used the wrist in her hand to pull her closer. And, finally, finally as fiercely as he dared, he slipped his arms gently around her waist and brought his mouth down to hers. Merlin. Finally. If she wanted nothing to do with him later, well...at least he had this.

The only thought in Ginny's mind was to get out of that dormroom as quickly as she possibly could. What had she been thinking? Why would she chance something like that? Now she'd gone and made a complete idiot out of herself as well as possibly ruined one of the best friendships that anyone had ever had. Merlin why was she so bloody stupid?

Before she could get more than three steps away, there was a tug on her wrist. She glanced back over at him, trying not to show her emotions. But she didn't have time to try to explain because she was being pulled closer to him. His arms encircled her waist and hers automatically moved to his shoulders. Her eyes fluttered closed and everything in that one blissful moment seemed to slip away. Her black eye, the doubts and fears she had about this, thoughts of Harry or anyone else for that matter. Who cared about any of it right then? Certainly not the redhead.

When they finally broke apart and she was back on her flat feet, her heart was racing and her mind was going about a mile a minute. This was about the last thing she'd been expecting from this evening and yet...here she was; in the arms of her best mate and really, she couldn't quite picture anywhere else she'd rather be in that moment.

"Well..." She said, figuring someone ought to break the silence. "This night has certainly been full of surprises." Her lips, still pink from the kiss were tugging into a smile as she looked up at him.

He really probably shouldn't have done that. Not then and probably not there. There were so many things to consider. Harry's feelings, Dean's, Ron's... Did he really want to sleep surrounded by all of that?

But the most comforting thought in the world slipped over him. He didn't care. She'd kissed him back. Neville was anything but experienced, but even he could tell that. And if she wanted this, and he knew he did, then who was he to deny it? They'd been through more than enough. They deserved something, right?

Of course, the possibility that it was only a one time sort of thing did cross his mind. "Any good surprises?" he asked, slowly, almost afraid of her answer. "Or all bad ones?" He realised that he hadn't yet let her go, and he found he didn't actually care to. If that was what she wanted, she could pull away. He wouldn't hang on to her if it wasn't what she wanted. But he certainly wasn't letting go on his own.

"I can think of a few good ones, actually." Ginny replied with a small laugh. "There is one that outshines all the rest by a long shot though."

Okay. Well now that reality was settling back in rather nicely, Ginny was able to breathe and think like a normal person again. Well maybe not entirely normal, but who was keeping score anymore? She wasn't daft enough to think that this would go without reprecussions. Clearly they were going to have to make a decision about all of this and well there were other factors to be considered. Weren't there? Because if they were both happy, than what did the rest matter? So what if Ron was upset that she was dating again? So what if the whole school talked about them? So what if he was leaving in three months? They had now, didn't they? Had she learned nothing about taking the time she had from last year? Things can always go wrong, but savor the moment and all that.

"Mmm?" Neville asked, in a tone that he wanted to sound flirtatious, but was pretty sure it sounded as insecure as he felt. "And what part would that be? I know, the part where you're going to smell like lavender all night?" Which he didn't mind one bit. It was, by far, his favourite herb. "The herb," he added, as a thought occurred to him. "Not the girl!"

He couldn't help himself. He laughed. So many months, even years of agonizing had all come to a head in just a few minutes. The rush of emotions and adrenaline and excitement and fear that burst through every inch of him was making him lightheaded and giddy and, Merlin help him, downright hopeful. The stress of the last two years seemed almost minimal just then.

Ginny smiled at his teasing, biting her lower lip slightly as she shook her head. "Nope. Not the smelling like lavender." She said slowly. "Care to guess again?" Her fingers drummed idly against his shoulders, just as a teensy outlet for the energy rushing through her.

It was funny how one thing could turn an entire day around. None of that mattered now. It didn't matter that she had a wretched day because it had all led up to this moment. If she hadn't lost her Quidditch gloves, she wouldn't have gottnen socked by Bulstrode, and Neville wouldn't have had to patch her up and she wouldn't have kissed him.

So everything her Mum was spouting about things being fate was true...hmmm.

Hesitating the briefest of moments, Neville leaned down to press another, light kiss against her lips. "Nope," he murmured, pretending to think it over again, "not a clue. You know how slow I can be, though. Why don't you give me a hint?"

She couldn't possibly mean him. But he couldn't help but think that maybe she did. She hadn't pulled away yet. She was still there, nestled in his arms. Whether or not he could believe it, there she was.

Ginny smiled against his lips, scrunching her nose just a bit. "A hint? Hmmm..." He had to have known it was him. What else could she have been talking about? "Let's see, then. Uhm well it happened in this spot. With a brilliant bloke. And I'm about to have a repeat of that moment."

With that being said, she leaned up on her tip toes and pressed her lips against his. One hand moved to cup the back of his neck pulling him closer.

Neville actually felt a bit lightheaded at the touch of her lips and the gentle tugging of her hand, but it was that pleasant, fun headrush. The kind like you got from eating too much ice cream too fast, or eating way too many chocolates. He felt all warm and his head was fuzzy and it sounded like it should be the most uncomfortable feeling ever. Instead, he'd never been happier than he was right at that exact moment.

Reaching up, he tenderly ran his fingers through the loose strands of hair framing her face. He pulled back a bit, smiling down at her. Nope, she still hadn't pulled away. So far, definitely so good. "So...you don't mind, then?" he asked, annoyed with himself for asking but knowing he needed to. Maybe he couldn't exactly get a definite commitment from her, but he needed to at least know if she was going to still be his friend even after he'd foolishly kissed her there when she was injured and vulnerable.

"Mind?" Ginny asked with a bit of a laugh. "Mind what, exactly? Feeling like a complete dork because I can't stop smiling despite the fact my eye was nearly swollen shut not twenty minutes ago?" She gave another laugh and shook her head. "Not even a little bit."

Of course, they probably couldn't stand like that forever, no matter how much she would've liked that idea. Eventually, they were going to have to have 'The Talk'. But that could wait. For now at least. She would rather enjoy this moment than have to decide on the future.

Neville really didn't have a problem with the standing there like that forever part. Sure, a part of him obviously wanted to see if she wanted him for more than just snogging. He wanted her as his girlfriend, his and no one else's. And all that Hermione had said made him wonder if maybe it was possible she might actually want that, too.

But he knew just how lucky he was to even have this. "Well... I couldn't let that eye stay swollen..." he began, smiling despite himself. "Your eyes are too pretty for that."

If there were a more cheesy line in the history of ever, Neville wasn't sure what it could be. Something about an angel falling from Heaven, maybe. Or finding the perfect girl. But his? Was definitely high up there. Oh, Godric. Learning process, definitely.

Ginny was positively scarlet at that compliment. She was, if it were even possible, worse at taking compliments now than she was before all of this. Smiling regardless, she glanced away, trying to urge the colour from her cheeks. It didn't matter if the line itself was cheesy. It was the thought behind it that did her in.

"Trying to soften me up to get another kiss?" she asked with a grin. "Because you know, Mr. Longbottom, flattery will get you everywhere." She leaned up again and brushed her lips against his, almost teasingly this time.

Now he was bound to be permanently pink. He'd wanted this for so long that her light teasing was nearly enough to undo him. "Mmm," he replied, sighing softly as she pulled back. "Wouldn't dare. Just happens to be a perk that comes with it."

If it were true that flattery got him everywhere, he'd have been in this position long ago. Complimenting everything from how she looked in her Yule Ball dress to her Quidditch game ought to have gotten him something. But maybe it had. Maybe that's what it had taken, years of compliments, of being there for her, of staying by her side no matter what (or who) came along.

Neville wasn't going to dwell on the past. And he definitely wasn't going to worry about the future. There and then, that's what he wanted to think about. It was ten times easier to hold her and to kiss her and to let her kiss him then worry about the consequences that were bound to fall on him soon enough.

"You... You've no idea how long I've wanted to kiss you," he admitted with a furious blush. Though he knew she couldn't say the same, he figured if they were being honest enough to snog where any of his dormmates could walk in, he could be honest enough to let her know what she meant to him.

Ginny smiled at his blush and placed a soft hand on his cheek, tilting her head to the side just a bit. "So why didn't you then, goose?" She asked. Not that she was much better, really. Though, she was beginning to learn from her mistakes.

She wasn't entirely sure what this was or where it was going, but she was sure about one thing. She was happy right there in his arms. It felt...surprisingly right. Not that they'd never hugged or anything before, but it was never like this. And this, this was something she could get used to.

She wasn't going to mess this up. She wasn't going to let it end up ruining their friendship. No matter what happened. She wasn't about to lose him over anything.

Neville smiled a bit sheepishly and shrugged his shoulders; the gesture was almost helpless, his way of admitting that he couldn't help himself around her. "You know why," he said quietly. "I just...I wanted to. But I couldn't." Never mind that this was completely new territory for him. Almost every time he'd gotten close enough to do so, something had come between them. Other boys, of course, interruptions from friends, even the time Crookshanks had pounced on his feet when he'd just about gotten up the courage.

That and there was always the fear of rejection. Even then, holding her close in his dormroom, kissing her tenderly, he wasn't sure he'd done the right thing. She seemed to enjoy it, sure, but snogging was a rather pleasant thing, he was learning. But what about them?

"So..." he began a moment later, biting his lower lip hesitantly. "What...um. So what happens from here?" It was probably nervy of him to ask, but he needed to know. If this was the only time he'd get to do this...or if she just wanted it to be casual kissing, he needed to know up front. He was too crazy about her.

Ginny gave a gentle smile and a soft nod to show her understanding. She could relate to that, she supposed. After all, hadn't she been hesitant about the whole thing as well? The only reason she'd acted in the first place was because she had a bit more experience in that area and was therefore that much more comfortable with the whole thing. She certainly couldn't fault him for being cautious. Not after how she had acted with Harry.

Ginny took a deep breath. In spite of knowing that the question was bound to come up, it didn't make her any more prepared to answer it. She had several answers that she could give him for that question, but she wasn't quite sure which was the right answer.

"Well..." She started, leaving her hands on his shoulders to keep a bit of contact. She didn't want him to go ahead and think she felt this was a mistake. "I like you, Neville." She felt stupid saying it because of course he knew she liked him. "I mean...like more than just my best mate and all that rubbish." There that was mildly better, wasn't it? She paused for a moment trying to pick her words. Merlin this would be bloody well easier if he weren't leaving in a few months. "And I s'pose I'd understand if you wouldn't want to, but y'know, you're the only one I'd want to be snogging right now and I figure that has to mean something, yeah?" She wasn't sure if she was making any sense.

Sure, it meant something. But what? Did that mean just snogging? Did that mean he was allowed to take her to Hogsmeade properly? Did that mean other people would know he was the only one she'd want to be snogging, or was this going to be just between them?

Neville took a deep breath, pulling back but not enough to break the touch between them completely. Absently, he brushed the backs of his fingers against her cheek. It was like he'd done it a hundred times, he didn't even think about it, and maybe that's because in his mind, he had.

"I'm completely crazy about you," he finally admitted a beat later. "And... I'm okay with this not coming to anything, Ginny. I have been for years. But I need to know. I can't..." He shook his head, looking down before meeting her eyes again. "I can't just be... I don't know. A rebound sort of thing or...whatever. And if that's what this is, well... I can't. I'm sorry, but this? Us?" Hesitantly, he bit his lower lip. "It would mean too much to me."

Ginny gave him a vaguely confused look, but let him finish. "Neville...I never thought of you as any sort of rebound." She started. "I wouldn't expect you to...I mean, I wouldn't have..." She was getting herself all flusterd and took a deep breath. "What I mean to say is," She started over a bit more slowly, "I care too much about you to lead you on or let you go on thinking something else." She gave a small smile and closed the space he'd put between them. "Neville, I wouldn't have kissed you if I didn't intend for this to go somewhere."

For a moment, Neville simply stared at her. Then, completely relieved and relaxed for the first time in weeks, he started laughing. "Really? Honestly? You don't have to say that just because you kissed me, you know. But if you do, well..." Well he could get used to that and a whole lot more. The fact that every childish daydream he'd had about her was turning into reality was almost more than he could handle as he touched his finger to the tip of her nose.

"Of course I don't have to say it just 'cause I kissed you." Ginny laughed. "I say it because I mean it. Just like I kissed you because I meant it, goose." Her nose scrunched has his finger brushed it lightly. "Right then. We've got that all settled then?"

"Mmmm..." Neville's brow scrunched in pretend thought. "I guess so," he replied with a grin. With a shy glance, Neville instinctively reached down for an additional kiss.
