Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend!  Next Entry
Who: Neville Longbottom and Ginny Weasley
When: Saturday night, just past curfew
Where: Gryffindor common room
What: A heart-to-heart that will likely be completely and utterly adorable
Rating: Give it about a PG-13, just in case of Ginny's mouth!

Neville was glad he had made friends with the house elves through Ernie. Thanks to that, it took no time at all to get a couple of mugs of steaming cocoa brought up to Gryffindor tower. He was afraid he of the entirely unnatural grace would have to trek up those awful horrible evil stairs with two incredibly hot drinks. Having them brought made it ten times easier, and he was waiting on the couch in front of the fireplace with the them when Ginny came down with the biscuits.

If he allowed himself a moment to really think on it, Neville would have to admit it was getting harder and harder to have these sorts of talks with Ginny. They'd been having them for Merlin knew how long, but all it did was increase the feelings that came over him when he was around her. It didn't really help that Ginny was incredibly affectionate and always left him with that twinge of hope that maybe, someday, there could be something more. It was one thing when Hermione talked in general about him finding someone, but it was another entirely when Neville only wanted one someone and it was one he couldn't have.

After all, who could ever compete with The Chosen One?

Pushing those sorts of ideas from his already full mind, he curled up into the couch comfortably as he waited, setting the mugs on the side tables and pulling the sleeves of his jumper down over his hands. He'd given up trying to impress her a year ago. Now, when she joined him, it would just be Neville.

Ginny was feeling particularly stupid and female that night and had really only wanted to go for a fly to get her mind off it all. However it was just past curfew and she really was trying to stay out of detention these days. There was enough rule bending that went on during the regular day that she didn't need to add unnecessary trips around the pitch to that list.

Who better then, to talk to in order to get her mind off of things than Neville? He was her best mate after all and he'd helped her more times than she could honestly count. So she slipped into an old jumper that likely belonged to Bill or Charlie judging by how low it hung and how long the sleeves were. She pulled her hair into a loose pony tail that hung lazily over her shoulder and grabbed a plate of biscuits that her mother had sent recently and headed down to the commonroom.

When she reached the couch where he was already curled up she gave a smile and set the biscuits down on the table beside the mugs of cocoa. She plopped herself down beside him and curled up herself. "Mmm, smells delicous down here." She remarked with a grin. "House elves bring the cocoa?"

Neville glanced up as she joined him, smiling widely. Even in a baggy old jumper and a plain, mussed ponytail, she looked just perfect. Merlin, he really did need to move past this. He took a deep breath, let it out, and nodded.

"You know, I could have made it myself! I don't know why you have to go and assume the elves did it!" They had, of course, so he wasn't really angry or anything. But some credit someday might be nice. Just in case, he laughed to show he was only kidding. "Of course they did. Can't make it to the kitchens and back in ten minutes anyway."

"You could have...but I know you better? Besides, where would you have gotten the cocoa anyhow? Only elves could make it up here that fast with two piping hot mugs." She gave a smal laugh and a knowing look. "Not that I don't have any faith in your cocoa making abilities of course." Ginny added giving him a reassuring pat on the arm.

"Anyhow, how has your night been? Anything thrilling?" She asked, hoping to keep the conversation away from her for as long as she could manage.

Studying her for a moment, Neville gave her an eyes-narrowed style glare, as if he was sizing up her assessment of his cocoa making. When he'd 'decided' that she was okay with it, he relaxed his features into his more typical expression.

"Me? Thrilling? Gin, my idea of thrilling is the hybrid Megan and I are growing flowering. Which it hasn't yet, so there's still no thrill there." He was, quite possibly, the most boring person ever. "I think the most thrilling thing that happened tonight was Trevor hiding himself in Seamus' bedroom slippers. He put his left foot in, and the squeal... It was actually quite girlish, I'll have you know."

When she realized that he was studying her, she pulled the most innocent expression she could muster and batted her eyelashed a bit dramaticly. Grinning when his assessment proved her okay she grabbed her mug of cocoa and took a hesitant sip trying to avoid tongue burns.

"Well, I reckon that would be rather thrilling. After all, you don't exactly know what it's going to look like when it flowers, yeah?" Not that she really knew much about Herbology, despite her attempts. Letting out a giggle at the news of Seamus's girly shriek Ginny shook her head. "Nothing funnier than the idea of Seamus all jumpy and girly like. Trevor alright?"

"Oh, he's fine," Neville reassured, then grinned almost wickedly. "They both are. I think at first he thought it was a spider or a snake or something. He probably would've squashed Trevor if he hadn't turned the slipper over and out comes the poor little guy. Don't think he'll be sleeping in there again." With an exaggerated wrinkle of his nose, he added, "though why anyone would want to be sleeping in Seamus' smelly old shoes is beyond me."

He gave her another curious look before reaching for one of the biscuits, nibbling at the edge. They weren't down there talking because of Seamus. Something was obviously on her mind. But if it helped to hear rather pathetic anecdotes from his day helped her, then that was all that mattered.

"Well I'm glad for that at least. Poor Trevor needs to find better places for naps, I think." Ginny laughed. "Maybe toads don't have noses?" She really wasn't very well versed in toad anatomy but it certainly would explain Trevor's choice in temporary bed. "Mind you, I'm going to have to take the mickey out of Seamus tomorrow at breakfast." She added with a grin.

Ginny was all to happy to keep talking about Neville's day. It did have the advantage of keeping her out of the spotlight for one thing. She was feeling slightly pathetic and idiotic and wasn't quite sure if she was ready to admit what a sappy girl she felt like to anyone. Though, she supposed if she was going to be forced to admit it to anyone, at least it was Neville. He wasn't all that likely to take the mickey or even make her feel guilty about the whole thing. He was rather brilliant like that. S'why he was one of her best mates after all.

Neville grinned almost mischievously at her suggestion of bothering Seamus in the morning. Poor guy. Oh, well, that's what he got for being the one all the girls swooned over. At least this way Neville knew one girl wouldn't. And if it happened to be the girl he wanted, all the better, right?

"Go easy on him," Neville encouraged. "A big green and brown toad would be a bit of a surprise for anyone, especially when you're trying to get into your jim-jams." He laughed a bit, finishing off his biscuit a bit more eagerly now that they were steadily talking. But he couldn't keep dominating the conversation forever. "So what's this about wanting a late night fly, hmm? That's a bit late even for you."

"Oh, you know as well as I do that his head needs a bit of deflating. Git that he is." Ginny laughed. She did like Seamus well enough, but never fancied him or anything of the sort. He was just Seamus after all and she felt it her job to bring him back down to earth when he got a bit too over-confident.

At Neville's gentle prying Ginny let out a small sigh and gave a slight shrug. "Oh...it's really nothing very important." She said, knowing full well that that answer wasn't going to be enough to cover it. Neville knew her far too well to accept her brushing it off as though it was nothing. Of course he would be right in doing so, but that was completely beside the point in her book. "Just got myself ten-shades of worked up over thinking and the like is all. Mostly just wanted to force myself to stop and have to focus on something else."

That much he'd known. But thinking about what? The future? The path of their Ministry or their time in war? Or maybe something a little more personal. Had she and Hermione had a row? Everyone seemed to be these days.

Neville considered his next course of action. He didn't want to make her tell him. She wouldn't trust him very much, then. But he did think she might feel a bit better if she talked about it. With a tiny nip at his lower lip, he asked, "thinking about what? I didn't think there was much of anything that could keep you up at night." He offered a smile, letting her know he was teasing. After the things she'd been through, and the things she'd faced? She had every right to stay up at night with thoughts or nightmares. And damn Harry for thinking he was the only one.

Ginny gave a small smile back and shook her head just a little bit. "You're going to think I'm completely pathetic if I tell you." She said after a long moment of considering her options. She was trying to work on the whole letting people in again thing, after all, wasn't she? If she couldn't let Neville in, then who could she bother with? Besides, he offered a valid point. While she had at one time been very prone to nightmares and sleepless nights, lately things had been getting considerably better.

Of course, there was the occassional panic attack in the middle of the night where she woke up in a cold sweat, but they weren't so frequent these days and now, she could even fall back asleep most of the time.

"You promise not to take the mickey or anything like that?" Of course he wouldn't but she'd been raised by the twins and was therefore more than just slightly nervous about spilling something that might give fodder for teasing.

Neville gave her a 'look'. The sort that said 'what kind of bloke do you take me for?', 'what sort of best mate am I?' and 'you know me better than that' all in one. If there was anything he'd picked up from his gran, it was how to give that look.

"Ginny Weasley," he began in a very Hermione-like tone, "you've known me for what, six years almost? The only time in the entirety of those years that I ever found something to tease you about was Fleur threatening to make you wear pink to the wedding. And you have to admit, that was pretty brilliant." Winking playfully, he shook his head. "You know better than that. Come on." Gently, he rested a hand on her arm. "You may as well fess up. You know you'll end up spilling it out eventually anyway. Better I'm the one around to hear it then you bursting from it and announcing it in Charms or something."

Ginny's eyes dropped to the floor at that look. She knew she was being absurd, and now felt a bit guilty questioning, even for a moment, Neville's sympathetic nature. She heaved a very big sigh and looked up at him with bright brown eyes, still full of something deeper.

"I'll have you know, I feel like a right prat about all of this because it is so utterly ridiculous, but I was worrying myself over Harry and it's been over a month since I've given up on the idea of the pair of us, which was probably the healthiest decision I've made in a rather long time, mind you. But, y'know I thought I'd be past all of this rubbish and now all I feel is wretched and girly-like which just makes it all seem that much worse and dear Merlin I'm babbling like a fool." She let out mostly in one breath. Well that wasn't exactly how she'd planned it to go. She could feel her cheeks getting hot, embarrassed by how easily she simply let everything fall out of her mouth without any control over stopping it.

Neville forced his features not to betray the drop in his stomach. He probably should have expected that. It always came back to Harry in the end. The one person who couldn't see what was right in front of them. How Harry could have let her go was completely beyond Neville, and it pained him to see her still struggling with it.

Which was how, despite every intention not to, he blurted, "he's being a complete git!" Even he, so schooled in keeping his expression neutral around her, couldn't hide the surprise on his face at his outburst. "I mean," he stammered, "he's just... He ought to see... What I'm very ungracefully trying to say is, you're amazing. And he should see that. And if he can't, well, he is a git and you deserve more." Not his smoothest recovery ever, but not entirely wrong. "But," he added a moment later, "you can't just...turn your feelings for someone off like a lantern. It doesn't really work that way."

Neville's surprise at his outburst was nothing compared to Ginny's. In all the years she had known him, she couldn't remember a time when he blurted out something so completely...unNeville-like. She gave him a very confused look until he started to make a lick of sense again as he was explaining.

"I...I am not that amazing, Neville." Ginny said with a small smile. "You just say that because you're my best mate is all." She gave another glance down at the floor before meeting his eyes again. "And besides, I know he's being a git, which is why I shouldn't be thinking about him in the first place. I've decided that I'm moving on. It shouldn't have to be any harder than that."

At his last statement she frowned and folded her arms across her chest in a very 'five-year old whose decided to pout' kind of way. "Well it should work that way."

She really didn't see it. "You are amazing, and you need to quit thinking otherwise. You're pretty, you're smart, no one stands a chance against us with you on the pitch, you're fun to be around. You've always got a story or a joke ready when someone's feeling down. I don't know how you don't know that." His cheeks flushed pink, then, and he glanced away from her, using his cocoa as an excuse to regather himself.

"Besides," he continued after a few, too quick, still hot swallows. "It doesn't work that way. I'm sorry, but it doesn't. You can't just decide to be over someone and move on and it just...happens." Merlin, how he wished it did. "You've been crazy about him for years, Ginny. Even when you were with Michael and Dean," another sore subject in Neville's eyes, "you still were around him all the time. That couldn't have made it any easier."

His stomach was churning now and Godric he wished Mrs. Weasley's biscuits weren't so incredibly good. Of course, if he'd known this was the direction their conversation would be taking, he might've stopped at one, maybe two.

Ginny sat there wide-eyed at Neville as he so easily listed off her attributes. She was in a mild state of shock, though from what exactly she wasn't quite sure. He'd told her most of those things before, but never all at once. Never in a list that came so easily from the top of his head as though he'd thought about this. She felt her cheeks growing hotter and shoved a biscuit in her mouth to keep her from having to respond to him right away. She was at a loss for words and was much more interested in chewing than saying something completely daft.

Thankfully, he continued before she had swallowed, giving her just a tick more time to come up with something to say.

"Well go on now, Nev. You'll give me a big head with all that talk." She was smiling though, wondering how it was possible that he was always there to boost her up when she was feeling like dirt. And he did always seem to be there for her.

"Well that's rubbish. I used to simply decide things all the time when I was younger. I decided when I did or didn't like a vegetable. When I was afraid of the dark, Fred and George teased me and so I decided that I wasn't scared anymore and then I wasn't." She was still sort of pouting, but knew that he was right. "And anyhow, if I know he's such a git, and I know you say I deserve better, then why should it be this hard?" She furrowed her brow for a moment and sighed.

Oh, he wished it weren't that hard. Not only because he'd love to see her move on from Harry Sometimes-Thought-He-Was-Noblest-Of-All Potter, but because he'd been trying so hard for so long to get over her. "Because," Neville said in a much smaller voice than the one he'd been using, "that's not how emotions are. Decisions like vegetables, that's a bit different than matters of the heart, I think."

He sat his mug down, staring at it solemnly for a moment before glancing back up at her. If he were a different sort of bloke, he might tap his index finger teasingly against that pouting lower lip. Or an entirely other bloke would attempt to kiss the pout right off of her. But he was neither of those. He was Neville Longbottom, complete rubbish around girls and rather awkward around most anyone else, too. He didn't know a real date from a friends date any longer, he'd been having the second kind for so long. What he knew of women he'd gleaned from Hermione and Ginny, and a bit of Luna, but mostly it was what he'd picked up from his grandmother, and he refused to believe all girls were like her.

The very thought of him becoming one of those other sorts of blokes set his stomach to churning all over again and he sighed. "It just takes time, I think," he continued a moment later. "After what all you've been through with him? You don't just forget those sorts of things over night. You could've...you could have died fighting with him, that's pretty big." The very words caused his entire body to clench, thinking how miserable he would have been without her. Sure, Harry might have felt guilty that she was gone, but could it possibly compare to losing one of his closest companions?

Ginny was not a fan of that answer, despite the fact that she knew it was the right one. This was precisely the reason she knew that talking to Neville was the best idea. He at least could talk sense to her. "Stupid emotions ruining everything." She muttered under her breath before taking a sip of her cocoa.

At his reasoning her body tensed and her eyes dropped for a moment before she could stop herself. She shook her head and leaned over to give him a sort of awkward half-hug. "Well that line of thinking is silly." Ginny said, her voice not nearly as strong as it was just a moment ago. "Don't you know I'm not allowed to die? Charlie explicitly forbade it." She gave a weak smile.

Neville not only accepted the half hug, but reached out to hold her a bit tighter. He didn't like where the line of conversation had gone anymore than she did. "Well, consider this a second command. Just in case you try and defy Charlie's or something." Though he refused to admit to himself what it was he was feeling just then, deep inside, Neville knew. If Harry didn't realise what it was he'd given up, then he really was lost to them all. Because there was no way anyone could hold his girl and not be insanely in love with her.

It was that thought that made him pull back, gently tucking a loose piece of hair back into her ponytail. "There. See? You're very much still here, right? And nothing's going to change that." Not that bloody wizard, and no other force if Neville could help it.

"Duly noted." Ginny said softly before swallowing hard. A small flip happened in her stomach which he squeezed her a bit tighter. This of course she couldn't understand. After all, Neville was her mate. He was brilliant and all, but he was her mate and she was...well she was Ginny. Neville couldn't possibly...

He pulled back and she sat up straight, cheeks flushing as his hand brushed her hair back. "Just so we're clear, you're not allowed to die either, yeah?" She said trying to lighten up the conversation. It had taken a serious turn that she wasn't quite prepared to deal with.

"Oh, please," Neville scoffed. "If that old coot couldn't do me in with his great big house pet, no one can." Which sounded a lot more confident than he actually felt. If he could carry out Harry's only ever request of him and still not carry on a normal conversation with a girl, what sort of bravery was that?

He pulled away just a bit more, scooting back some on the couch. He hadn't even meant to do all that he already had. Looking away from her, he took the last biscuit from the plate and broke it in half, offering her the bigger piece. "Now no one can say I'm a selfish, foolish Gryffindor who doesn't share."

Ginny let out a laugh, and shook her head. Of course they could laugh now. Now that he was still here and alive and not mauled by a giant snake. Ginny, of course refused to think about that night. The night she almost lost more than just her own life, but everyone she loved in one shot.

"Not that anyone's ever said that about you" Ginny pointed out with a smile before breaking off a piece of her biscuit and popping it into her mouth. "Everyone knows you're among the least selfish people around."

"No one says that," Neville reasoned, "because no one talks about me. I'm not exactly gossip material, you know." Which wasn't entirely true. His presence in the school had been steadily increasing ever since he and Ginny and Luna had joined Harry, Ron, and Hermione at the Department of Mysteries. And now, since that night that most of them were attempting to forget, he heard occasional whispers as he walked by, and rumours being spread from time to time. "I'm actually terribly boring. Didn't we discuss how a plant is the entire highlight of my day?" That and this talk. But that sounded awkward.

"Oh, shows what you know!" Ginny teased lightly. She took on a high swoony, soprano voice and held her cocoa to her chest as her eyelashed batted dramaticly. "Oh that Neville Longbottom! He's so dreamy and unselfish." Holding the back of her hand to her forehead she leaned backwards into the couch. "He's just so rugged and brave!" Well of course, she hadn't witnessed such brazen gossip about her best mate, but that's not to say that she hadn't heard any at all. In fact there was a small group of third or fourth years who did find him very interesting. He of course, didn't need to know that.

"You are not even an ounce boring, Nev!" Ginny protested. "You've got piles of adventure just aching to bust out!"

Instead of laughing, Neville only rolled her eyes at her feigned tone. "Dreamy and unselfish, wow, that's just what every bloke has ever strived to be." Rugged and brave, maybe. But Neville wasn't dumb enough to think he'd ever reach that point. "And why are we back to the adventure busting out of me? Do you realise how painful that sounds?" He laughed anyway. She had that rather irritating effect on him.

Reaching over, he gave her elbow a squeeze. "It's good to see you smiling, you know that?" And he meant that. Both as the boy who'd befriended a scared first year and as the bloke who'd been in love with her for years.

He squeezed her elbow and again she felt that familiar flip of her stomach, her cheeks reddening as a smile tugged harder at the corners of her mouth. "You too, Nev." She said softly. "Besides, you make it so bloody easy to smile."

Did he? Well, he supposed that was something. If nothing else, at least he meant something to her. Even if it was just the mate who made her smile. He gave a bashful look and lowered his eyes. "Well... You know how much I like your smile." The fact that she'd yet to see right through him still fascinated him. "And besides, you deserve it. And I can't have our best Chaser walking around depressed, can I? I'd let Gryffindor down, can't have that." Merlin he was babbling and making excuses and bugger it all, he had to stop.

Or he could just fess up. He could just come right out and say all that was going through his mind. But he knew he wouldn't. Maybe she did deserve more than Harry, but Neville was pretty sure she deserved more than him, too.

"Leave it to you to uphold the integrity of the Gryffindor Quidditch team." Ginny laughed. Though she wasn't entirely sure about the her deserving it part. She certainly didn't deserve it anymore than he did.

But that was the thing about Neville, wasn't it? He was always so concerned about everyone else and didn't even think he deserved what he did. He was too busy to worry about himself because he was making things easy for everyone else. If Ginny was being honest with herself, Neville was the only one who was there to make things better for her every single time things went wonky.

Neville had to smile at that. Was it so wrong to enjoy winning the Cup? Or rather, to enjoy watching Ginny win the cup? The way she lit up whenever they won... She needed things to cheer her up just then, and every Quidditch win would likely do just that.

"Hey, Gin?" he said a moment later, taking the chance to look up at her. Really look at her, in all of her oversized-jumpered messy-haired prettiness.

I know you care about Harry. And maybe he is the one, I don't know. But you do deserve better." He took a deep breath, meeting her eyes. "He's not the only bloke in this school who's noticed you. And... And I'll bet you could have your pick of any of them."

Biting his lip, he glanced away and then shrugged. "It's your choice, Ginny. But you don't have to be yanked around like he's been doing to you. Know that, okay?"

Ginny was quiet for a long moment as she processed what Neville had said. He was right of course. He had a nasty habit of that, didn't he? But that was moot as it seemed to be clear to everyone but her until now that she and Harry just weren't meant to be. Not now at least.

"I know...Only took me a few years, but I know." She gave a small, sort of sad smile. "Thanks, Neville. You really are the best, you know that?"

Neville gave a slightly embarrassed smile. If he was the best, why wasn't it ever good enough? "Yeah well. I do my best. For you, at least."

Reaching over, he gave her hand a tight squeeze before getting to his feet. "Feeling any better?" he asked, knowing she probably wasn't. How could she? The boy she was crazy about had become a prat almost overnight. But maybe he'd at least started her on the road to something.

"Yes, actually." She said reaching out her hands for him to help her up. And the truth of it, she was. Of course, she was vaguely more confused about things than she was before this talk, but other things were in much better focus. It was simply a matter of realizing who it was who was talking to her, reassuring her, and walking her through everything.

When she was on her feet she pulled him into a tight hug, wrapping her arms around his neck (of course this forced her onto her tiptoes). "Thank you, Neville. Really." He'd helped more than he knew.

It was another one of those moments where he desperately wished his best friend wasn't quite so touchy-feely. But no matter how he was feeling, Neville never did turn down a hug from Ginny. He held her close, hoping that would be enough for both of them just then. "You don't have to thank me," he told her quietly. "You ought to know better by now." He eased her back on to the flats of her feet and dropped a light kiss against her forehead. "Get some sleep, Gin. I feel like you could probably use it."

"Yeah, but I like to thank you anyhow because you deserve it." She replied softly with a small smile. He kissed her forehead and she scrunched her nose, still grinning. "You're probably right. It is getting a bit late, isn't it?" Though how it had gotten so late so quickly she'd never really figure out. "G'night, Nev."

He gave her a quick smile before releasing her and turning to the boy's dorms. "Night, Gin. Sweet dreams." With any luck at all, his would be. After the evening he'd just had, there really wasn't any reason not to be.
