Who: Tracey Davis and Derek Willoughby
When: Monday afternoon
Where: Hogwarts hallway
What: Running back down to her dorm after studying at the library, Tracey doesn't realize she'd left her bag open until a bit away from the library. (And I have yet to RP Tracey.. I know, gasphorrorshock! :OO )
Rating: TBA

Studying too much? Please.. it wasn't possible for one to study too much especially in regards to what you wanted to achieve. And for a Healer apprenticeship, it was mandatory that one needed to get especially good grades. It's like Muggle medical school, as her mother had once explained to her. Keeping up very high grades because hell, it's not a subject you can scrape with just a just-passing-grade. Would you want to put your life in the hands of a professional like that?

Well, Tracey didn't think getting good grades made someone a better Healer or doctor or whatever, but it was essential for getting her way into the program itself. Damned if she was going to risk anything.

Sure enough, just because it was a Monday, it didn't stop her from going to the library that afternoon to study. (Seriously, it's almost like she belonged in Ravenclaw instead.)

After her session, she grabbed onto her bag, holding it in her hand till she walked out the doors and started down the familiar corridor. She pushed her hair to one side before she could swing her bag's strap over that shoulder.. just so she wouldn't get her hair caught under it accidentally.

Unfortunately, that was the least of her worries when she swung her back and felt it suddenly lighter. As well as heard a clutter of items fall. "Oh, Circe," she groaned, stopping in her tracks. She turned around and sighed in resignation, bending down on her knees to pick up a few items. As she grabbed hold of one of her textbooks, someone slipped out and floated to the ground. Probably a loose paper as a reminder, she thought, picking it up and turning it around.

Except it wasn't. Instead it was a picture. How did it slip her mind that she kept it in there? It was one of the most valuable items she always carried on her. It was a photograph of her and Irene at the Muggle zoo in London, in front of a group of flamingoes. She'd still been so tiny that Tracey had been able to hoist her into her arms as the camera took a shot.

Two years before...

Damnit. Tracey blinked her eyes quickly, hiding the picture immediately before anyone can see it. She wasn't supposed to show the emotion, because people would question. And she still wasn't ready to answer them. Still.. after about eight months into the semester? It was probably then when Tracey realized it was still too soon for her to be leaving the school. Why did this year seem so much shorter?

Derek couldn't help but to feel conflicted. One one hand, his sixteenth birthday was just around the corner the next day and he was ecstatic about that. But with everything else that seemed to be going on -- all of the conflict that he couldn't understand, part of him felt almost guilty for looking forward so much to his big day. But then again, it only came once a year and with people who cared so much about him as they did -- his friends, family -- it would have been hard to ruin. And so, for the most part, he was in a cheery mood when he was walking back toward his tower after his classes had ended for the day.

That is until he saw someone dropping their books right out of their satchel without even seeming to notice at first. Being the gentleman he was, it was pure habit for him to rush to their aid, dropping to his knees to help collect the fallen papers and books. "All right there?" he asked the blonde girl. He recognized her as a seventh year Slytherin, but didn't really know her all that well. Just her name. He gingerly collected one of the wayward texts and handed it out toward her.

Tracey looked up in surprise, not expecting anyone to be around to see that. Well, she'd been hoping no one would have, because it was rather embarrassing. But suppose the extra help was always something to be grateful for. She straightened up, picking up the books at her first and reached out to grab the stuff he had collected for her.

"Thank you," she said with a smile, adjusting her bag on her shoulders to fit the books in comfortably. If he knew her name, great... but she didn't know his.

"I didn't realize it was open. But thanks.. um.." That was just great. Their House was going to be working with the Ravenclaws and she didn't know everyone in it.

"Sure, sure," he said straightening. After handing her the book, she pushed his hands against his thighs and got to his feet. While doing so, he eyed the bag suspiciously, wondering if perhaps there was a permanent problem with it that would cause the books to take a tumble once again. Just in case, he braced himself for such an outcome. But it seemed that, as she said, the problem had just been a bit of a mishap.

"Derek," he said. He extended his hand out to formally introduce himself. He wasn't offended that she didn't know his name. It wasn't as if they'd ever had a class together and he was a Ravenclaw. How could he take offense to that when he was sure there were people in Slytherin that he didn't know by name either. Some in his own year, even!

"Derek.. got it," Tracey stretched out a hand to take his, while the other one was still holding a few items. After letting go, she quickly shoved them in there, making a mental note that she'd organize everything as soon as she got back to her room.

"I'm Tracey." She wasn't really sure if he knew already but it would have been rude not to say it in case he hadn't. "And this normally doesn't happen with me," she added with a slight laugh. "Suppose its just not a good week."

"Good to meet you, Tracey," he said, taking his hand back. Unsure what to do with it now, he stuffed it along with the other one into the pockets of his trousers. "Don't worry," he assured her. "I won't hold it against you or point it out to everyone you walk by in the corridor." He grinned, but then his expression grew slightly more serious.

"For you as well?" he asked. It seemed like everyone was more than ready to throw the towel in that week. "I think that's the popular consensus from what I've heard," he said. He didn't know if that would make her feel better or consequently, even worse.

Tracey gave a half shrug. It wasn't really like she had ever had a very good week since the beginning of the school year. Or since after that unfortunate day last summer. They all seemed to just go by. And she couldn't remember when she ever stopped to feel extremely happy or excited about something.

Probably nothing, because if she had, she would have felt guilty. Because enjoying life didn't seem the same when you had a loved one taken away from you.

"I guess it doesn't really affect me directly, but indirectly.. well, I just don't want to see any of my friends upset, you know."

Derek chuckled then. It wasn't exactly humorous by any means but he thought her words hit a little too close to home. "I know exactly what you mean," he confessed. And the Ravenclaw boy truly did. He'd meant what he said when he expressed his fears to his uncle -- how could he personally have any opinions on things regarding the war when he wasn't fighting in it. Not like his cousin or Hannah or so many of his friends.

"It seems to be the current trend," he said with a hint of a frown. He eyed her bag again and being the boy that he was raised to be, he offered, "Why don't you let me carry that for you?" It wasn't as if he had any prior engagements.

She felt just as out of the loop and at the same time... in it. Not that anyone would really know what had happened to her sister that summer, so as far as anyone in the school knew, she hadn't even been on the receiving end of the Death Eater terrors. In actuality, she had. But she couldn't bear to even have that news known in the school.

Tracey blinked in surprise at his request but recovered quickly and slid it off. "Well, sure, I suppose.. I mean, if you really don't mind." Chivalry wasn't dead, at least. Which was great. Even when people were fighting all around her, at least she could expect the nearest guy to be an absolute gentleman.

"And.. unless you were going another way, because I was on my way down to the House." He didn't seem like the type of guy to mind getting a few inches near the Slytherin House, but she didn't want to keep him if he was in a rush.

Derek shrugged easily before taking the bag from her and slinging it over his own shoulder, opposite from the one he carried. It wasn't very heavy, but it was still weighted a lot more than his seemed to be. He had to wonder what she was all carrying in there! But then again, he knew not to ask. Ladies' bags were not a safe topic of conversation. His mother used to scold him when he'd go digging around her handbag when he was a child and curious to put his hands in everything.

"Not at all," he said. "Classes for me are finished for the day. Nothing wrong with taking a little detour," he said assuringly. No, Slytherin didn't scare him -- it never had. He had been more put off by some of the members, but that was only because he wasn't sure of how his cousin regarded them once they'd had a parting of ways. "What do you have in here?" he joked. "A dead body? You know, it really wouldn't look good on my record if I'm seen helping you cart around body parts..."

Tracey laughed slightly and shook her head. "That would be so unladylike of me, yes? I think so. Actually, I just brought a couple of textbooks with me to the library so I can study and finish some part of my homework." And, okay, a few girlish products not limited to makeup was in there as well, but she didn't wear too much of it.

Now that the bag wasn't on her shoulder, she did seem much more at ease. Tracey turned toward the direction she was heading anyway. "And I was attempting to come up with a few ideas for that goodwill project. With what's been going on, I feel like this project better be the best and nothing less."

"Probably not something you'd want to share with others if it were," he agreed with a nod. But it did make sense when she mentioned that she had loaded the bag with books, hence the source of the weight on his left shoulder.

A groan sounded when she mentioned the good will project. It really was a good idea in theory, but he didn't know how he felt about being one of the candidates to be a representative. The last he knew, it was only him who was still agreeing to do it if no one else wanted to. "I think I've been the one suckered into representing Ravenclaw," he told her as they walked. A fifth year.

"That's not so bad," Tracey thought, giving him a curious sideways glance. "Your classmates think you're fit for the job. I thought I was adamant on pushing Teddy into being the leader but he turned right around and announced that he thinks I'm a better choice. And I couldn't decline when he insisted. So did Pansy and Draco."

Plus, since she had started to come up with ideas, her confidence in the task was starting to grow. Considering she didn't want anymore arguments, she was sure she'd be able to help put together something that would bring a little more peace into the school.

"Well then," he said with a hint of smile. "It seems your classmates think you are a good fit for the job as well," he pointed out. He realized something then. "Hey!" he announced at the idea hit him while they walked. "I guess that means you and I will be the ones working together sort of," he said. After all, their houses were paired up and if they were both the chosen candidates to represent Ravenclaw and Slytherin respectively, it was a bit funny they run into one another in the corridor. Perhaps it was something like fate.

"I guess it's a good thing then that we've already cleared up the fact that you aren't carting around dead bodies," he added with a chuckle. "Unless you store them away in your dorm room or something, in which case, you should probably let me know."

They were going to work together. How did she not realize that either? Maybe because this whole time she was thanking the stars that it hadn't been Gryffindor that Slytherin was paired with. Wow, but what a strange coincidence that they ran into each other now. "We would, yes. Then sometime, I should let you know about any ideas I come up with."

Tracey giggled slightly. "You know, if they were stored in my room, you likely would never be able to see them for yourself. No bodies though, rest assured."

"Well... true" he said, frowning at this statement. "But I have secret ways, you know. I could easily gain some spies. I bet Parkinson would be willing to go to the dark side for me if I bribed her well enough." If there was a Slytherin that Derek was afraid of, Pansy Parkinson would have been a good guess. When he was little and used to tag around with his cousin, he had the distinct feeling that he wasn't the favourite of the Slytherin girl.

"Well have you?" he asked, extending his arm to allow her to go first when they turned one of the corridors. "Come up with any good ideas yet, I mean?"

"Oh, trying to bring over my friend to your side?" she said, narrowing her eyes at him playfully. "I beg to differ, Derek. She would not betray me!"

She muttered a thank you as she continued down the hallway. "I've just been trying to brainstorm a couple of things. Just a few simple thoughts, really. Like something that could result in a donation for St. Mungo's.. a used-book sale? Even a talent show, hoping that there are not too many people shy of performing."

"Oh yeah? Well I have the Head Boy on my side," he said with a sneaky smile. It was something to joke about in this instance, but he'd been serious when he was expressing his fears to his Uncle about always being known for Ernie's shadow and nothing more. "Blood ties and all you know!"

He listened as she expressed her ideas and nodded, thinking through them a bit more. "I doubt a lot of people would be as interested in the book idea as opposed to something like a talent show. But I like your idea about something resulting in a donation." He was quiet for a few moments as he thought more in depth on this idea. What could they do to raise money?

"What if we did something like a candy drive? Or something. If we spent little money on sweets, people could send them to their friends for a fee and we could use the profits for St. Mungo's," he suggested. "Or something like that," he added with a shrug.

"Oh, and the Head Boy is going allow you passage?" she joked back, playfully smacking his shoulder at the same time. "Somehow I don't think that's about to happen."

This was going to turn out to be more fun than she thought, Tracey realized, as she listened to Derek speak. True, the talent show sounded like a better option than the book sale. Not many people were book lovers as she was.

"That actually sounds good," she mused aloud. "Like.. a small candy telegram."

"He has to. Otherwise it will start a MacMillan-Willoughby family rivalry you see," he remarked pointedly. "I'll try in any case. After all, it's sort of everyone benefit if everyone is well informed of your sick demonic habits," he joked.

"You think so?" he asked, brightening. "It could be fun for the students. You know. People like stuff like that for the most part. I mean, c'mon. It's sweets."

"Careful.. when he finds out there's nothing there, you'll simply be the boy who cried wolf."

Tracey nodded at his next question. It seemed better than her original idea, of course. Maybe he was the sort of guy that didn't give himself enough credit for the brilliant ideas he came up with. (And the same had been said for her too.)

"Yes, exactly. And it would be especially lovely if people are able to give one to their friends, of all houses, of course. It would help a lot!" Her excitement was evident on her grinning face as she thought of it. "We should figure out how it would get our whole Houses involved, you know. Like assignments, perhaps, for some to bake cupcakes or make something if they want."

But just as her excitement appeared on her face, it started to fade slightly. The idea of a telegram was great. But.. what if someone didn't get one at all?

"Yeah, yeah," he said, waving off the thought with his hand.

Nodding, he agreed with her. "I think so too. And that's a really brill idea about the cupcakes! We should do those instead of just candy because that way, we wouldn't hav to shell out any money for supplies. I'm sure the House Elves would be happy to help and they make seriously delicious stuff down there," he said, drifting off at food memories. "But I think you're right about the whole bit about the assign-" He paused when he noted the change in her expression. "What's wrong?" he asked with concern in his tone.

Tracey shrugged, reaching up to the scratch the back of her neck in thought. "It's great, but I'm wondering what if some people don't end up getting any telegram? It would be like a popularity show, and I usually don't like those." Because she felt like she'd be one of those kids that would get very little candy telegrams while the rest of the Slytherins she knew would get a wide variety of them.

A frown formed at her point. "That's true..." he said. Perhaps his idea wasn't such a great one after all in that case. How awful would it have been for someone to be completely excluded while others gloated on how admired they were by their peers. "What if we made sure everyone got at least one?" he asked. But then he refuted the idea." But still, I guess it would be obvious about who would be getting more."

He paused when they got to the dungeons, stalling to hear anymore thoughts Tracey might have on the idea before he left her to her business. "Well, this is it then, hm?" he asked, sliding her bag off of his shoulder and carefully handing it back to her.

"I suppose we can always keep thinking. We have a lot of time, right?" Tracey said, slowing down a little when she saw the door ahead. "I was thinking of something like a fair but the carnival was already done, so.. I don't know."

She stopped walking and took her bag back from him. "Yeah... thank you. For the walk. And holding my bag."

"We do indeed," he agreed. At least that much was true -- they did have time to come up with something that would work for both of their houses. And they could always ask around for feedback from others on the matter, something that could give them an answer they may have missed on their own.

"Of course," he said with a smile. "It was good to meet you. You know, formally," he said, still beaming. "I look forward to working with you, Miss Davis."

"Tracey," she said. "And you too." She reached out to give his hand a little squeeze in gratitude before turning toward the door and speaking the password.

"Let me know if anything comes to you, in the meantime. Goodnight!" She waved as the door opened and then slipped inside.
