Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend!  Next Entry
Who: Kasen and Kevin.
Where: On the steps leading up to the main entrance of the castle.
When: Monday, after Kasen's treasure hunt
What: Gratitude.
Rating: PG-13ish
Status: In progress

Kasen couldn't believe it. She really couldn't. She knew Kevin would insist on giving her a present, of course he would, but she hadn't expected anything like this. The candy, and the book, and the chess pieces, and the necklace. The moment she had finished staring at it, she'd fastened the clasp around her neck and, adjusting the bag on her shoulder that she'd transfigured to hold her gifts, set off to find Kevin.

She didn't have to go far. There he was as she approached the castle, sitting on the steps with the biggest shit-eating grin Kasen had ever seen. Without warning or hesitation, Kasen dropped her bag at the bottom of the steps and threw herself at Kevin, wrapping her arms around his shoulders. "You silly, foolish, ridiculous prat," she whispered, wishing she didn't sound so bloody pathetic. Merlin, why did she feel the need to cry? They were just birthday presents. Brilliant birthday presents, yes, but still presents.

It hadn't been easy for Kevin to keep Kasen from finding out about what he was planning -- even though "planning" was a really relative term, since he'd bought all the stuff in Hogsmeade on Saturday but hadn't decided what to do with everything until Monday morning, in the middle of Charms. Granted, most of the difficulty had been keeping his mouth shut and not telling her that he was planning anything. But, somehow or other, he'd managed to make it the whole weekend and Monday without spilling anything.

He'd been expecting quite a lot of things when Kasen went around, found all her presents (especially the big one) -- but a hug had decidedly not been one of said things. But it couldn't ever be said that Kevin Entwhistle didn't like hugs and, as such, he more than accepted it, wrapping his arms around Kasen's shoulders and giving her a squeeze. "That's my name, don't wear it out?" he offered with a grin and a little laugh. He didn't think there was anything pathetic at all about how Kasen sounded; she was just happy that she'd gotten birthday presents. You were supposed to be happy when you got birthday presents, which was rather why Kevin had gotten presents for Kasen. Besides, it wasn't like she had too many people who were going to remember (most likely including her Danish fiancee), and Kevin wasn't going to let her birthday go without acknowledgment.

"Thank you," Kasen said quietly, closing her eyes and tightening her grip on Kevin. "They're brilliant, everything's brilliant, and the necklace... Thank you." She hadn't expected anything like this for her birthday. The candy, yes, she could expect candy, and the Muggle book, but everything else... "Thank you," she repeated, and nestled her face into the crook of Kevin's neck.

Despite the fact that, being November, the weather was getting fairly cold, Kevin felt oddly... warm with Kasen clutching to him and with her face pressed against his neck. Besides the fact that she was initiating the hug for a change, it felt really nice to have her leaning against his chest. "It's your birthday," he offered, rather lamely and by way of an explanation. Unconsciously, he leaned his head closer to Kasen's, letting his cheek just lightly touch the top of her head. "'s the least I could do."

"Didn't have to," Kasen said quietly. "I mean, my father didn't even send me a gift, not that I expected him to." Especially with the bitch still around. She sighed, slowly relaxing into Kevin's grasp without even realizing she was doing it. He was so comfortable and warm, she couldn't help it. It really wasn't like her to behave this way, not at all, but with everything that was going on with her family... "Thank you, Kevin," she mumbled.

"Did so have to," Kevin insisted gently, rubbing Kasen's back just a little bit. He noticed that she was relaxing a bit, which was hardly normal normal for her... but there really wasn't any cause to go protesting that, as far as he was concerned. Maybe enough bullheaded persistence had finally gotten the point across that Hugs Were Good. "Especially if your father didn't send you anything." What kind of parents could get away without acknowledging their kids' birthdays... the whole idea was beyond Kevin, really. Especially given that Kasen's birthday deserved recognition by somebody.

"It's not a big deal," she insisted quietly. She honestly didn't care if her father bought her another thing as long as she lived. He'd allowed that bitch to take away the people most dear to her without a fight. She didn't want anything he had to give her, unless it was her brothers and sisters. "Anyway," she continued, "Uncle will send me something, I'm sure. He always does. And his gifts have always been better than Father's."
