ball thread!
WHO: Everyone!
WHAT: Celebrating Voldie's demise.
WHEN: Sunday, August 30th
WHERE: A ballroom in London
RATING: PG
STATUS: Pending

Kingsley Shacklebolt had been floored when the idea of his running for Minister had been brought forth. The people will respond to you! had been the running theme in the urgings and, finally, he had relented. He was only the interim for the moment, but no one held any doubt that he'd win in the official election.

The war had been tough; lives had been lost. There was no denying their magical world was in shambles, but Kingsley knew it was also a time for celebration. For this reason, several days before the Hogwarts Express was to pull out of its station, he threw the ball. It was a laid-back affair; people were encouraged to come as they were. Torn robes? Fancy ones? Didn’t matter! It was a time to kick back and relax fully for the first time in years.

To say Tonks was over the moon would be putting it lightly. Voldemort was dead, her parents were safe, and Remus was in love with her...could life GET any better? She didn't think so even if she HAD agreed to a part-time teaching post at Hogwarts. Or, as she put it, 'guilted' in to it by the world's greatest manipulator. Darn that McGonagall. As it were, Tonks was secretly flattered to be considered a good candidate to not only teach, but make a difference in the students' lives. Plus, her daddy was teaching on weekends! Yep, life was fine and dandy.

She entered the ballroom, her short sundress billowing around her thighs. She had said she'd meet Remus there after her shift and quickly scanned the room.

Tonks & Remus

Remus wasn't feeling quite as on top of the world as Tonks was, but he was definitely feeling...well, good. What had only really been a few years had technically been decades for Remus. Missing his friends, worrying over Harry, and then facing his demons with Greyback's pack had proven to be a long and tiring process. Tonks had been the bright spot in it all and he loved that, but even then he was still wary about allowing her in.

Still. Voldemort was dead. Harry was alive, if not perfectly well, and the two of them were going to get a second chance. He had a steady job and a beautiful girlfriend and things really were looking up, weren't they? He'd even splurged for new dress robes for the ball. Well, second-hand, but considerably less shabby than anything already in his wardrobe.

So he stood off to the side, occasionally chatting with fellow Order members and old friends, but keeping a low profile. Fact of the matter was, he still wasn't the most accepted member of their community. When he saw a familiar redhead walking in, however, his entire face lit up and he excused himself from his talk with Sturgis. "And don't we look lovely tonight?" he said softly, slipping up behind Tonks and murmuring in her ear.

To say that Susan was overjoyed and relieved that Voldemort was dead was an understatement. After having her Uncle and Aunt die it was a relief to know he was dead. Now she hoped her parents and her could finally live in peace without having to watch your back for a Death Eater or You-Know-Who.

Her parents and her had all come to the ball together, but they let Susan walk around on her own. Susan was dressed in a white top and a yellow skirt, her hair left down. She looked around and tried to spot either Justin, Hannah, Ernie or even Kevin. She had ran into him two months ago and was interested in seeing him again.

Sally-Anne was anything but happy to be attending this ball. She scowled around the room, crossing her arms over her deep hunter green dress robes. Glaring around her, Sally-Anne's eyes roved over countless beaming, pleased faces. She felt like she scream. None of these gloating people wanted her here. No, she had never supported their side. Turning on her heel, Sally-Anne was intent on escaping the room but stopped short when she saw her mother watching her carefully.

"Going somewhere Lani?" Her mother asked, and Sally-Anne's scowl deepened.

"Of course not, Mother. Just wanting some fresh air." Sally-Anne said softly. Her mother nodded once.

"Good. We might not be happy about certain circumstances, but we must not let it show." Sally-Anne's mother said, fixing her with a cold look before sweeping past her and into the large room. Rolling her eyes, Sally-Anne glanced behind her once before exiting the room.

Teddy thought the whole thing was ridiculous. Why had his mother insisted they make an appearance? His father was dead for Salazar's sake! The last thing Teddy wanted was to celebrate what brought Angus' demise. Still, he understood his mother's point even if he was inwardly acting like a spoiled five-year-old. The Nott name was equated with 'dark' and she didn't wish for her only son to have to live under that stigma for the rest of his life. Nonetheless, Teddy felt just as he did at school --- invisible. He leaned against a wall watching his mother glide through the room making small talk. It was a miracle she could walk, never mind talk, after Angus' murder, but Teddy supposed that was what the saying 'life goes on' meant.

Teddy & Hannah

Hannah was glad she'd been able to make the ball. At first, she thought her father would put his foot down. But with Miriam's help, she'd convinced him that she was of age as a witch, that she was nearly of age as a muggle, and that with all of wizarding society around, that she'd be perfectly safe. She'd dressed up, she'd done her hair, and she'd stepped into the ballroom with all the confidence she could muster.

But now, surrounded by people who'd actually helped to win the war and people who hadn't been mostly separated from wizarding society for the last year, Hannah felt incredibly out of place. Oh, she knew her friends still cared about her. But they'd all gone on with their lives and she...well, hadn't.

She was incredibly distracted when she backed into a wall, ready to lean on it, and discovered someone had beaten her there. "Oh, shoot," Hannah wailed, humiliated. "I wasn't paying attention, I'm so sorry!" She recognized the boy almost at once, but it took her a second to match the name. Nott. Theodore Nott, a Slytherin if she wasn't mistaken.

Ernest MacMillan was quite relieved that the war had ended as it had. Granted, he was pure and not truly considered a 'traitor' by most other pure-bloods, but he didn't agree with 'mudblood' ideals and would have lived a miserable existence in the event of Harry Potter being defeated. Still, Ernest, a former Hufflepuff, felt guilty about a great deal of what had occurred. Namely, he hated that a young boy like Potter had to fight the war at all. However, besides that truth, he felt horrible for writing off children such as Draco Malfoy, Pansy Parkinson, and Theodore Nott. He knew the children from their youth and cursed himself for not trying harder with them.

Still, it was a time to celebrate and so Ernest did his best to block out his guilt. He kissed his wife's cheek before leaving her to chat with some mates. He started around the room, looking for someone to talk to.

No matter what Pansy thought about Hufflepuffs laughing it up and having a good time, Zach was doing anything but. Sure, fine, whatever, Saint Potter and his crew of unwashed, red-haired, buck-toothed bitch cohorts had pulled a miraculous victory out of their collective arsehole and, in so doing, had destroyed You Know Who, blah blah blah, all that noise. Zach hated all that noise. He hated hearing it, he hated listening to it at ALL, and, above everything else, he absolutely LOATHED the fact that, no matter what he did, he'd never, ever been able to get away from listening to stories about how completely and utterly brilliant Saints Potter, Granger, Weasley, and Weasley the Female were. And what did THEY do? Save the entire Wizarding world? Bollocks -- they saved the entire Wizarding world on a pretty damn regular basis; the fact that they’d apparently done so “forever” this time meant absolutely nothing, considering that this was just a bloody repeat act for them.

But, really, Zach was just in a right fucking strop because he hadn’t been able to do anything to help anybody. As soon as Dad had caught whiff of his desire to try to help any sort of positive efforts, it had been, “Pack your trunk, Zacharias; we’re going to Russia, regardless of what you think about this. …No, you don’t have a choice and no, I don’t care what you think. Pack your damn trunk.” And then it had been off to fucking Moscow, which, all things considered, had not been that horrible; at least, it hadn't done anything wrong, besides be in entirely the wrong place at entirely the wrong time with entirely the wrong Zacharias Isaac Smith being dragged into its walls. Being at this stupid ball only served to remind Zach that he'd done nothing. While other people had been fighting and dying in the name of something worthwhile, he'd been playing Quidditch, partying, and drinking Sergei's dad under the table for no reason other than to say that he could out-drink a man who had one inch, thirty-five years, and sixty-five pounds on him. He also could not manage to forget the physical ramifications of how he'd been living, which he hadn't even been aware of until Mum had flipped right out and dragged him to Saint Mungo's because he was thin enough to make her worry. His dress robes were brand new, and he'd wasted an afternoon getting them fitted, just because he'd lost a little bit of weight -- since when was 25 pounds that much? Especially at Zach's height? Honestly, he hadn't even noticed it until Mum had -- and Mum was blowing everything too far out of proportion.

It wasn't fair, Zach thought to himself as he hung out in one of the ballroom's corners, attempting to avoid being noticed by anyone who could have held him accountable for anything. This ball was completely idiotic , the absolute last place in the world he wanted to be was right here, and Mum was still convinced that he had some sort of disease or other, so why couldn't he have bloody called in sick?

Luna always liked parties. She especially loved them for good causes. She didn’t get invited to many but she loved them never the less. There was something about dressing up and being able to dance around that tended to make her excited. She enjoyed inviting new people and talking about their exploits. She was also excited about the prospect of seeing friends. She and her father managed to get in from their summer trip only hours before. Yugoslavia had been magnificent and they’d even managed to spot a pear-headed titosplog. It spontaneously combusted when they tried to take a picture though. They didn’t need pictures to know what they’d seen. It really had been a fantastic trip. She’d arrived late to the party wearing orange and yellow robes that seemed to change in color with the reflection of light. They were as vibrant as her personality. She didn’t wear outlandish earrings and her hair actually looked semi-tamed instead of blown to pieces by the wind. She was chomping at the bit to see who all she could find there. She also really rather wanted to dance.

Sienna was forced to go to the dumb ball, she wasn't exactly the most excited person at the place. If it was celebration something she actually wanted to celebrate that'd be one thing. This however was a completely different thing. A celebration she'd rather not be apart of.

Sienna was standing next to her father with her arms by her side. Dressed to perfection the young Slytherin merely stood waiting to see if something more interesting would happen... After all at the moment nothing worth her time was happening.

Ginny didn't really want to be there. She was usually one for a party and all, and this was certainly a cause to celebrate, but it didn't really feel like celebrating when there were so many people missing. Plus, she'd been forced into heels and some Godric-awful dressrobes that weren't particularly comfortable or attractive looking. Not to mention the fact that she and Harry still hadn't really talked about anything and things were still awkward there and...bloody hell.

She would've much rather have been at home that evening. Even if was just to pretend to pack for school and all. But she was there and she was supposed to be pretending to be having a brilliant time. Or something like that.

She was lingering near the punch bowl, watching the action surrounding her. She was trying to decide who was actually happy to be there and who was simply putting on a show. It seemed to be about half and half, though she had strong suspicions that the Ministry officials were smiling just a bit too widely and laughing much too loudly at jokes that weren't particularly amusing. She wondered if that was simply them being hopeful that things were finally, blessedly over, or if they generally acted like prats at these sorts of fuctions.

Katie caught site of someone she considered to be family near the punch bowl. She gave a soft smirk as she headed towards the best red head she knew! Katie didn't really feel like being there, but it was one of the things that she had to go to. She didn't mind celebrating, she just liked smaller celebrations. Places were it was just friends and family, not so many people.

She did however feel a little bit better when she saw Ginny. When she got closer to her. "You look excited." She teased with a friendly smile. Katie was never good at hiding her worry when it was around people who actually knew her. She didn't even bother trying though. "Are you okay?" She asked softly.

Samantha was of course happy that Voldemort had been defeated, but that didn't mean she was overly thrilled about attending the ball. She had never really liked social settings such as this. Maybe sometimes, but this seemed a little forced and she could tell that a lot of the people in attendance didn't want to be there and were merely doing it for show. Whether it was because they had lost one too many friends or family members during the war or they had been on the opposing side, there were many in the crowd that seemed to be hiding unhappiness under their smiles. Samantha herself would rather have preferred to be at home reading, or possibly wandering around outside, but unfortunately she had been coerced into attendance.

For the first half hour she had wandered around aimlessly, mingling halfheartedly with fellow Ravenclaws she had seen, as well as other sixth years she had become somewhat fairly well acquainted with over the years. Then she had spent some time outside, first exchanging words with a rather unhappy Pansy Parkinson, then just meandering around losing herself in her thoughts. Now she was back inside the ball, standing somewhat near the wall, watching the others with mild interest. She really wished she were home reading.

Mandy wasn't to thrilled to be going to a ball, truth be told Mandy had never been a huge fan of crowded places so being at this ball did make the young Ravenclaw slightly uncomfortable. The only positive thing she could think of was that hopefully a lot of her friends would be around. So maybe then she could break away from her parents who also decided they should come.

Currently, Charles and Melania Brocklehurst were speaking with another couple, Mandy was walking back from getting some punch when she felt herself accidently bumping into someone. Instantly she became red in the face as she brushed strands of hair away from her eyes. "Very sorry, I really should learn to pay more attention when I walk."

Lavender LOV LOV LOVED celebrations, and this was one of the best ones yet. Sure some of it was sort of sad to think about, but the good side had won, and they were all about to go back to school soon and not as much fear was in the air! Lavender couldn't believe how amazing that felt. She was also just excited to dress up. She had on a silver dress, that she knew perfectly well she looked dashing in. Besides she would never wear anything that wasn't dashing.

She'd lost track of her parents, and her friends.. But she didn't mind. The young witch was standing next to the dance floor, secretly hoping that a very good looking boy would come and ask her to dance. It was silly, but she did love to dance, and she wanted to show off that she'd learned a few new moves over the past week. Yes she did force her parents to take her to a few classes... shh.

Lisa was glad that her mother found someone else to talk to. She had spent what seemed liked a long time listening to her mother talk about the celebrations after the first war. Lisa had gotten tired of hearing the stories, after all she had heard them like a million times since You-Know-Who was gone for good. It was a relief to Lisa, and of course most everyone else, that You-Know-Who was gone. There were a lot of people here to celebrate that fact and why come if they didn't like the situation? Lisa was sure the adults cared more about this than she did, even though she could be considered an adult in the wizarding world. As she walked around, she saw other students that she recognised, most of them here because of their parents like her. Even if she didn't care to really be there, Lisa was determined that she should enjoy herself while she was there.

This event was a load of bull and that last thing she wanted to do was go pretend to be peachy with a bunch of uppity mud bloods. She was still mourning friends and family friends who had perished. Why did she want to go to this event? She wore black because this wasn’t a celebration for her. Her mother had attempted to talk her into wearing a bright robin’s egg blue robes but she’d been rather insistent that she wasn’t going at all if she couldn’t dress herself. She wasn’t seven years old after all. She entered behind her parents by a few steps sticking close for the first round of hello and fake conversations about ‘how wonderful’ it all was. When she was near nausea over it all she slipped out through the doors where people were allowed to catch fresh air, smoke or whatever they liked to do. She wasn’t much of a smoker though she did enjoy the occasional cloves if with the right party. She wasn’t in the mood for that though. She decided she was going to stay out there like an outcast as long as it took. She didn’t want to be a part of this.

A part of her wondered if the Malfoys would show. She knew a few of the others were certainly coming. She doubted she’d see Mrs. Goyle. She was inconsolable still over Greg’s death and with her husband in Azkaban it didn’t exactly mean cheer. The Crabbes were in the same boat. There were others that crossed her mind. She couldn’t help but be a touch bitter thinking about Ernie Macmillian. She’d heard he’d managed to get Head Boy and she was sure he was just loving it. She felt bitter just thinking about him and all those dirty Hufflepuffs laughing it up and having a good time. This wasn’t how things were supposed to be. Her side was supposed to have won. She and her friends were supposed to be the ones laughing it up and having a good time. She hated Mudbloods but the blood traitors only served to make her more upset. That was what he was in her eyes.

“Complete bollocks,” she muttered to herself inhaling the cool air and exhaling.

Samantha stepped outside for a breath of fresh air. Her nose wrinkled the instant the smell of smoke hit her when she breathed deeply. Ignoring the tickling feeling in her nose, she walked forward smiling softly to a few fellow students she knew. Her eyes fell on Pansy Parkinson standing alone, wearing black. Samantha's mouth twitched slightly. She was certain Pansy wore it as a sign of her unhappiness over the celebration raging inside. The idea of actually attempting to create conversation with the Slytherin flitted in Samantha's head for a moment, but she decided against it. Sure, she felt that everyone had the potential to be friendly in them, but somehow she doubted Pansy would be willing to speak civilly with her.

Just as she turned to go back inside, Samantha heard Pansy mutter, "Complete bollocks." She didn't know why, but that phrase alone changed her mind and Samantha threw caution to the wind. If all she received were scathing remarks and cruelty, that was fine with her, but at least she'd made the effort to be friendly.

"What's complete bollocks? The celebration?" Samantha asked, stepping up to Pansy's side. A slight nervous feeling hit her. It wasn't as though she had never spoken to Pansy. They were both from Pureblood families and their paths had crossed before.

Sod this party. And sod Father for forcing her to attend with them. It just wasn't enough for him to ask her to call that bitch "Mother," no, he just had to insist they all attend the ball "as a family." Some family they were.

Kasen had slipped away at the first opportunity, pulling one of the five gillyweed cigarettes she's prepared beforehand. She'd obviously figured right that it would take a lot of the stuff to get through this bloody party alive. She lit up and took a drag, tucking herself further into a dark corner outside the entrance to the ball. Closing her eyes, she sighed and took another hit, letting the smoke linger and soak into her lungs before blowing it away.

Honestly, Justin wanted to attend the ball. He'd looked out of the window after unpacking to see the owl with the announcement sitting patiently on the sill. The fact that everything was over didn't even hit until he'd read the announcement through five times, and he had to sit heavily on the edge of his bed to keep from falling over. That was it. You-Know-Who was dead and the war was over.

He'd almost run downstairs right then to ask his parents if he could go to the ball, but he stopped himself just in time. God, he couldn't go. He couldn't go to the ball because they didn't know. And he couldn't tell them about it, not now that everything was over.

Sighing, Justin sat back down on his bed, staring at the announcement for another long moment before digging his keepsake box from under the loose floorboard beside his bed and tucking the announcement inside. At least he could still go back to school.

Alicia thought they had done a brilliant job of throwing a party and being one who so loved social events and was always the first one to sign up to attend, she had been enjoying herself. It was mainly because the atmosphere had seemed to completely have changed, not only in the ballroom, but throughout the rest of the Wizarding World as well. There was a sense of calm, no more of that misery or foreboding that seemed to linger for ages. And to anyone, that was a pleasing thing.

Though she had been enjoying herself, Alicia decided to step out and get some fresh air. Part of the reason was on account of the fact that she had been searching for her friends, but without much luck. At times, she felt older than most who were present and yet, in a different coversation or a different group with the adults, Ali felt very young and out of place. Thus, she was desperately hoping to run into someone she was close enough with sooner rather than later, but wasn't making it a priority. Instead, she was enjoying the warm weather and the cheery mood surrounding the place.
