Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend!  Next Entry
Who: Snape and Harry
What: Snape comes to find Harry in the Gryffindor Common Room
Where: The Gryffindor Common Room
When: Sunday evening
Rating: PG, PG-13?

The Gryffindor common room was fairly busy this evening. Instead of his usual chair by the fire, which others gave him gladly, Harry was curled up in a chair in the corner, looking about twelve years old from his size. He had borrowed a book from Hermione, having taken to the habit of reading out of a need to just get away from people. He was still feeling rather peaky and feverish, but he hadn't vomited since yesterday.

He wasn't sure where Hermione and Ron were, but he was certain they were not in the same place. He frowned at his book, ignoring the story. They weren't getting on well. He knew Ron wanted to give Hermione space, but he didn't really think that's what Hermione needed. Hermione was suffering in silence, something Harry knew all about. He wasn't sure how to help her.

He closed the book and rested his head against the back of the chair. He had a funny little feeling in his stomach. He hadn't written back to Snape on Friday morning, and he hadn't heard anything from the man. He had expected a terse note in the journals, but no - nothing. He wondered if, perhaps, the man had finally given up on him.

Snape had a "no good rotten weekend. First, the blasted Harry Potter had taken his emotions on a roller coaster ride via the journals Thursday evening and then Narcissa had owled him to tell him she was leaving Lucius. Granted, Severus didn't really believe she meant for good, but it was still a concern given Draco's mental state. Oh, sure, his godson swore he was fine, but Severus knew better. Thus, he had hurried to Narcissa, letting her spill all her anger over Lucius and Draco's damaged relationship to him. He had hoped it would be enough to change her mind, but, in pure drama queen fashion, Narcissa had made a sweeping announcement about going to stay with Theodore's mother until further notice. Snape had tried again to reason with her, but that blasted woman would not be talked sense to! Finally, Snape had given up and returned to Hogwarts. He was more than a little bitter about not getting work done, but there was still more 'emotional shite' to attend to. Since he didn't know what to say to Draco just then, he decided to focus on Lily's brat. Rather than writing an entry in which Harry could ignore him, Snape stormed to the place he hated most --- Gryffindor. Sweeping inside, he ignored the gasps, walking straight to Harry's seat and whacking him across the legs with his wand. "Mr. Potter."

Harry had looked up when he heard strange mutterings and whisperings, and had actually dropped his book in shock. He didn't even have time to flinch away from Snape before he had smacked him on the legs. "Ow!" he said reproachfully.

He stared up at Snape with his mouth hanging slightly open. "Professor?" He stood abruptly, putting some distance between himself and Snape. Aware of the entire common room staring at him, Harry blushed until the fever flush was hidden behind his embarrassment. As usual, he resorted to cheek. "You know, sir, the Slytherin common room is down in the dungeons."

The potions master didn't flinch at Potter's disrespect. "Five points," he replied softly, but sternly. He noted that Harry moved away from him, but he was more than used to students doing so. On some level, it did bother him, especially coming from the Boy Who Lived, but Severus still believed fear could do a student well. It had certainly put a fire under some in the past. "I suggest you lead me somewhere you are comfortable or we will be having the discussion here."

Harry's jaw set and he stared up at Snape for a moment. He took a breath, and, without a word, started toward the portrait, weaving around the Gryffindors. He climbed out with the practice of six years. Upon exiting the common room, he continued walking and finally came to a corridor where he leaned against the wall, his arms crossed.

"What is this discussion?"

Pleased that the brat actually did as told for once, Snape followed without further comment. He didn't enjoy spending time in Gryffindor, but he held little choice in the matter. Like it or not, Severus' heart still held a place for Lily, and, in turn, her child. Yes, he looked like the arse known as James Potter, but if eyes truly were the window to the soul…

Well. Enough of that thinking. He regarded Harry coldly when they finally paused. "I believe I told you to do something, Mr. Potter."

Harry fought the urge to look down at his feet. Instead, he looked down the hall. "I know you did. Sir. I was-" Passed out? Sick as a dog? Sleeping with his head on the toilet? "-busy." He hunched in on himself. He felt the need to not appear so helpless. "I can take care of myself, sir. I always have." When he was sick at the Dursleys, he'd hardly had Aunt Petunia tucking him in and bringing him soup.

Severus gritted his teeth. He found himself doing that a lot around this one. Oh, Harry wouldn't be able to see it as Snape was an expert at keeping his face expressionless (well, save anger when he wanted to scared students) but, nonetheless, the professor hated that Harry had that affect over him. "You needed that potion. Why must you act so foolishly, Harry?" Allowing the student that little bit of familiarity always took effort, but Severus was trying in the aftermath of the war. As much as he could, anyway.

Harry shrugged, schooling his face into a grim resemblance of nonchalance. "Look - sir." He finally raised his eyes to meet Snape's. "I get it. I get that you're a teacher and you're supposed to look after your students. I get that you probably feel like you've got some responsibility for me, or something, since you were friends with my mum." He looked somewhat uncomfortable. "But you don't need to watch out for me. It's not like I'm -" necessary? valuable? "- a child! I can take care of myself!"

"Do watch your tone, Potter." Gone was the forced gentleness (if one could ever deem Snape gentle that is) and its place was annoyance. It was bad enough that Severus cared without being rebuked. It rather felt like all those years all over again. "Accepting a potion has nothing to do with acting like a child. That's absurd. Need I remind you that your dear friend Lupin accepts it every month?" He shook his head, exasperation flickering in his dark eyes.

Harry fisted his robes. Watch his tone? He'd gone to war, he'd nearly died, he'd watched people die - why was he still a child to these people? To this man, who knew what he had gone through - why was he back at this school, as if he was just another student, as if he could carry on.

He deigned not to reply, instead staring at a point across the hallway where there was a crack in the wall. He could imagine that he was small enough to go through that crack, hide away until everyone forgot about him. He would wait.

He was so warm.

It wasn't that Snape thought Harry a child. Not exactly. Severus understood the boy couldn't just return to life as it was, but that didn't mean he would rest until Harry managed to find a way past all the tragedy. Snape had spent his life in bitterness; he was unhappy and didn't wish that for Harry. Or Draco. His boys…they deserved better.

Snape blinked at that. Salazar in hell. Bad enough he cared for Harry without feeling possessive on top of it. Life really hated him didn't it? It was determined to make him suffer; Severus just knew it!

"Harry…speak."

Harry realized, all of a sudden, that he had seen that crack in the wall before. Of course, Hogwarts had many cracks - it was an old castle. But he could recall it as if he was there. He had been standing here - right here! The crack in the wall was from a spell that had just missed him. He could hear the screams of students. He closed his eyes very tightly.

He started to breathe very rapidly, and he forgot that Snape was even there. He began to slide down the wall.

Oh for Salazar's sake. Just what Snape needed. Growling, he reached out to keep Harry from falling to the floor. In the process, he had Harry leaning into his chest, much like he was hugging the damn boy. Merlin hated him. Hated. If there had ever been any doubt, being stuck with Harry in the middle of an episode was all the proof Severus needed.

"Potter! Harry!" Severus sighed impatiently, dropping to the floor with Harry. What the heck? Was in a trance --- oh, bloody hell, he was. "Potter! Do you hear me?"

Harry became aware of his surroundings as soon as he was on the floor. He couldn't control his hyperventilation, and the anxious images assaulted him. He gasped for air, his eyes flew open. "I'm going to be sick," he moaned. Really, he felt more like he was going to die. He rose on legs that barely supported him. The last thing he wanted was to be sick all over Snape.

He regarded the hallway around him, determining where he could find a loo, and he went in that direction. "Don't follow me," he mumbled, though he realized Snape would.

Severus wouldn't have liked knowing Harry realized he'd follow. Mostly because that could mean the brat understood he cared and Snape really and truly didn't want that. As it was, Snape did follow him. "How often does this happen?" He stood back, worry tugging his heart though he remained outwardly neutral in tone and stance.

"It's nothing," Harry muttered, wiping at his mouth. He met Snape outside of one of the stalls, after flushing the contents of his stomach down the loo. "I'm going to go back, now," he informed him uncomfortably.

Snape sighed, not even caring if Harry noted how irritated he was with the whole situation. Oh, not that Harry was sick, but that the boy was acting so stubborn and foolish. Stupid Gryffindors, Snape swore.

"Will you take a potion? It's really rather...a small thing to prevent needless suffering."

Harry leaned somewhat on the cool bathroom wall, taking a deep, steadying breath. He shifted uncomfortably under Snape's gaze, which always had made him feel as if the man could see right through him.

"I think I'll just go back to my dorm, sir," he murmured. "I've already got it up."
