Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend!  Next Entry
Who: Ted and Draco
When: Late afternoon
What: Manly bonding, yes.
Where: The Tonks residence

Ted, to be quite truthful, was a little ecstatic about the newest addition to the family. Yes, of course it was extended family but weren't they all extended family in the end? And yes, Draco was young. But people made mistakes. There was no going back, so why should the elder man be dowdy and admonish the younger man about it? The way that Ted Tonks figured it, Draco had been acting as a young man for quite some while. And he was doing a fine thing, stepping up to those responsibilities. A mighty fine thing.

Besides, once Draco held that child in his arms for the first time, there would be no turning back. Even twenty-something years later. Even if the child was a handful and a half. All this thinking of children put a smile on his face, recalling when Dora was a baby. It was part nostalgia and part man's man time that caused him to extend the invitation out to Draco this particular late afternoon. Andi and Dora were out and about, which left poor Ted on his own.

And what did Ted do while on his own? Cook, of course. He returned to a favoured food for the comfort aspect of things. Brunch. Breakfast foods were his favourite, so there was bacon sizzling already and he was now chopping up onions and peppers for the omelettes that he intended to make. Sure, he could do it by magic (and the dishes most certainly would be done that way) but there was something about the action of cooking that he enjoyed. So, the afternoon was planned. A good hearty lunch and conversation. Perhaps even, if Draco accepted it, a word of advice or two.

Draco had become more used to visiting with Ted though stepping foot into the Tonks' residence was still a wee bit awkward. It was strange to see their photographs and smell their scent when all those things should have been familiar, but were still fairly foreign. Nonetheless, Draco was growing rather fond of that small family and while he might not have admitted it in words, he surely didn't turn down a chance to visit with them (and Ted's food).

He stepped through the floo, dusting himself off. "Uncle?" He called. He breathed in the scent of bacon and eggs and let himself imagine what it would have been like to visit in such a manner as a little boy.

"In the kitchen, my boy." He called out after hearing Draco down the hall. And then Ted was peeking his head out of the doorway that led into the kitchen, offering a smile. "Your aunt and cousin have left me alone, I'm afraid. Which means that I have to find something to keep myself out of trouble."

He motioned with his head that Draco come into the kitchen itself. It was always a safe area, with Dora having stayed in there and talking with whichever parent was with her. It led to honest conversations, which Ted was sure Molly Weasley could attest to.

"Sit down, please. I'm nearly done. And how are you, Draco?"

Draco returned his uncle's smile though it was more hesitant. Ted reminded him of Angus in many ways which could be difficult at times. Still, Ted was more relaxed than the boy's slain uncle had ever been and that was something Draco appreciated. He was someone Draco could talk to without the fear of lecture or reprimand. Ted, ironically, seemed to accept him for who he was. "Alright," he replied. He didn't sit, but stood awkwardly. "May I help?" He wouldn't know the first way to aid Ted, but he could try, right?

Ted had a habit of taking people as they were. It was probably the trait that ultimately put him in the Hufflepuff house over Ravenclaw. Looking over his shoulder, since he had gone back to chopping things up, the older man thought about it for a moment.

While he had been won over by Draco and Narcissa, he too had some hesitancy here and there. What would seem so normal for him could be an insult to Draco. "Would you mind at all cracking the eggs into the bowl I have there? We'll need..four." Two eggs for each omelette, Ted decided with a nod.

Draco nodded. "Course, Uncle." He was surprised to find the term slipped so much easier than it had at the start. He located the eggs and separated four from the dozen before picking one up to "crack" as Ted put it. He moved it around in his fingers, finally deciding to just squeeze it. "Er..." Somehow, he didn't think it was right since the juice was oozing out of his hand and the shells were slipping into the bowl.

He was finishing up with some chopping, habit making him place the knife carefully away in the sink, and turned curiously at the noise that Draco made. A quiet chuckle escaped as he went to grab a towel and handed it to his nephew. "Ah, I should have warned you. Eggs are temperamental about how they're cracked."

Taking up one of the others, he waited for Draco to clean up his hands, fully intending on showing him how to crack an egg properly. "The spells for cooking are relatively easy, but I like the feeling of accomplishing something by hand every now and again." Once Draco was ready, Ted rapped the egg slightly on the counter twice..enough to get a crack in it..and positioned his fingers so that they could break the shell open, allowing everything to drop right into the bowl. "It takes a while. Professional chefs practice for years and still things go awry."

Draco wouldn't know the spells for cooking either, but he didn't fill Ted in on that secret. It wasn't like the boy had ever thought he'd need such things, after all.

He felt slightly ridiculous, but accepted the towel with as much dignity as possible. "Thank you," he muttered. Raw eggs definitely didn't smell as good as cooked ones. "Well, hand it over for another try then." He had no intentions on becoming one of those professional chefs, but he wanted to impress Ted all the same.

Dutifully handing over the egg, Ted moved about the kitchen to prepare something else while waiting. That way he was close by in case Draco needed something, but wasn't hovering over him. Goodness knew that he hated that when his mother was teaching him how to cook.

"So how are you feeling about things, Draco?" It was sort of a tester question. Though Ted was concerned, he didn't want to proverbially hover over this subject either. "How is Miss Parkinson doing?"

Draco had expected the inevitable question, but that didn't mean he wasn't tired of answering it. How was he? Scared shitless. Still, he was excited too and he didn't want anyone dampening his enthusiasm with statistics on teenage parents and children. He might have been 18, but he had also seen hell...a hell he was determined that his baby would never ever see so long as Draco held breath in his body.

"Miss Parkinson?" Draco raised his eyebrows, snickering. "You are about to be related, Uncle. I think first names might be appropriate."

"Ah, so very true. Pansy, then. How is she doing?" Ted noticed that Draco hadn't answered the question about how he was doing and smiled a little because of it. It was difficult for men in general to admit that they were deathly afraid of bringing a fragile little person in the world. Difficult more, he suspected, for Draco and others like him.

"I was beside myself when Andromeda told me that she was pregnant." He stated with a fond smile, "Ecstatic..but with the distinct feeling that I might be more prepared to have a drink and a rousing song with a group of trolls."

Despite himself, Draco laughed as he finished the very important task of breaking eggs. He crossed to the sink in order to wash his hands and when the water was turned on, he muttered something about trolls being easier to deal with.

Figuring the eggs to be done, Ted turned once again and took the bowl of eggs, whipping it together so that he could make the omelettes. "I have ham, cheese, onions, and peppers. What sort of combination do you want?"

"And, to be truthful, Draco..that particular feeling doesn't go away. It's always a bit of that deliriously happy emotion mixed with just delirious emotion." He said truthfully. There was no use lying about it, after all. No point in saying that he'd get over that pang of worry.

Draco shrugged at the egg quandary. His appetite was waning as he thought about being responsible for a tiny little being. He had never taken care of himself so what made him think he could properly look after a baby? "How do you..." He paused. "I want to be different from my father."

The shrug was taken into consideration, so Ted decided on his own what sort of omelette to make for Draco and was soon putting the eggs in the heated up pan. He glanced over briefly at Draco's statement and offered an assuring smile.

"I'd imagine that the fact that you want to be makes you different already, Draco." Honestly, all these years married to Andromeda and Ted still didn't have much insight into pureblood families. However, he did notice that children emulated their parents for better or for worse. And that Draco wanted to be his own man was commendable.

"You're going to make mistakes." He warned the younger man right then and there, "And sometimes you won't realise it until later. But you'll learn. And as long as you're there for them, they learn to gloss over those mistakes or embrace them. Same with a wife."

Draco laughed at that. "Even wives, yeah? So, tell me, how do you manage to get out of the dog house?" Draco had never actually knew anyone with a real dog house, but the expression always appealed to him. He had read it when he was about 10 and it just stuck. He half wondered if Narcissa ever made Lucius sleep on the couch. He had never seen it, but it was also a really large house.

Ted laughed and started adding the rest of the things to the cooking egg. "Getting out? Sometimes that's easy. Staying out? Not so." Added with a genial smile as he flipped over the omelette. "Get your fill of bacon, your omelette will be ready in a moment." He paused then, thinking about it.

"Cooking might help." Added with another smile, "Of course, being genuinely apologetic and willing to work things out helps as well."

Draco picked up a piece of bacon, chewing it thoughtfully as he sat at the kitchen table. It was a different experience. In his upbringing, elves had cooked and when the food was finished, he sat down with his parents in the dining room. However, it felt nice to be taking part in the meal, even if his role had been small. It felt warm...like a real family. Draco loved his parents dearly, but warmth, especially from Lucius, had been lacking. "I suppose you'll have to teach me more cooking..." He searched for the right word. "Things then." He sipped some juice, watching as his uncle bounced around the kitchen. He was clearly in his element there. "How do you coddle a child while being strict too?" He asked suddenly. Ted might have been the only man in his life who would know...

Coming over to the kitchen table with the pan, Ted slid the omelette onto the plate and motioned for Draco to dig in. It wouldn't be too long until Ted was sitting with him, after all. "Whatever you'd like to learn, Draco." Replied with a smile, "Sometimes it's just nice to offer something that came from you." Draco and Pansy might have house elves again. But it was a good thing to have up your sleeve. Just in case.

And then he was asking the harder questions, which Ted smiled wryly at. "To be quite truthful, Dora got away with a few more things than perhaps she ought have." Ted Tonks was wrapped around his daughter's little finger, and he knew it. He was wrapped around his wife's too, but that was neither here nor there. He chuckled and thought about it. "Remind them that you love them. Doesn't have to be verbally all the time, though that's nice too. But just doing things with them. Sharing what you enjoy with them. It reminds children that you want them in your life. And when you do have to be stern, they'll ultimately remember that." He paused, "After crying or being incredibly angry."

Draco already had his house elves and had no plans on freeing them so he wasn't too worried about learning immediately, but it was something to consider, especially if it meant getting more advice from Ted.

He bit into his omelet. "This is good, Uncle." While he didn't comment on the words of wisdom, he was thinking them over. Like the food, he needed to digest it.

"Why, thank you. It's a favourite to make." He smiled jovially, noting that Draco had no more questions for the moment. That was fine. Ted really just wanted to open the door in reminder that the younger man could ask whatever he wanted.

Having finished making his, Ted gave it a flip onto his plate and grabbed a piece of bacon to munch on. Then he sat across from Draco and dug in as well. It was a comfortable sort of quiet, he hoped.
