Justin doesn't like food ([info]goldfinch) wrote in [info]resurrectio_rpg,

Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend!  Next Entry
Who: Justin and Jamie
What: Justin emos over Ernie's reply to his apology.
When: Sunday, after Justin and Ernie's conversation over his journal.
Where: The Owlry
Rating: PGish for now
Status: Complete

Justin curled up in one of the windows of the owlry, arms wrapped around his legs, face pressed into his knees. God, what was he supposed to do now? His best friend hated him. How else could he explain their brief conversation in his journal? That was it. Ernie hated him. Fuck. A broken noise echoed through the owlry, and it took Justin a moment to realize that it had come from him. Fuckfuckityfuck. God, he should have just gone to the infirmary like he'd planned. ...Zach was probably wondering where he was, what was taking him so long, but Justin couldn't bring himself to move from the window where he was sitting, curled up as tightly as he could as he cried into his knees.

Jamie's mind was completely in the clouds as she bounded up the steps to the Owlry. The ink was still fresh on the letter she had scribbled to her Grandmother in Charms, and she held the paper out to catch the breeze as she topped the staircase. Whipping the large oaken door open, she rushed over to a particularly hearty looking tawny and fed him a sunflower seed from her pocket. As she quickly folded and tied the letter to the owl's leg, she began to hum absentmindedly to herself.
After seeing the owl off, she turned around and stifled a gasp. A hunched over figure in to far window had startled her-- had he been in here when she had first entered? She stood for a moment, staring at his back, until a weak sob reached her ears. Impulsively, she moved up to him as softly as she could and placed her hands gently on his shoulder. "Shhh... it's okay baby. It will be okay." Jamie began to rub his back, completely unaware of any strangeness about her affection toward this boy she barely knew.

Justin jerked in surprise when hands suddenly touched his back, and he whipped his head up immediately, wiping insistently at his eyes. He wasn't crying. Not at all. He lowered his feet to the floor and shifted slightly away from Jamie's hands, sniffing once. "I'm fine," he croaked quietly, clearing his throat and running his hands through his hair. "'s fine."

"Oh yes, you look very fine to me." Jamie smiled sweetly, skeptically but encouragingly, trying to meet Justin's eyes. Her heart was racing-- she was completely embarrassed for having intruded upon this space, this time that was so vulnerable to this boy, but her heart ached with his pain. She took the step forward to close the space his shifting had created and bent her knees slightly to bring her small self to his sitting level. "You don't have to be ashamed about crying. Goodness, if I had a knut for everytime I've cried myself to sleep, I'd have more money than every player on the Chudley Cannons combined!" Lame, definitely, but anything to get him to smile.

Justin managed only a flash of a smile before it disappeared again, keeping his eyes locked on his hands as he picked at a hole in his jeans. "Do I even know you?" he asked quietly, trying to keep the focus of the sudden conversation off of himself. He didn't need to talk about this. Talking about it wouldn't do anything. Apologizing hadn't done anything after all. What good would talking to someone do?

She had caught the flash. She was hopeful. His question made her smile in spite of herself. How ridiculous of her, he didn't even know her name... "Jamie. Ravenclaw. We had Potions together a few years back, but I sat in the way front of the class. You and Ernie sat in the back, so we never were properly introduced." She immediately flushed. Wow Jamie, way to sound like a complete creep. Oh well.

"Oh," Justin mumbled, tugging at one of the loose threads hanging from the hole in his jeans. "...'s nice to meet you," he finally offered after a moment, glancing up at her briefly. "Guess you already know who I am, then."

Jamie noticed immediately how red his eyes were. Oh, he had been crying hard. She continued to smile, in hopes of winning him over. "What can I say, I thought you were cute," she commented, playfully. Jamie began to kick a patch of straw away from a spot on the floor near to Justin's legs, clearing a place for herself. Her robes could sustain a little owl mess-- this was more important. "You're a lot cuter when you smile though," she tested, averting her eyes to her work so as not to make him uncomfortable by her gentle prodding. "Is there... anything I can do? I'm a brilliant listener." Folding herself up, Jamie sat cross-legged on the cold stonework and looked up at him, questioning.

God. Justin couldn't help the faint blush that stole across his cheeks, and he lowered his eyes again, picking back at the thread. What was he supposed to say to that? It was one thing for Zach to go blurting out in his journal, while he was high, that Justin was a catch. Having someone actually call him cute to his face was something completely different. Justin finally opted to just let it slide, shrugging his shoulders as he focused on the question. "...Not much of anything anyone can do, really," he replied quietly. "'less you can turn back time an' make me act like less of a complete git."

Jamie's mind raced with her unspoken hypotheses. It must be something to do Zach, she settled. Or another of the Hufflepuffs. She had seen, with much dismay, the action unfold in the journals since the start of term. "Oh, everyone's a git sometimes," she reflected, watching Justin's compulsive picking. She wrapped her arms around her knees and hugged them, close. "I can't imagine you were a complete git, though. You don't seem the type to be able to pull that off. No offense or anything."

"Oh, I was. Trust me," Justin replied bitterly, giving the thread a final yank and pulling it off his jeans. Now that it was detached, though, it wasn't nearly as interesting, and he dropped it in favor of plucking at a different thread. "Or just ask Ernie. I'm sure he'd be glad to tell anyone who wants to know that I was a supreme git, since he doesn't want to be my best mate any more." ...Oh god, that hurt to say out loud. Justin's resolve not to cry any more shattered, and he hunched over so far his face was practically in his lap as he tried to hold back the tears that were threatening to come back up.

Jamie was moving in a flash. Rolling onto her knees, she set herself directly in front of Justin's crumbled figure. Pushing herself up so that she was up on her knees, she leaned in close, grabbing the bottom of the window with her left hand to steady herself. She brought her head in close to his. His face was buried deep within his hands, and as her lips ventured close to his ear, her senses were flooded with Justin's sugary smell. She touched his hair with her right hand, softly, and began to whisper, "Bests doesn't just end like that Justin, he's just angry. He'll come back around, you blokes knock friendship around like Bludger and it's all okay in the end, it's just your way." She wanted him to feel her, know she was there, that she cared and that he didn't need to hurt alone. "He'll come back around, mates always do."

Justin shook his head weakly. "Not us. Not me an' Ernie. We've always been bests, ever since first year, an' we've never fought about anything until now. An' I tried to tell him how sorry I was, an' I'm pretty sure I buggered that up, even though Zach said I did good, because all Ernie said was 'alright.' What the fuck kind of response is that? It's not, but that's all he said, and that's... That's it." Well. His plans of keeping himself together were quickly going down the drain, and Justin didn't even care that he was crying with someone who was practically a stranger. He just needed the contact. So he tipped forward the slightest bit, resting his forehead ever so lightly on Jamie's shoulder. That was better.

Jamie gently stroked Justin's hair as his choked words echoed in the hollowness of the Owlry. She responded delicately as her fingers tugged at a small curl: "He's still angry hun. I mean, if I were him, I wouldn't know what else to say, would you? The fact that he said something at all is what you have to look at... he didn't ignore you. He still loves you, he does, he's just too angry to show it right now." Her shoulder grew damp as Justin's tears fell, quickly but silently sinking into the thin fabric of her robes.

God, Justin hoped she was right. His tears quieted after a few minutes, and he sniffled, sitting back. "...Got your shoulder wet," he whispered needlessly after a moment, and brushed his fingers over the damp fabric. "Sorry. ...Didn't mean to go off like that." He paused, giving Jamie a sad smile. "I really hope you're right. ...Maybe I'll write him another note."

As Justin sat up, Jamie leaned back onto the balls of her feet, wincing slightly as she took the weight off her knees. She propped herself up against his leg for balance and returned his smile sweetly, looking up into his magnified eyes. "That'd be a brilliant idea. Mates are mates, no matter what... You'll win him back over, no problem." She patted his knee reassuringly. "It'll just take some time."
A surprisingly comfortable silence settled for a few moments, during which Jamie watched his disjointed story flicker across Justin's eyes as he stared at the floor. What was this boy about? What were these secrets, tumultuous and so dangerously close to the surface? She hadn't the fondest idea, but intended, in time, to find out--if he'd let her.

"Thanks," Justin said quietly. "For listening to me and letting me get this all off my chest." Even if they did barely know each other, she was a really good listener. And Justin had a feeling that he could trust her not to go blabbing off to everyone how she'd found him crying like a child in the Owlry. "...I should go. I told Zach I was going to the Infirmary. He's probably down there already, wondering where I've gone."

"Yeah, yeah... the last thing we need is Zach getting concerned over your whereabouts." She chuckled at the potential. Energized by her own laughter, Jamie popped up off the floor and brushed herself off busily. "Well anyway, I hope things work out soon. They will, don't worry. And if you ever um, need someone or anything" -she locked eyes with him resolutely- "I'm easy enough to find." She reached for his hand and squeezed it gently. He was considerably warm, seeing as how quickly the temperature had dropped as evening had come on.

"Thanks," Justin said again, softer than before. Yes, he'd definitely look her up if he ever needed a talk, especially with someone who wasn't involved in the whole bloody mess. "Bye, Jamie," he murmured, flashing her a quick smile. He gave her hand a gentle squeeze and slowly stepped away, tucking his hands deep in his pockets as he turned and started back for the castle. Now that he was feeling better, he could go to the infirmary, have a chat with Madame, a cuddle with Zach, and maybe even go back to the dorm for bed.
