Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend!  Next Entry
Who: Tonks and Draco
When: Eveningtime. Dinner!
What: Tonks had invited Draco over for dinner. That she wasn't going to make.
Where: Tonks' flat
Status: Incomplete

Tonks was still trying to figure her cousin out sometimes. And, sometimes, figuring out how to fit yourself into someone's life meant that you tripped up. Tonks tripped up earlier, with a joke that went wrong, but she was learning. And hopefully Draco would grade on a curve, so to speak.

A quick sprucing up of her flat meant that things weren't too messy at all, actually. And she was very proud of the fact that it didn't look like a hurricane anymore. So long as no one went into her wardrobe. If they did, she'd have to feign ignorance. Or maybe give a hard hat first.

But anyway! She paced for a few minutes, hoping that Draco meant it when he said that he'd come over. This was for a variety of reasons. The first was that she enjoyed spending time with him, naturally. And the second was that, if Tonks couldn't weasel out the research that Draco wanted to do, then she could at least help him by coming up with a brilliant cover for his leave.

His leave. She snorted then, thinking about it. The Ministry and their rules were decidedly not what she fought for. Decidedly not what she lost friends and family for. It, and Kevin Brocklehurst, irritated the woman just thinking about it. So, rather than rile herself up, she scooped up Edgar and cuddled him while waiting. "Yeah, you'll be getting a friend soon. Promise!"

Draco had been put off by her comment about trustworthy words via his journal, but he could't hold it against her when he had said some pretty stupid things too. The truth was that Tonks had helped him survive his last year at Hogwarts and he hadn't forgotten that. He didn't want to admit it, but he needed her. He might have even loved her.

He arrived at her flat right on time and knocked lightly, waiting for the familiar voice to yell she was on her way. He only hope she didn't tumble over anything in the process.

She looked up and smiled brightly, "Coming!" Called to the door. Plopping the rabbit on the sofa, Tonks headed to let Draco in. And nicked the coffee table with her shin as she moved. That caused muttering and grumbling, but she seemed fine enough when the door flung open. "You'd think that one day I really will bind everything up in rubber or something." Grinning, she opened it further for him to come in.

"I'm glad you came." Said as she gave him a hug. "And what do you want to eat? I was thinking of take away Chinese..but then the idea of curry hit too."

Outside her door, Draco snickered. Did he have her pegged or what? However, his lips turned into a frown as she pulled him into an embrace. It wasn't that he didn't appreciate it, but, rather, that he still wasn't used to it. Nonetheless, he put his arms around her and even managed a kiss to her cheek. "We could do both," he said, stepping inside the place. "I have time."

The fact that he returned her affection meant a lot to Tonks, and had her smiling all the more. Then she laughed, "We could do both. And just have things for tomorrow if it's not all finished. What would you like, then?"

"Do you have menus?" Draco really didn't have carry-out very often so he didn't know what to expect. He was used to elves who just managed to give him whatever he asked. "Or...something you'd recommend?" That might have been better. Then he wouldn't seem so stupid.

"I do have menus.." She paused, looking up at the straightened place. "Somewhere around here." The problem with cleaning was that it sometimes took her a bit to get her bearings again. But then he asked for recommendations and that she could do.

"I'm a fan of moo shu pork..pork with scrambled eggs..and beef with snow peas. Oh, and chow mein noodles!" Moving along to the phone, she picked it up so that they could phone in their order when they were ready. At that point, Tonks really took a look at her cousin and smiled a bit. "How are you doing, love?"

"Pork with scrambled eggs?" Despite his best efforts, Draco's face wrinkled at the thought of such a combination. "Really?" His eyes then landed on the muggle device. What was it Ted had called it? The telephone? "You have one of those," he said rather than answer her question.

She laughed a little at his reaction and gave her cousin an amused look, "I reckon that it tastes a whole lot better than its description. I'm going to order some and you can try mine, if you like."

Then Tonks looked at the phone and back at Draco, grinning. "Yeah, I have one. It's dead handy for contacting Muggles." She paused then, and lifted her eyebrows a little. "Wanna try it?"

It wasn't that Tonks didn't notice the fact that he didn't answer her question. She'd just ask again in a few minutes.

Draco had no intentions of trying such a dish, but he didn't say that. Instead, he looked over the menu and pointed to something called "sweet and sour chicken." How bad could chicken be?

He recoiled from the phone like it might burn him. "Noooo, that's quite alright."

"It's kinda keen!" She wiggled it mock enticingly, just to see if he'd take it. But no, and that was fine. Looking over to where Draco was pointing, she nodded. "Good choice."

So the restaraunt was called, and an order for those two things, plus chow mein was put in. "Bout a half hour, then." That done, she whirled around to look at Draco more properly. "And you forgot my question as to how you were doing, in the excitement of the telephone." Reminded with a smile.

Draco rolled his eyes. His cousin was nothing if not persistent. He gestured to the couch. "May I?"

They were all stubborn in their own ways. Must be in the Black blood. Forgetting herself, Tonks nodded. "Please! Yes, sit you goose."

Draco finally took a seat and glanced around. He had visited before, but only once and not for long so he had missed many of the details. "Nice flat," he told her. "Must be nice having it to yourself." It wasn't that he disliked his childhood home, but being near his father was difficult.

"Thanks. And it's not too bad at all, really. Though I love when people come over. And still go visit my parents all the time." She shrugged and plopped on the other side of the couch. Crossing her legs, she leaned on the edge and eyed Draco again. He was still avoiding the question.

But that was fine, because she had another question. "What's this research, then?"

"Do you really want to know?" Draco raised his eyebrows as he studied his older cousin. He still silently cursed that she had a power to make him trust her. Wasn't he better off not believing anyone? He had nearly destroyed his life in trusting the wrong ones, after all. Nonetheless, Tonks had some power over his emotions. Bloody hell.

"I really want to know." Though she had a tendency to be goofy and such, Tonks was able to be serious when she needed to be. And right now was one of those times. "I want to help, Draco, but gotta know what's going on first."

She cared about Draco, and thus wanted to keep him safe. He was stuck with her now, poor dear.

Draco could use more people like Tonks to be "stuck" with, but he wasn't exactly very good at letting people inside his heart. After the war, he had closed himself off even more, but the Tonks family had weasled their way into his life and he couldn't deny that he cared about them. Rather, he could deny it, but no one could believe it by then.

"I don't want them getting away with all this," Draco said bluntly. "It's wrong and I'm tired of it. They can do what they want to me, but my cousin? My mum and aunt? I'm tired of this. Really tired, Tonks."

"I know what you mean. But you've got to be careful with how you go about doing it, you know? They've got better spin doctors than any Muggle politician I've ever read about, and won't bat an eye at who they bring down." Tonks doubted that even Harry Potter himself, whom she thought (for a while) that the Ministry still might have listened to, would be able to get through now.

She drew up her legs, settling against the back of the arm with her own arms draped absently on her knees. "So what research are you gonna do?"

Draco nodded. He knew oh too well what shite the Ministry could spin. Nevertheless, he wanted to do something good finally. He had used his brain for terrible things so why not use it for something that could actually help? He was starting to believe he just might have been able to make a difference. "I want to see what other wizarding cultures think of ours."

She paused. Really paused and looked at Draco. "You know. That's an ace idea." Fingers pushed through her hair as she contemplated that.

"If you get a handle on what they think of us, and especially if it's negative, the Ministry might lighten up. They'd be the types to back off to save face with other countries.."

Draco grinned at the praise. "So all I need is my charming cousin to get me a permit to travel."

Laughing, she shook her head. "My mum and your mum are gonna shake their heads at us." But she was still going to go through with it, of course.

"Alright. So what do you want to be 'doing' during this wee sabbatical?" The word doing in air qoutes, because they were silly.
