Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend!  Next Entry
Who: Jess Dorny and Scott Summers
What: Jess wastes time lounging in the courtyard during her break before her next class
When: Thursday morning
Where: Hogwarts grounds
Rating: TBD

Thank goodness that the weather was still warm enough to sit outside and enjoy it, without having to wear extra clothing. It was still mid-September, so it was going to be a while until they'd have to wear scarves and hats. And Jess didn't have a class until another hour so she could enjoy lounging back on a bench, having some chocolates all on her own.

Technically, she wasn't alone as there were other students around the courtyard as well, but none of them were conversing with her at the moment. It didn't bother her a bit, honestly. She had her moments when being alone was a little more comforting.

She wasn't alone for too long though, she realized when she heard someone put their bag down next to her.

One thing Scott enjoyed most about being a sixth year was the breaks from not having the same amount of classes as the younger years. He planned on spending some time outside while the weather was nice. Scott had homework to finish and he could possibly get it done out there if he really needed to, but he was going to read the comic book he had in his bag.

He headed out to the courtyard and saw that almost all the benches were full. Except for one, the one Jess was occupying. Scott didn't know Jess hardly at all, just her name.

"Don't mind, do you?" He asked as he sat down beside her.

Jess had started to reach into her bag for her sketchbook she tended to carry around with her. Maybe something would inspire her to draw right there in courtyard. Perhaps the tree across from her that shaded two more benches full of students. When she heard the voice, she threw a glance over at her shoulder and nodded. "No, not at all."

She didn't really know him either, but just through names as they must have been in similar classes several times the past 5 years. Heck, she didn't even know if he knew her at all, but it didn't hurt to let him sit. It wasn't like she was occupying the entire space.

Jess scooted over to one side after pulling her sketchbook and a pencil and opened up to the last page she'd been working on. A half-finished picture of a sparrow was drawn at the top half, but the bottom was still empty and waiting for something to be drawn on it.

"Thanks." Scott pulled the comic book out of his bag. It was the first volume of the revised X-Men series that his dad had just started buying. He was glad he got them before his sister, but that didn't mean she wouldn't bug him for the comic books. This was possibly the first opportunity that Scott had to read it. He intended to read it right now.

Instead, he watched her pull out a sketchbook. "What are you drawing?" Scott asked. He was curious and it wouldn't hurt him to socialize just a tiny bit, even if he really didn't want to.

"Oh, uh.." She looked at the picture of the bird. Half-finished, sure, but that was because she only had so much time to draw it while the thing was hopping from one branch to another on the tree in front of her. Today, it wasn't there. Maybe she ought to stick to drawing a stationary object like the tree itself.

"I don't know yet," she said glancing back up at him with a smile. "Usually I pick anything I see. Or I could draw something from memory. I'm slightly indecisive so there's a lot of erasing before they actually turn into something recognizable." Jess shrugged, tapping the end of her pencil against her book's cover. "I'm Jess, by the way."

"You wouldn't want it to end up looking like something completely different from what it should be, right?" Scott asked. He knew nothing about drawing and could only accomplish stick people. When he was younger, he wished he had such talent because then he could make his own comic books! Scott smiled back. "I'm Scott. What kind of things do you like to draw?"

"Basically," she said with a nod. He, of course, didn't know it but her artistic side came out at first when she tried to draw herself with a superhero-like attire on. "Just about anything! Either from memory or what's in front of me. You ever did any drawings?" Jess herself actually had pages before the one she was on filled with sketches and pastel work.

"That's amazing." Scott was truly amazed. It would be awesome to pull something from the memory and work off of that. He shook his head. "Unless you count all the very bad stick people drawings I did when I was younger, I try to stay away from drawing anything."

Jess raised an eyebrow at him. Well, for one thing, it wasn't amazing. She wasn't even close. She could not rival an actual artist, someone who's become famous for their work. Though she had to give herself the benefit of the doubt because those famous artists were usually made famous after they died. "Drawing's not hard! Just take a few lessons and then you'll be doing stuff.. like I do. Really, this is just a random sketch. Nothing like what you'd fine on the Sistine Chapel or anything."

Scott shook his head. "I think I may be a lost cause. Mum tried to teach me when I was younger, it didn't work. Doubt I could draw anything simple even after a few lessons." He knew he could be no where near as good as famous artists, but even the simple stuff wasn't going to happen for him. His mum was an artist of sorts, she had to be as it was part of her job of restoring paintings.

Jess shrugged. "It took me very long to learn too. I was always a persistent child. Mum and Dad aren't really one to tell me that I shouldn't be wasting time with it just because it's not involving math or science. I started pretty young, in primary school. But you know, that's how the system works! Most of the time, all they do is tell you to draw stuff." She picked up her pencil to start on the tree in front of her and then stopped, remembering something. "In my first year, I used to draw myself as some sort of fictional superhero."

Scott nodded his head. His parents, though still shocked that all three of their children were wizards, always wanted him to find something he liked and pursue it. "Really? A superhero?" His eyes widened. "Superheroes are amazing! I always wanted to be one." Scott was glad that the comic book he had with him had Cyclops on the cover. "I always wanted to be him!" He said, pointing him out to Jess.
