Who: Lisa Turpin
When: October 16
What: Lisa a gets a letter at morning post
Where: Great Hall & then corridors
Warnings: Anxiety, self-judgment
The flutter of wings as post arrived made Lisa lookup. Sometimes her parents wrote to her, often it was her mother and accompanied a new cream or lotion she was to use in her beauty regime. A girl could get a complex when your mother was constantly fretting over your appearance.
The familiar family owl appeared dropping a letter at her place. Lisa saw the script of her name and instantly knew it was her mother. With the letter was a small package. She opened it up and saw it was a new night serum to be used. Wonderful. Lisa opted to not read the letter right away since it was probably to tell her all about the new serum. It wasn’t important. Lisa turned her attention to the person next to her at the table to chat before getting nipped by her owl. “Yes, fine I am done with it.” She looked at her plate wishing the thing would grab what it want and flutter off.---
Lisa collected her things shoving the serum into her bag. She picked up the letter finally opening the envelope. She waved her classmate ahead as she figured she ought to read the letter on her way to Ancient Runes.
She unfolded the parchment and started to read the words her mother had written. Expecting some explanation about the new product she was to try. What she found was not that.Dear Lisa,
Your father and I are so proud when we heard the news. You were selected for the Inquisitorial Squad, which is such an honour. It is so great that you are following the lead of her brothers. If they were at school we know they would have been some of the first to sign up, so it pleases us that you took such initiative to get involved.
We know you will do our family proud at Hogwarts. You know full well that your actions will reflect on the family name and all the efforts we have made these passed few years. You know just how important our new status is and we have complete faith that you understand how important your success at Hogwarts this year is. It is with the utmost importance that you take this new honour seriously, which we have no doubt you will do. You are always such a good girl and wonderful student.
It was always such a disappointment when you were not named prefect. Now is the time to showcase your skills and how much you deserve the badge. We are ever so proud of you.
Remember your actions reflect back on the family and you know how important your brothers’ success is and your success at Hogwarts will only boost their standings.
We are so proud of you Lisa. I have included the new product I made as a present for you to show just how proud we are.
Love,
Mother (and of course father but you know he never signs these things)
Lisa stopped walking as she started to read between the lines and understand the tone her mother was writing in which was thinly veiled behind the writing of a proud mother. Her fingers began to crumple the parchment as she pursed her lips. So her parents had heard the good news.
Lisa felt her throat tighten and her heart start to race. Did they know she had not taken the appointment seriously? Or did they just know her well enough to assume? Either way, she had already screwed up. She had to recover and make up for the misstep if that was indeed what it was. Maybe Daphne had been right.
She felt her mind spiralling into dark thoughts of her errors and running through her recent actions and conversations. She felt nauseous. Her breathing quickened and she reached for the wall to steady herself, crumbling the parchment further as her other hand loosened her tie. Air she needed air. She felt confined.
Do better, she internally berated herself. How could she be so stupid? Of course, it was her parents at the root of her invitation. Lisa should have known better it was the new standing of her parents that allowed her to be selected. She needed to do better, no she would do better.
Lisa wiped a hand across her dewy brow. She shoved her letter into her book bag before she straightened her tie back and smoothed her hands over her robes a gesture that felt calming. Lisa quickly looked around hoping nobody noticed that moment of weakness and panic. Once she was sure she looked down fixing her Inquisitorial Squad badge to ensure it was straight and then walked towards class as if everything was normal and that she wasn’t repeating the words do better, be better, don’t screw it up for the family in her head.
