power
who: spider, ivanya & OPEN
setting: out
The storm had been intense. She’d woken up a couple times throughout the night from a few hard cracks of thunder but sleep always called her back. She had a lot of energy to build back up after finding him.
When Ivanya woke, she was still snuggled with Spider on the bed, safely tucked in between the wall and his body. She’d abandoned her own clothes on the floor basically a lifetime ago and had since commandeered one of his long-sleeve, light hoodies to sleep in. She’d expected to be woken up by an blaring alarm, something she’d gotten used to back in prison, but there was only silence instead. Blinking awake, Ivanya peeked her head and noticed that the room was definitely darker than she’d expected. Not even a blinking light on the computer at the desk.
She was careful as she sat up, trying hard not to wake Spider up as she leaned against the wall and squinted as if it would help her see something that just wasn’t there. No tiny notification lights, not even hallway lights shining in from under the door. Ivanya shifted, awkwardly trying to climb over Spider to get out of the bed but ultimately nudging his side with her leg.
Spider on the other hand, had been awake for almost all of it. Just listening to the torrential rain, watching the flashes outside, so bright they lit up the sky like day. He felt her stir, and gave her a second before he turned his head to look at her. He smiled softly. “Hey,” he greeted, voice a little hoarse from disuse, but he reached up to brush the backs of his fingers against her cheek. “Power’s out. The storm last night was nasty. It’s been out for a while, not sure it’s coming back any time soon,” he filled in for her.
“Damn, you look good in the morning.” Ivanya melted, taking the opportunity to lay on top of him and make it easier for him to touch her. “I remember the storm, just bits of it though.” She should have guessed that Spider would already have assessed the situation, but the actual problem was concerning to her. Power was essential for both of them. She’d not had any access to her equipment in prison, but she’d still had power. And now that she had him here with her, she didn’t want to settle for less than what she felt they deserved. And he deserved power.
“...Then we should go look for the breakers.”
"Yeah, you were out pretty good," he said, amused. "Did I wear you out?" He asked, pleased with the idea. He pulled her closer and kissed her neck. "Let's get moving," he agreed, wanting power back too. He didn't know anyone else here yet, so he didn't know what to expect from other prisoners. He sighed and got up, reluctant to get out of bed, but he knew he needed to.
“Yes,” She answered, grinning at his question. “But apparently I need to up my game if I’m going to wear you out…” The soft touch of his lips on her neck made Ivanya sigh. She closed her eyes to memorize the feeling, not willing to take his proximity to her for granted.
She shifted off of him, standing by the bed and stretching tall for a moment. Her jeans had been discarded somewhere near his door and when she went to snag them, she noticed something then tested the door handle. “Think the locks are run on central power,” Iv said, sort of hopping into her jeans. She left her white tee on the ground, preferring his long-sleeved black hoodie. “At the very least, we’re open.” And she had a feeling that as soon as the power came back on, Spider would see to it that a lock never got in their way again.
He got up and tossed on an old Nirvana tshirt and plain dark blue work pants, work boots and he pulled his hair back into a low ponytail to keep it out of his face. It felt muggy out there, the humidity was high. “Yeah, I’m going to need to figure that part out,” he said, mind already skimming along the same line as hers. He leaned over to nuzzle just beneath her jaw, and he placed a kiss there before stepping out to see the devastation. His eye caught the note, and he read it then handed it to Iv.
Iv softened, leaning into his kiss for a moment longer than necessary. She was positive she would never take these moments for granted, even when they were faced with critical missions like getting the power back on. They'd spent so much time apart; they had a lot of closeness to catch up on.
Opening the note, Iv let out a little thinking sound. "Looks like we're on our own here. Or… well, all of us in the experiment are. Good thing we're both self sufficient," she said, tossing him a bright smile over her shoulder. "Breakers first?"
Spider nodded. “Absolutely,” he said, stretching again, and then he looked around, eyes skirting the sides of the buildings, trying to see if there were any visible lines on the outsides of the walls, or where it looked to him like a maintenance room would be most likely to be. He saw a few other people starting to mill about, and he called out. “I’m headed to figure out the power,” he said. “If anyone else knows what they’re doing there, feel free to join me.”
