Re: Axel: Rae & Fen
She had an idea that was laughter instead of derision. Rae would have been forgiven for assumption that it was derision, comprised as it was of harsh sound that didn't strictly speaking, sound much like laughter. Vale hadn't supplied her with endless pleasure. It had supplied her with a very clear indication of where it was they expected her to go, and who she was expected to be. But Rae hadn't been innocent for very long. Perhaps endless pleasure at Vale was at the beginning, before cynicism and fate settled in to take the wheel.
Her appetites were hardly delicate. But she kept them hidden when it was circumspect to do so.
"Oh, the world," Rae dismissed the world neatly with the wave of her hand. She'd forgotten the popcorn and it had cooled, congealing butter. She moved to set it aside, and then as if by afterthought, offered it over to him, the carton bright and cardboard. "The world is consumption. But as a philosophy, it leaves something to be desired for the people who'd like to consume as well." Her gaze wasn't idle. She was assessing, she just looked as if she wasn't. Rae's mouth was made for smiling; it did so readily.
"Don't make it too narrow. You need to know what might approach from the side. And if you're intending to plough on, at least make the waiting pleasant." Inevitability was inevitability. But there was no one protesting that one had to wait for it to come. "Are you enjoying the town, darling? Beyond the family reunion, I mean." The carton dangled, Rae's inquiry was clear.
