Re: [Hookerville: Hannah & Reece]
Hannah watched him. Cornflower blink, blink, and like she thought she could figure him out if she just looked hard enough. But she couldn't figure anything out at all, and she wondered if real people had an easier time of that than she did. "Eddie said that too, about copying me," she told him as metal fingers curled inward toward his palm. "I know you're probably just saying that, about it being okay. I know you're just saying it because I said it, but it really is true." She wasn't really good at reading him, but she'd learned a few things along the way, and she knew Reece liked the path of least resistance a lot.
"Marcus told me what I was," she said without hesitation. "He wasn't a really nice man, and he liked being cruel, and so he told me one day when he was angry at something that wasn't me." She smiled a little when he made the correction from who to what. "I don't know, Reece. I'm a what, not a who. I belong to Tethys. I'm on loan to the military. I don't get to make choices. I don't even know if the choices I do make are really mine. Maybe everything is programmed. 'Whos' aren't owned, are they? I don't know, and I don't know anyone like me, and I don't feel like other people. Other people are who." She wasn't sure if that helped or made things better, and she only knew she didn't want to make things worse by verbalizing the ideas she'd been wrestling with internally.
She leaned forward, and she kissed his cheek, because that was all she could think of to do in that moment. "Oh!" she said, drawing back, and all this talk reminded her. "Can you check with Ren about the invitation?"
