"You're welcome," and her smile was wide and bright, and her attention was warm and settled on him. He was the only thing in the world and the only thing in the space, and her fingers slid from skin down over metal. "Why didn't you ever have them cover it with fake skin?" she asked. He could hide better that way, or be normal, or be not-different, and she knew the question was one loaded with things, especially coming from her. She did wonder, though, and his eye, too, and he was human, and why wouldn't he want to look it?
She leaned back when he talked about dreams, and she let her fingers slip, side, and her hand fell onto her lap. "Just close your eyes and say it. You came here to say it," she reminded him. If he really, really didn't want to say whatever it was, then he wouldn't have brought it up. "Close your eyes, and just say anything that comes."
