I think the only answer is to not answer him the next time he tries. [...] I can't get into too much detail without telling tales out of school about people who aren't him, but we've also gone head to head on the well-being of someone else we both care about recently. It made it hard to avoid talking to him. After that, he must have thought it would be good to try to get in the same space again, but it kind of backfired. [...] Anyway, we just have too much baggage, I guess. I was hoping we could still be friends, but it doesn't seem that way. That being the case, I just need to not respond to him again.
