Re: log: welcome home - adrian and dietre
The second floor was as charmingly old fashioned as the first. Three bedrooms branched off the main hallway, with a closed door at one end. "That's the linen closet," he said. One of the bedrooms was clearly being used as an office - the door, partially ajar, showed a room with hardwood flooring and a desk with a monitor under a broad window. The door on the left, however, opened into a guest room. The closed door on the opposite wall must lead to an en suite bedroom. There was a fresh set of pale blue linen sheets on the bed, which was tucked in as tight as could be.
"There's a maid service that comes every Friday," he said, with a rueful grin. "I don't make beds that well."
In one corner was a small television on a stand, and the back wall was dominated by a dark wood wardrobe - "Came with the house," he said, gesturing to it. The room wasn't large, but it had a broad window, so typical of old homes, dressed with light curtains. "I had a lot of help," he added. "Carol's the maid, she's kind of a lifesaver. If you don't want her coming in, just put a sticky note on the door or something, otherwise she'll clean every nook and cranny." A desk in the corner completed the room.
"I'm technically an orphan," he said, with a shrug. It wasn't dismissive of Dietre's sad reality, just a gesture of commiseration. "Getting disowned, that's nothing to be ashamed of. Good riddance, right?"
He leaned in the doorway, sliding sideways to give Dietre enough space to move into the room. "I don't let go of them, I guess," he said. "I just let them run their course in my head, and then I move on to doing something else. Until the next time." A small smile.
He laughed, loudly, when Dietre said he couldn't imagine him being an asshole. "That's definitely a sign you've never met me before," he said, pushing off from the doorframe. "Alright, anyway, I'll let you get settled into your room. You need anything at all, let me know. There's no weird off-limits rooms, I really don't care where you go. I don't have anyone in the attic or anything." He spread a hand. "Sorry the house isn't weird and full of secrets. I hate disappointing people."
