Even though Patrick wasn't pushing, the situation still felt to Marta like it needed an explanation. Though it was difficult and strange to try to justify something that she hated. "I would..." Quiet, a little desperate. "If I could, I'd move out of the motel. To wherever." She didn't have the money for it, but if moving out didn't mean likely getting sent to prison, she would've figured out a way to make it work. She didn't know (or didn't remember, which was basically the same) that Patrick had vouched for her at all, and didn't expect any more.
"Fine. It was a how-to book. Apparently neither one of us were very good at the how, because it kind of fell apart." She said it with another faint smile, the run of words and expression making her seem almost like a different person for a moment. But then she grew serious again, her expression bordering on grim. "You died?" A repeat, and it was obvious that she expected an answer this time.
