Instinctively, I wouldn't want to know for certain.
But if someone came up to my door and promised me they'd worked as hard as they could to exhaust all possibilities and they didn't know for certain I would still have faith. If they did that and then said 'we dredged the lake and found a body', then I'd believe it. But I'd want to believe that they believed my son or daughter was alive as much as I did to that point.
We can know something is factually correct. But we can hope or believe that it doesn't apply to us, or we can forget about that fact in the moment.
