I think what the sheriff was getting at is, that mother out there doesn't want to think through all the possible consequences and outcomes. She's trying to imagine her boy coming home. She's trying to believe, even if she's worried out of her mind and thinking about the possible ways that boy could be found hurt instead of alive, that hurts. And while the sheriff might be thinking through every logical outcome, that's his job. The mom's job is to believe her boy is coming back.
I don't think you were wrong and you weren't trying to be cruel. Just maybe need to work on tone a little, and what you say to who.
