Narrative: NATOLI, NELSON & BARRIS LLC
Who: Nishka (and Loki, briefly)
What: Nish goes for a very short job ‘interview’ *wink wink*
Where: Natoli, Nelson & Calagoure LLC
When: Backdated to Monday, February 26, 2018
The drive to the Capital hadn’t been too long, and she stopped to grab an overpriced coffee before finding the right building. There had been an internal advertisement with the local law society that the firm was losing one of their partners to retirement. Another lawyer would be needed to fill the void, and Nish was immediately interested. The firm seemed to practice the same kind of law she did, it was relatively nearby, and it would pay well.
As soon as she walked into the lobby, she knew she’d chosen the right place. Judging by the decor in the office as she walked in, they were doing very well for themselves.
The receptionist greeted her with a smile and took her name, nodding and ushering her to the waiting area. Not long after, she was led into a boardroom, all warm wood and comfortable chairs, where she settled herself with the ease of one who already owned the place.
’You got this,’ Loki said, further boosting her confidence. She smiled, enjoying his encouragement, and by the time the other two lawyers entered the room she was sitting as if she was the one giving the interview.
“Ms. Bariss, thank you for coming,” one said, each shaking her hand and introducing themselves in turn before sitting down. “Impressive resume,” he said, the paper on the table in front of him.
“Thank you,” she replied cordially. “It has everything you’re looking for in a partner,” she added, pushing both of them just enough that they both nodded in agreement. She and Loki had discussed this at length beforehand, and agreed - they needed this job, so some pushing was in order, however too much would not be conducive to a good work environment. Even now, she could feel Loki listening with interest, the backseat driver that he was.
“Indeed it does,” said Mr. Natoli. “We’ve been needing someone with your particular skill set, and you have licence to practice in several states, which could be useful. Some young blood might be what our firm needs to stay relevant,” he added with a smile. The other two partners, while not retirement age, were a bit grey around the edges. She smiled back brightly between them.
“Well, I can definitely liven things up in here, if that’s what you want,” she said with a soft laugh, which they echoed. “I’ve worked for a firm before, and last year I was on my own working out of a small office of just me and an assistant, but I found I missed the firm environment,” she half-lied. She had enjoyed being her own boss, setting her own hours, doing her own thing, but a part of her had missed having other lawyers to consult with or discuss cases with. And not having to do everything herself would be a plus.
“So, Bill Calagoure has just retired,” he went on, pushing her resume to the side as if that part of the interview was over. “He didn’t want to leave us without a replacement, so he is still here, at least until you start. Would tomorrow be too soon?” he asked hopefully, and that was when she knew she’d successfully hooked them. Pushed just enough so that they believed it had been their own decision and not hers.
“Of course not,” she said, sounding eager and surprised enough that they both seemed satisfied. They seemed to silently consult with each other, and she caught slight nods between them. She was in.
“Great; You’ll be inheriting his files, so he can give you an overview of what he’s working on and what needs immediate attention.”
“Sure. I’ll be happy to dive right in,” she said, standing when they did. She glanced at the clock on the wall - less than five minutes. A record for her. They extended hands, and she shook each in turn.
“Welcome to the firm, Ms. Bariss.”
A week later, a new sign was put up in the lobby:
