[At Home: Iris and Manning (& the girls)]
Who: Iris & Manning (& TJ and baby AJ)
What: Family at home
Where: The Thorsen Abode
When: After the return of humanity
Warnings/Rating: Likely some of the following: talk of temporary death, schmoop, sweetness, baby breastfeeding
It was like she'd gone for a week without taking a breath, and she could finally again feel the oxygen flowing into her lungs. Since Manning had told her about his (very long) past, there hadn't been the worry about him dying. Mortality was something that lay solely in her court. But at one of Reposes whims, he'd been taken from her. It had been instant and brutal, and she'd crumbled.
It had been awful, and she hadn't handled it well at all, and it scared her how not-well she'd actually been. William and his wife had needed to come into town to take care of the kids, with Iris nearly shutting down completely except when she needed to feed AJ. And even then, it had been like there was a curtain between her and the world. She tried to be there for TJ - to comfort and reassure her, but she knew that the little girl hadn't believed the reassurances that everything would be okay. Her papa was gone and Iris was upset and everything was wrong and...
And then Manning was back. And Iris could breathe again. Their world slotted back together with tears and disbelief and relief so strong that it was pain. And both herself and TJ - neither of them wanted to let him out of their sight. It had become common for at least one of them to be with him at all times (Iris going so far as to sit on the closed lid of the toilet when he showered before the girls woke up - or after they were asleep).
Which was why Iris was surprised when TJ peered around the edge of the doorframe of the bedroom as she was sitting in bed, relaxing while feeding the baby. Feeding time hadn't been any sort of shameful thing, though it had admittedly taken Iris a little while to get used to it. In general and while there were other people in the room. But it had (fairly quickly) become just another normal thing in their house. It was how the baby had to eat. But to have TJ peeking in without Manning in her immediate vicinity was a surpriase after the past days.
"Hey, sweetie," she whispered, careful to keep the quiet atmosphere of the room. "Did you want to come sit with us?" She held out her free hand toward the door, and the girl nodded while she slipped into the room and clambered up onto the bed. There was a bit of jostling, but soon enough TJ was settling against Iris' side, slipping small fingers into longer ones.
